This Tourism “Scam” Feels Like an Elementary School Project Went Very, Very Wrong

In fact, there’s a tourism scam happening in China that literally makes a mountain out of a molehill. Let this be a lesson to you: not all tourist destinations are as good as they may sound.

According to myNEWS, a new attraction called Universe Fantasy Land, located in the Hebei province of northern China, is the latest travel “fail.” What is artfully described as a volcano (you know, like Mount Fuji) — complete with “eruptions” — is actually just a hill.

This tourist spot is painted like the summit of Mount Fuji and costs 98 yuan ($13 USD) to visit.

The attraction was envisioned to be a fairy tale land that would feature a lush mountain, a beautiful lake, green grass, and a white horse — everything that would make guests feel like they’d escaped from their busy lives and get a chance to relax in a fairy tale for a moment. However, many people who visited felt scammed by the experience, as the “mountains” are nothing more than modest hills — especially since the management team from local Linqigu Real Estate Company described the hill as a “volcano” with eruptions on the weekends, with pink smoke. This is one of those “Expectation vs. Reality” tourist attractions that’s probably best to AVOID.

People online quickly said they felt the experience was far from worth the entrance price, pointing out as well that you don’t need a ticket to take photos of the real Mount Fuji, but you do for the fake one!
