If you’re traveling soon, it’s important to stay on top of the latest travel news.

Things like airport updates and travel trends are great to stay in the loop on, and you’ll probably want to keep an eye on the weather for your destination. But what about travel advisory updates? Well, a new one was just released for the Dominican Republic.
The U.S. Department of State releases travel advisory updates for locations where Americans may want to be careful traveling to. The reasons for these updates can vary, but a new update was just released for the Dominican Republic due to crime.

The Department of State website now says the following: “Violent crime is a concern in the Dominican Republic despite more police presence in areas often visited by tourists. Do not display wealth, and be wary of meeting individuals from online in secluded locations.”

If you decide to travel to the Dominican Republic, the government warns that violent crime is a concern throughout the country and affects “all residents regardless of nationality.” The following resources are available to tourists:
- 911 emergency response system
- Professional tourist police force (POLITUR)
- Private security personnel in resorts

Visitors are advised to pay attention to their surroundings, not to carry valuable items, and to be vigilant about where their phone is located and not to use it openly on the street. It’s also advised to travel with a group when possible and to not leave your food or beverages unattended.
This is a level 2 travel advisory, which means to exercise increased caution. If you have more questions or concerns, see the Department of State website.
