As we continue to learn more about the Ron DeSantis v. Disney lawsuit, the political conflict continues.

Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis and Disney have been in a feud for quite some time now with still no resolution. Since the dissolving of the Reedy Creek Improvement Disney into the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District and the entirely governor-appointed board, things have been a bit uneasy within the area. We recently heard that another local theme park company approved its own special self-governing district, and now Disney has responded.
Universal Studios was granted an all-new special tax district to assist with funding Sunshine Corridor and SunRail station, which will be near their new park, Epic Universe. Since this news, many of us have been wondering what Disney was going to have to say about it — and now we know.

Disney has commented on the matter in a new court filing obtained via Deadline.
“In repeated public comments, the Governor declared that the laws do not injure Disney because they simply make the company subject to the same regulatory structure applicable to all other Florida businesses, thereby creating a “level playing field.” That contention is an outright falsehood. In fact, a special district was established just this month to regulate the land encompassing Universal’s new Epic Universe theme park in Orange County—with its inaugural board of supervisors comprising only Universal employees.”

Not only did they point out the fact that Universal Studios received its own special taxing district, but the fact that ALL of the board members are Universal employees. Both of these privileges were taken away from Disney.

Disney continued by adding, “Further, most businesses and other property owners in Florida are regulated by elected, politically accountable municipal bodies. Few Florida businesses are subject, as Disney now is, to governance by a special district with a Governor-controlled board that closely regulates the use of private property with no accountability to local property owners and taxpayers.”

Well, we wondered if this piece of news was going to be used in Disney’s case against the governor, and sure enough, it is now part of the fight. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
