BIG Update Announced About Disney's Affordable Housing Project

About one year ago, Disney announced a new affordable housing project for the Orlando area.

Coincidentally, the announcement came shortly after Universal announced a plan of its own for a new affordable housing community. During a recent meeting of the new Reedy Creek Improvement Board leaders, they also discussed a need for affordable housing in the Disney World area. And not long after, Disney released some updates about its project — here’s what we know.

As we previously reported, Walt Disney World Resort plans to contribute about 80 acres of land toward its new affordable housing development. The development will be located in southwest Orange County, Florida. According to Disney, “This type of land contribution is unique and is one of many ways we are making a lasting impact in Central Florida.”

More recently, Disney shared an update on the progress of this big undertaking, stating, “We’re thrilled to share that groundbreaking on this development is targeted for next year, with the first units anticipated to be completed in 2026.”

Disney had previously set a goal to build about 1,300 units, though since then, the project has expanded to approximately 1,400 total units. These units will be offered to Florida families in need of attainable housing. According to Disney, the new development will be limited to applicants within a certain income range.

Although the project is still in the early stages, we know that the housing will be located a few miles away from the Magic Kingdom, near schools and the Flamingo Crossings Town Center.

Again, it is interesting to see this update shared so close to the time when the new Reedy Creek board members discussed the need for more affordable housing within the District and potential plans to look at pursuing that in the future.
