According to a new University of Houston study looking at entertainment options wanted by those who live in the city, one of the most requested options is a theme park. Houstonians also said they would visit a local theme park often. “A large proportion, more than half, say they would go once a year,” Rice University Baker Institute Fellow in Political Science, Mark Jones, said. “If you go down to parents with children under the age of 18, 40% said they would go twice a year, if not more.”

Theme park industry experts are aware of the study, including those at International Theme Park Services. Dennis Speigel, founder of that group, mentioned that it may even have theme park investors looking closer at the city and that he already knows of a few who are doing just that. “The next step would be to hire an organization to do a feasibility study that would develop the economics and metrics for what size of a park,” he said.

Houston was supposed to make a huge theme park announcement for the city, but plans were scrapped just before the pandemic.

Because Houston’s population continues to grow, Spiegel believes a theme park could be announced for Houston in the next five years. He said, “If you’re going to build one, you want to put it in the market that can facilitate and serve it, and Houston is one of those remaining markets.”

So if you live in the Houston area, there’s hope a new theme park could be coming your way soon.
