It’s always interesting to us to see how differently Disney World and Universal Orlando do things.

Universal is working on building a whole new park while Disney World is continuing to update attractions in their existing parks. And now there’s another big step Universal has decided to take, and we’re interested to see how guests will react to it.
As of around a week ago, Universal Orlando parks (Universal and Islands of Adventure) no longer have paper maps.

Instead, you’ll need to use your phone to scan a QR code that will pull up the map for you in the Universal app on your phone. That map will also then show you up-to-date wait times around the parks.

The problem? Not everyone likes using their phone constantly in theme parks. Yes, it’s great to see wait times, take photos, and use Universal’s Express Pass (if you’ve chosen to pay for it), but a lot of people would rather just wander around without needing to use their phone every four seconds.

And if someone isn’t familiar with the parks, then they WILL likely need to stare at their phone all the time to know where to go. We know some people may be less than thrilled with this change.

We’ll be sure to let you know if we notice this change elsewhere, so stay tuned to AllEars!

I like having the maps as it’s a great free souvenir and I would tick off all the things we did on our trip. Plus it was entertainment for my daughter who would go about with a map telling us which way to go. I just hope Disney doesn’t follow…
I hate it! Nowadays, the parks make you look at your phone for EVERYTHING, and it drains the battery. There are people in this world who NEED or want paper maps & times guides. Not everyone is phone savvy!
