It might be the end of an era for Bluey.

Bluey has taken the world by storm since the Australian series first premiered back in 2018. Over the nearly seven years since the series — which revolves around a family of Blue Heeler dogs, especially the precocious titular pup Bluey and her sister Bingo — the series has become a massive hit and merchandising juggernaut. In late 2024, it was announced that a Bluey feature film would be released in 2027. While this announcement seemed to be the apex of Bluey’s world takeover, a letter from the series’ creator has cast a bit of a pall on the franchise’s future.
Since its inception, Joe Brumm has been the primary creative voice of the series. Brumm, who based the series loosely on his experiences raising his own young daughters, has written the majority of the show’s episodes over its three seasons and directed all episodes of the first. He also wrote and will direct the upcoming film. So far, so good.

In December of 2024, Brumm penned a letter posted to the official Bluey website. It begins with the the rather ominous “I’m writing this to share some Bluey news – some good, some trifficult.”
Brumm behind with the good news, saying that after time working on other projects, an old idea had resurfaced and “… before I knew it, I’d written a Bluey feature script that I really love” which became the upcoming Bluey movie.

However, Brumm then moves on to the “trifficult” part, writing “I always said I wouldn’t keep making the show if I thought I couldn’t make any new season as good as the last. This would have been the case for me with a potential season four, so I’ve decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series. In the event I can’t wrap my head around doing more seasons myself, “The Sign” (a Bluey special released this past April) will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I wrote it as such.”

Brumm goes on to say that while the series changed his life, he needs to walk away with the series at its biggest height because he was finding it “difficult to reach back genuinely into that four to six-year-old world and write authentically.”

From there, Brumm thanks all of the crew who’ve worked with him on the series, then clarifies that the end of his current involvement in the series does NOT mean the end of Bluey, and says the letter is simply an acknowledgment that his “focus will be on the film.” In other words, there seem to still be plans for a fourth season of Bluey to go ahead without the direct involvement of Brumm.

While the mega-hit Bluey franchise doesn’t seem like it’s going away anytime soon, especially with a feature film coming in 2027, the core series will be moving on without the direct involvement of creative Joe Brumm. Stay tuned to AllEars for more on Bluey’s evolution.
