Will Hurricane Erin Impact Your Disney World Vacation This Week?

Hurricane season is in full swing, and the first massive storm of the season is making waves (8-foot waves, to be exact) out in the ocean.

Don’t let the rain ruin your day!

Hurricane Erin exploded from a Category 1 to a Category 5 in under 24 hours a few days ago, and while the path of this hurricane fortunately doesn’t have it hitting land, here’s how it can affect the East Coast of the United States this week.

According to CNN, the East Coast of the United States could start seeing ramifications from the storm through the morning of August 22nd, which includes dangerous rip currents and waves up to potentially 15 feet high in some areas further north. For Florida specifically, eight-foot waves are expected in some areas, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

As of the morning of August 19th, the hurricane has dropped down to a Category 2 storm, but the National Hurricane Center is now keeping track of two tropical waves that could follow the storm. As of 8 AM this morning, “the center of Erin was located about 720 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and 665 miles southwest of Bermuda, moving northwest at 7 mph with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph.”

Fortunately, the storm’s closest approach to Florida will be east of Cape Canaveral early Wednesday, so heavy winds won’t be a factor. However, the storm could still cause 5-8 foot waves in certain places along the coast.

As of now, it’s not known whether the storm is expected to begin to strengthen again due to “more favorable environmental shear and upper-level divergence in 24-36 hours should support some re-intensification,” or if it’ll continue to weaken due to its slow motion and larger size upwelling cooler water. Disney World is not expected to be impacted.
