Many people aren’t fans of when Disney remakes their films or TV series. Listen, for some of the remakes, I totally hear you, but my unpopular opinion is that I LOVE some of them.
The Lion King live-action movie? I LOVED it. Don’t get me started on the live-action Aladdin — I get “Speechless” stuck in my head at least once a week and couldn’t care less that it wasn’t in the original movie. The truth is that I wasn’t a very big Disney/Disney Princess kid growing up AND I have an older brother, so if I was watching Disney, it was more the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Lilo & Stitch, WALL-E, Chicken Little, Toy Story, and Monsters, Inc., just to name a few. So these remakes are often sometimes the first time I’m really SEEING the story for the first time, and the same can be said for many others my age. All that to say, I just found out Disney could be making a TV series of one of my FAVORITE Disney movies and I’m THRILLED.
In school, English/literature was always my favorite subject, and it was very rare that there was a book we read that I didn’t like. I remember reading the book Holes by Louis Sachar, published in 1998 and really enjoying it. After we finished reading the book, my teacher put the movie on, and I really enjoyed the adaptation, feeling it really stayed true to the story.
Ever since then, I repeatedly return to watch the movie every now and then, sort of as a comfort film, in a way. So imagine my surprise when I see that Disney+ has picked up a new Holes TV series and has greenlit a pilot to be made!
The original film, starring Shia LaBeouf as Stanley, came out in 2003 (it wasn’t until many years later I was reading/watching it in school — I was 2 when it came out). Iconic quotes from the film resurface every now and then on social media, most notably, “I’m tired of this, Grandpa!” “That’s too **** bad!” — personally, I quote that one all the time.
The potential new show will still be based on the book, but here’s the kicker, and I know some people are going to be mad about this, but I’m stoked — the official logline states, “In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.”
HECK. YES. I am all for this new version and really hope the pilot, written and executive produced by Alina Mankin with Liz Phang as executive producer and showrunner, will be successful and we’ll see a whole series out of it. According to Variety, Walden Media, who produced the original film, has actually been trying to get a TV series version off the ground for quite some time, so it’s very exciting that this could finally be happening.
Again, I know it’s controversial and many people say, “create new things, don’t remake the same ones” but here’s the thing — numbers show that oftentimes people aren’t interested in seeing something that’s entirely new. More frequently, people prefer something that’s familiar in one way or another instead of totally new, but then you’ve got a split — you have those who enjoy the changes made to something to make it unique, and then you’ve got others who more wanted a carbon copy. I see both sides of the argument, but I’ll tell you one thing — if this series gets off the ground, you better believe I will be SAT in front of my TV screen and watching it the moment it comes out.

I am HYPED to hear about this, thanks to AllEars and JP for sharing the news because I had not heard of this! I think there’s always room for re-imagining a movie or show when it’s done well. Sometimes a change is even a much-needed, sometimes it’s just fun, both are valid! I see so many of my fellow ’90s kids online acting like Disney remakes are an attack on their own childhood, forgetting about younger people like this writer, not to mention future generations. Holes is one of my favorite books since I read it in school, and the movie is maybe my TOP favorite book-to-movie adaptation ever… Fingers crossed this show works out!
