The series logline states that it “follows Harry Slate (Wallace), an old-school and outspoken Alabama car wash owner, who has a lot of soul searching to do when the estranged child he thought was a son returns home to Mobile as a proud, trans woman, Desiree (Cox).”

Clean Slate was co-created by Wallace and Cox along with Dan Ewen, who all served as executive producers along with Lear, Brent Miller, and Simran Baidwan.

Before its cancelation, the series received positive reviews from critics, with an 89% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
