Planning a Disney vacation comes with so many decisions – what parks to visit, dining reservations to book, and, of course, where to stay.
While there are plenty of great hotel options, Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter turned out to be one of my all-time favorites. But, as much as I loved it, there were a few things I wish I’d known before my stay that would have made the experience even better. So, if you’re considering staying at French Quarter, let me save you some trial and error. Here’s what I wish I’d known!
When I booked my stay at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter, I had visions of charming cobblestone streets, colorful Mardi Gras vibes, and a calm escape from the hustle and bustle of the parks.
And while all of that was true, there were a few things I really wish I had known before staying here. If you’re planning your visit, take notes so you can maximize the magic at this unique and charming Disney resort.
The Food Court Is a Hidden Gem
I wasn’t expecting much from the food court at a moderate resort, but wow – Port Orleans French Quarter completely changed my mind. Not only is the theming on point (you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a vibrant New Orleans square), but the food is absolutely next-level.
Let me be clear: I genuinely preferred eating here over some of the options in the parks. What was the highlight? I’m glad you asked. The beignets.
These aren’t just any beignets—they’re piping hot, perfectly fluffy, and dusted with enough powdered sugar to satisfy even the biggest sweet tooth. Snagging a plate as a late-night snack after a long day in the parks is chef’s kiss.
Oh, and if you’re a fan of convenience, the dining options here don’t stop at sugary treats. The fact that I could grab a quick bite and snag an adult beverage to take back to my room made life so easy. Whether you’re in the mood for a snack, a drink, or a full meal, the Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory is a seriously underrated gem.

Preferred Rooms Are Worth Every Penny
Before our stay, I booked a preferred room in Building 2. And honestly? I’ll never book anything else. The convenience of being so close to everything – the food court, the pool, the lobby – was an absolute game-changer.
Imagine this: You’ve just returned from a full day at Magic Kingdom, and all you want is to drop off your park bag and grab a quick snack. With a preferred room, you’re just steps away from everything you need. No long walks from the back of the resort. No debating whether you should make the trek for that late night beignet run (spoiler: the answer is always yes).
Having a preferred room at Port Orleans French Quarter made it feel like an intimate escape without sacrificing an ounce of convenience. If you’re someone who values proximity to the main amenities, do yourself a favor and splurge on that upgrade.
Final Thoughts
Staying at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter turned out to be such a pleasant surprise. From the incredible food court (seriously, try the beignets) to the convenience of a Preferred Room and the overall charm of the resort, it quickly became one of my favorite places to stay at Disney.
So, again, if you’re planning a trip, my advice is simple: don’t sleep on the food court, consider upgrading to a Preferred Room, and leave some time to soak in the resort vibes. Trust me, French Quarter has a way of making the magic last long after you leave the parks.

Have you stayed at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter? Tell us in the comments.Â
This was our family favorite resort for many years, and we still love dropping in at both Port Orleans locations for food and Yee Haw Bob’s show. The boat ride is great, and the smallness of the resort was appreciated. However, through no fault of Port Orleans (other than their prices kept going up$$$), we discovered that renting points at DVC’s got us more for our money (kitchen or kitchenette’s specifically). Our favorite is Saratoga Springs due to its proximity to Disney Springs. Might consider a future stay at the French Quarter just for sentimental reasons if we could snag a special.
French Quarter is my wife’s and I second favorite resort (behind Wilderness Lodge). We have stayed there 6 times in the last few years. I also agree you don’t need a preferred room as the resort is small and beautifully landscaped. Another positive is the short, pleasant boat ride to Disney Springs. The updated rooms are very nice. Taking a walk along the river, especially in the evening, is enjoyable. And don’t forget the jazz band at Scat Cat’s on the weekends. Overall just a wonderful place to stay. Oh yeah, reasonable price too, especially if you take advantage of one of the discounts Disney offers.
Are you kidding me? After coming back from Magic Kingdom, EVERYTHING was closed! The parking is so far from any room with a river view and the quick service restaurant was extremely limited and in such a small area, I can see why. The boat “transportation” only takes you to Disney Springs and only half the rooms at the French Quarter are updated. In my opinion it’s a larger version of All Stars Music’s Jazz area, with less “life”. I never heard any Jazz music and other than the cheap 3 beaded necklaces in the shape of Mickey, it didn’t feel Mardi Gras or New Orleans in anyway. In my opinion, it should not even be considered a Moderate Resort; it should be a value resort.
I agree French Quarter is our favorite. It is one of the smallest properties @ WDW. Another bonus is being able to go to Riverside to eat @ a table service restaurant.
My preference is not the preferred room/bldg, but a waterfront location. French Quarter is a very quiet place at night. But while the waterfront is further from the main building the walk and solitude is fantastic after a day in the park.
