Disney is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the iconic Space Mountain with a BRAND-NEW YouTube video that captures the sounds and ambiance of the galactic adventure for those yearning to experience it from home!

Uploaded to the official DisneyParks channel, the video celebrates the attraction’s 50th birthday (the original Magic Kingdom version of the iconic coaster opened to the public on January 13th, 1975) and invites listeners to “kick off their space boots and lean back” as Disney shuttles them through the “sights and sounds of Space Mountain and Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain across Disney parks.”

The clip, which comes in at a substantial 54:58 runtime, features audio from four of the world’s Space Mountain attractions, broken down as such:

  • Space Mountain at Walt DisneyWorld’s Magic Kingdom: 0:00-4:15
  • Space Mountain at Disneyland: 4:16-8:59
  • Star Wars: Hyperspace Mountain at Disneyland Paris: 9:00-11:25
  • Star Wars: Hyperspace Mountain Hong Kong Disneyland: 11:26-13:38

Following the end of these audio clips, the video plays through various music loops from these four versions of the attraction. Conspicuously absent is anything from Tokyo Disneyland’s Space Mountain, which is currently in the midst of a massive transformation. The original ride closed in the summer of 2024 and is being rebuilt into an “entirely new attraction” that will “maintain its original concept as an indoor roller coaster, but will have enhanced performance and immersive special effects that will give guests even more thrills on this exciting rocket ride”  according to the Oriental Land Company.

Space Mountain began life as blue sky plans for a “spaceport” roller coaster for Disneyland in the early 1960s. However, the limited nature of technology at the time led to the project being filed away. Over a decade later, it was revived to add a much-needed thrill ride to the Magic Kingdom. Opening in 1975, the ride quickly became one of Disney’s definitive theme park experiences.

An altered Disneyland version – – with the same theme and visual aesthetic but featuring a single track and different ride layout – – opened in 1977. An essential clone of the Disneyland version opened at Tokyo Disneyland as an opening day attraction in 1983 and basically remained such until its 2024 closure, while yet another clone of the Disneyland version opened at Hong Kong Disneyland in 2005, and currently operates as Star Wars: Hyperspace Mountain.

An initially vastly different version of the attraction opened at Disneyland Paris in 1995. This version, initially known as De la Terre à la Lune, was themed around author Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon. The coaster features an inversion – – a first for any Space Mountain – – and riders are launched out of a giant cannon mimicking Verne’s story. Overall, the attraction’s aesthetic matched the “steampunk” of the rest of the park’s riff on Tomorrowland, Discoveryland. The ride was rethemed to Space Mountain: Mission 2 in 2005, before being permanently rethemed to Star Wars: Hyperspace Mountain in 2017.
