It has all led to this… every battle, every plot… every episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars has led to this final battle.

Well, not the final battle (that’s in Revenge of the Sith and we all know how that went), but the final chapter in the tale of the Clone Wars. This series has done more to flesh out the prequel trilogy than anyone could have imagined, and the final season is bound to answer some big questions about the Star Wars universe… including the origin of The Mandalorian.
The new season focuses on the Siege of Mandalore, a critical plot element in the backstory of The Mandalorian. Mandalore has been a central plot point in both The Clone Wars and its sequel series Rebels. There’s the conflict between the militant Death Watch and the more peaceful New Mandalorians, the struggles of Mandalorian artist and rebel Sabine Wren, and of course, the Darksaber.

…So let’s start with a quick summary before we get to the trailer!
Why is Mandalore even under Siege?
To answer that, we need to do a quick history lesson. So, as you probably know from watching The Mandalorian, Mandalorian culture revolves around battle. However, this led to a series of bloody wars that led a significant number of Mandalorians to renounce combat entirely. The result was a schism between the pacifist New Mandalorians (led by Satine Kryze) and the militant Death Watch (led by Pre Vizsla). One big symbol in this war was the Darksaber, owned by Vizsla, which signified leadership of the Death Watch and (in the eyes of militant Mandalorians) the right to rule the planet.

Also, before you condemn the Death Watch for being violent, know that our friend Mando the Baby Yoda Adopter is a descendant of that tradition. The civil war between the New Mandalorians and the Death Watch came to a climax when an unexpected interloper entered the fray.
