If you’ve traveled frequently, then you’ve probably experienced your fair share of flight delays.

Sometimes they’re more common, like when there’s a bad weather surge or heavy holiday travel crowds. And if you’re on a tight travel schedule, a delay can be incredibly frustrating. That’s why United Airlines has started a new policy!
According to CNBC, United Airlines will now be using “generative artificial intelligence” to send travelers links to live radar maps, in order to prove why their flights are delayed. This will be provided by flight-tracking platform FlightAware, and will also feature other delay information if necessary, like mechanical issues or airport congestion.

This technology was announced on Wednesday, July 3rd and will be put to the test during the 4th of July holiday weekend, when United expects to set a record with 5 million people flying from June 28th-July 8th. This is a 7% increase in travelers as compared to 2023.

Weather is a common cause of flight delays, as thunderstorms can pop up randomly and be unpredictable, causing flights to be rerouted in the air. A thunderstorm hundreds of miles away can affect your flight if the pilots and crew are trying to get to your airport to fly your trip.

Hopefully, this initiative by United Airlines will help consumers better understand what’s going on behind the scenes and will keep them more in the know about their travel plans, in case they need to alter them. We know it can be incredibly frustrating to wait at the airport without explanation, so this may remedy some of that.

We’ll be interested to see how this system works over the next few days, so let us know if you get any updates from United! If you’re traveling over the holiday weekend, make sure to plan ahead by arriving at the airport early and being patient as the employees deal with heavier crowds than normal.
