We’ve got a construction update!

Construction continues on one of Disney World’s largest — and most controversial — upcoming projects: the new Disney Vacation Club Tower at the Polynesian Village Resort. The new expansion, officially dubbed the Island Tower at Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows, is scheduled to open on December 17th, 2024.

While there’s clearly still a lot of work to do, the Island Tower is definitely coming together nicely and looks to the naked eye like it will be ready for December, which is a good thing…

Right?

Well, it depends on who you ask. For example, many of our readers reached out with negative reactions to the new tower’s design, feeling it looked like a generic hotel as opposed to the intricate theming Disney and the Polynesian, in particular, are known for. As reader Wendy put it at the time, “I think it’s an eyesore that takes away the ambiance and the back story of the Poly. Like the new FW cabins, it appears to be just another run of the mill hotel with a little dressing. The old saying is, you can’t put lipstick on a pig comes to mind. Sorry, but it’s a disappointment to me.”

Of course, there were some who liked the expansion in concept like reader Chris, “I’m all for it. We usually get a 2-bedroom suite through DVC at other resorts. You can’t do that at the Poly now. Hopefully, we’ll be doing that in the future.”

For their part, Disney has defended the design as being inspired by the original concept art for the resort from Disney World’s earliest development in the 1960s.

While some may love it and some may hate it, the new Island Tower is coming to the Polynesian Resort later this year, and construction indicates it’s right on schedule. Stay tuned to AllEars for further updates on the new expansion.
