A HUGE change just happened in Disney World today.

Genie+ has officially gone away and Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass are here! However, these changes are way more than a simple name change. We previously got details on pricing for the service, and we’re testing it out to see how it works. However, we’re getting a lot of questions about how it affects park hopping, so we’re going to test that out!
To catch you up on what’s changed beyond the name of the new service, Lightning Lane Multi Pass allows you to purchase it and select Lightning Lane attractions seven days before you visit the parks if you’re staying in Disney World hotels and three days if you’re not. Rides are assigned tiers and you can make one selection from the top tier and two selections from the bottom tier (or three from the bottom tier) You are also allowed to have three selections at a time, so it’s a BIG change from Genie+. However, how does it work with park hopping?

This is how Disney explained park hopping with Multi Pass. You select it for one theme park when you purchase it, so unlike Genie+, there is no MultiPark option. However, you can still use it in multiple parks if you have a valid park hopper ticket. Once you redeem one of your selections of the day in the park you’ve scanned into (your first park), you can choose another Multi Pass Lightning Lane in another park.

We noticed that this was exactly the case once we had scanned into our first pre-selected Lightning Lane ride. Not only can you book another Lightning Lane in another park, but you can also modify into another park. This was not an option with Genie+ and it gives you a lot of flexibility when modifying your selections.

Another question you might have, though, is how this works when Multi Pass costs less for your first park and more for the park you plan to hop over to. Well, we tested it out. We paid $18 for the Lightning Lane Multi Pass in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which is the cheapest park for the day, and then we scanned into our first ride. We then got a message that we could select another experience.

So we decided to see if we could switch over to Magic Kingdom (Multi Pass is $29 there) and book a Lightning Lane experience.

And we did! We booked a Lightning Lane for “it’s a small world” in Magic Kingdom. We were not given any messages that it would cost us more, so we booked a Magic Kingdom experience for the Animal Kingdom price.

So, yes, if you have park hopping added to your ticket, you can pay for the least expensive Multi Pass, ride your first ride in that park, and then book a Lightning Lane in more expensive parks after that without having to pay an additional fee. We don’t necessarily recommend this because most of the popular rides will be booked up already and it’s more of a hassle…but technically, it is possible.
Note that you CANNOT choose Lightning Lane selections in multiple parks when you make your selections in advance, though. This is only something you can do once you’re in a park and have used your first selection.

Lightning Lane Single Pass, which replaces the Individual Lightning Lane option of Genie+, will still allow you to buy two selections per day and you can still buy them in two different parks if you have the park hopping option on your ticket.
This could be a game changer for how many people park hop in Disney World. We’ll continue to test out Lightning Lane Multi Pass, so check back with AllEars again soon for more.
