NEWS: After Two Month Closure, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Reopens in Disneyland

It’s a BIG day in Disneyland, friends, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about this change!

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

For months now, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been closed for refurbishment with no reopening date in sight. However, that’s all changed — the ride is BACK OPEN as of today!

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Disneyland closed for refurbishment on September 2nd, 2025, but no reopening timeline or date was listed. Today, we happened to check the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad page on the Disneyland website, and lo and behold, there were times listed!

If you’re heading to the park soon, it’s important to know that this ride will likely be seeing some pretty high wait times as everyone rushes to ride it again and see what the refurbishment may have changed within the ride. If you’re heading into Disneyland soon, you’ll also want to know about these other closures taking place over the rest of 2025:

Holidays at “it’s a small world”

Over in Disney World, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad remains closed and won’t be reopening until early 2026 at the earliest, but we do know what changes are coming to this version of the ride. We know that:

    • The ride will be getting a facelift to better match the new Piston Peak land
    • New lightning and effects are coming to the interior of the ride
    • A new, smoother track (can you believe that???)
    • The addition of Rainbow Caverns inside the ride, which are going to be “spectacular natural caverns full of phosphorescent pools, shimmering and illuminating iridescent stalagmites (the ones on the floor) and stalactites (the ones on the ceiling)”
    • The story is changing as well! Disney has said that, “The story of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad dates back to Olden Times, or rather, Golden Times, during the early days of America’s first major gold rush. When Barnabas T. Bullion struck gold in the Big Thunder region, he saw a future full of riches and hustled to start the Big Thunder Mountain Company.” However, after a battle with the forces of nature, strange and unexplainable things began to happen, and “the unsuspectin’ passengers who board the runaway trains will learn just how wild the wilderness can get.”
