What The Heck is Going on With Disney Cruise Line Right Now?

Disney Cruise Line is in a state of massive expansion. Between 2025 and 2031, eight new ships are scheduled to join the Disney fleet. Could they be moving too fast?

In my 30+ years following Disney theme parks, I’ve seen the Disney Cruise Line evolve from a new concept to one of the key components of Disney’s travel empire. However, in 2025, Disney Cruise Line has experienced a setback that has us curious about what exactly is going on with the upcoming Disney Adventure.

The Adventure is set to be Disney’s first ship to make its home port in Asia, specifically the Port of Singapore. According to Disney, the ship will see the “signature whimsy and wonder of favorite stories from Disney, Marvel and Pixar spring to life” while making 3- and 4-night sea voyages from the port of call.

During a 2025 earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger called the ship an ambassador for the company, saying, “When we went to the market and started selling trips on this ship, [they] were extremely robust, sold out very, very quickly over, I think, the first two quarters of operation. This will give us an opportunity to basically sail or float the Disney brand in all of its glory into a region that we think has huge Disney brand affinity, and it creates a huge opportunity for us.”

Originally, the Adventure was set to make its maiden voyage in December 2025. However, in September, Disney announced that the ship’s maiden voyage was being pushed back to March 10th, 2026. Passengers who were booked on the 2025 maiden voyage were automatically booked on the new maiden voyage at 50 percent off.

Those who were booked on the original maiden voyage but could not make the new date received a full refund and were offered 50 percent off a future Disney Cruise Line sailing, as long as the new sailing is booked by March 31st, 2026, and the cruise departs on or before March 31st, 2027.

Cruisers who were booked on other impacted sailings automatically received a full refund, plus 50 percent off a future Disney Cruise Line sailing. The new sailing must be booked by March 31st, 2026, and the cruise must depart on or before March 31st, 2027.

So, what happened to create a delay just months before the planned maiden voyage? The answer may lie in the Adventure’s origins. The ship didn’t begin construction as a Disney ship. Instead, the it was originally commissioned by Genting Hong Kong, a holding company that controls several travel companies.

The ship was to be called the Global Dream and would have sailed from Chinese ports during the summer season, and covering Southeast Asia, Oceania, and the West Coast of the United States during the remainder of the year. However, the Genting Hong Kong company went bankrupt following the pandemic, which led to an opening for Disney.

In November 2022, Disney purchased the still-under-construction ship from Meyer Werft (the shipyard that was building it, and the same shipbuilder that Disney contracts). And Disney got one heck of a deal! Initial speculation had the purchase price as high as $1 billion for the ship, but it was later revealed that Disney bought it for around $41 million. That’s what I call a liquidation sale.

Could that changeover be why the ship’s debut was delayed? The ship was reportedly 75 percent complete when Disney bought it — but probably needed remodeling to fit Disney’s plans.

Disney has emphasized that the pushed back maiden voyage was not a safety issue. As Joe Schott, President of Disney Signature Experiences, said in a press release. “As we work on the final touches to bring the Disney Adventure to our guests, we’ve encountered unexpected delays in the shipbuilding process. To ensure the experience we deliver reflects our commitment to excellence, we’ve made the decision to adjust our timeline. We know this may be disappointing to our guests, and we’re working directly with them to offer flexible rebooking options and uphold the trust they place in us.”

Transforming the ship may be taking longer than Disney planned, considering the amount of detail going into the ship. According to Disney, the Adventure will be made up of 7 themed areas — Disney Imagination Garden, Disney Discovery Reef, San Fransokyo Street, Marvel Landing, Toy Story Place, Town Square and Wayfinder Bay. It seems likely that overlaying these areas onto a superstructure they didn’t initially design or construct could have set construction back.

The delay of the Adventure has no effect on the upcoming launch of the Disney Destiny, which is set to make its maiden voyage on November 20th, 2025.

The Destiny, which will home port in Port Everglades, Florida, will be themed to Heroes and Villains, with environments based on “on the legacies of beloved Disney stories, characters, and theme park attractions” according to the company. This includes a Hercules stage show, as well as a heavy Marvel presence on the ship, including a Doctor Strange-themed lounge, character appearances, and even Spider-Man as a stern character.

Furthermore, FIVE more ships have been ordered for the line: Another Wish-class vessel ordered by the Oriental Land Company (owner of Tokyo Disney Resort), and four further ships announced at the 2024 D23 Ultimate Fan Event, one Wish class, and three in a new, slightly smaller class from the Meyer Werft shipyard.

According to the builder, this is the highest value order they have ever received. This should bring the fleet to a total of 13 vessels by 2031.

The Disney Adventure’s delay could be a sign that, in the midst of massive Cruise Line expansion, Disney may have overestimated just how quickly they could complete the retrofit of the ship, but the Disney Destiny is launching next month, and 5 more ships are on the way over the next 6 years.
