Every year, we see a swirl of predictions about whether Orlando will be warm, wet, chilly, or a little bit of everything. With a new season just around the corner, many of you are wondering if Disney World could be in for an unusually cold winter. We’ve pulled together what the major experts are saying so you know whether to pack those sweatshirts or stick with shorts.

The Farmer’s Almanac Outlook

The Farmer’s Almanac is calling for a cooler-than-usual winter across Florida, including Orlando, Tampa, Miami, and Jacksonville. On top of that, wetter-than-normal conditions are also predicted. That means you might see more rain showers than you’d expect during what’s usually a drier season in central Florida.

The Almanac points out that the coldest stretches will likely hit from mid- to late December and continue through much of January. If you’re visiting Disney World during the holiday season, that could translate to mornings and evenings that feel downright chilly. And while “Florida cold” is not the same thing as a snowstorm up north, temperatures dipping into the 40s or 50s can definitely change how comfortable you feel walking around the parks all day. There’s also a note of caution from the Almanac about tropical activity. Early November could bring a tropical depression, which isn’t typical for this late in hurricane season. That’s something to keep an eye on if you’ve got an early-winter Disney trip planned.

NOAA’s Prediction

Meanwhile, NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has a very different read on the season. Their long-range outlook for January through March shows the Southeast—including Florida—likely experiencing above-normal temperatures.

There’s even a 60–80% chance that the region could lean warmer than average. In other words, NOAA is leaning toward an early spring vibe instead of a prolonged cold spell. If that pans out, you could see warmer park days as early as February, which would feel more like the Florida weather most people expect.

When it comes to rainfall, NOAA predicts the opposite of the Almanac. Their outlook shows the Southeast, particularly Florida, trending drier than usual during that January-to-March window. That means less chance of those constant soggy afternoons, which would be good news if you hate dealing with ponchos and wet sneakers in the parks.

What USA Today Found

Adding one more voice into the mix, USA Today summarized the Farmer’s Almanac’s forecast for the Southeast and landed on “mild and wet” as the overall winter picture. That lines up with the Almanac’s call for below-normal temps in Florida and wetter-than-average conditions.

USA Today highlighted that the second week of January could bring some very cold temperatures, though most of that wintry precipitation would be in northern states like Virginia and West Virginia. Still, central Florida visitors in January should expect some chilly days, even if you don’t see snowflakes drifting down over Cinderella Castle. February is expected to stay wet, especially mid-month, with things turning a bit more mild by the end of it. If you’ve got an early spring break trip, you might want to prep for unsettled weather but still expect that signature Florida humidity to creep back in.

How You Can Prepare

If you’re planning a Disney trip in the next few months, the best thing you can do is build flexibility into your packing list. That means:

  • A light jacket or sweatshirt for evenings and early mornings. Pack and wear layers!!
  • Comfortable rain gear—ponchos, waterproof shoes, or quick-dry clothing—since the rain forecasts are mixed.
  • Short sleeves and breathable clothes, because warmer days can still pop up even in January.

Disney World is one of those places where you’ll see people in shorts and tank tops walking right past guests bundled up in hoodies and scarves, all on the same day. The weather changes quickly, and this winter looks like it’ll keep us guessing even more than usual. So while the experts debate whether Florida will be mild, wet, cold, or warm, the safest bet is to prepare for all of the above.
