Yet Another Disney Princess Movie Is Getting the Live-Action Treatment

Disney is adapting another iconic animated film to live action.

Over the last decade and a half, Disney has fully embraced producing live-action adaptations of their well-known animated films. Despite some mixed critical and commercial results, enough of these films have been massive hits (Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King) that the company continues to make them, with versions of Snow White, Lilo & Stitch, and Moana coming in the next two years. Now, Disney has confirmed work on another live-action remake, this time tackling one of their most well-renowned films of the 2010s.

In mid-December 2024, Variety confirmed a Deadline report that Disney is developing a live-action “reimagining” of Tangled, which itself was a somewhat modernized spin on the classic Brothers Grimm story of Rapunzel.

According to the report, the film will be helmed by director Michael Gracey — best known for the Hugh Jackman musical vehicle The Greatest Showman — based on a script by writer Jennifer Kaylin Robinson (Do Revenge, Thor: Love and Thunder, and the newest version of I Know What You Did Last Summer). As of now, there is no casting or realize date confirmed for the film.

Disney’s original Tangled was released in 2010. The film, which had a long and tumultuous development process that included title, story, and even animation-style changes, altered the base fairy tale into an adventurous romance between the imprisoned Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) and the dashing rouge Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi).

The film grossed $592 million at the global box office (which was viewed as a minor success vs its budget), earned an Oscar nod for the song “When Will My Life Begin”, and led to several spinoffs including the Tangled Ever After short film and the Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure TV series, and a musical presentation on the Disney Cruise Line.

In addition, the film and its characters have been added to several Disney theme parks including bathrooms at the Magic Kingdom…

…a mini-land and attraction as part of Tokyo DisneySea’s Fantasy Springs, and an upcoming ride at the Disneyland Paris resort.
