It’s been over 20 years since the first Lord of the Rings film by Peter Jackson was released.

We’ve since seen more films released within this same world, and even a Lord of the Rings series. But in the era of reboots, sequels, and remakes, could it be time to revisit Middle-earth? Apparently, it might be!
The Orlando Sentinel has shared that Warner Bros. Pictures is planning to revamp the Lord of the Rings franchise. Studio leaders Mike De Luca and Pam Adby recently brokered a deal to create multiple films based on the Lord of the Rings books.
While no names are officially attached to this new project, previous director Peter Jackson stated that Warner Bros. has kept him and some of his main collaborators from the original films in the loop during these discussions.

Jackson along with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens shared, “We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.”
Lee Guinchard, CEO of Freemode (who made the adaptive rights deal for some of the books including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit), shared that they are excited to bring “the incomparable world of J.R.R. Tolkien back to the big screen in new and exciting ways.” According to Guinchard, they plan to “honor the past, look to the future, and adhere to the strongest level of quality and production values.”

According to De Luca and Abdy, though some of the world has been brought to the big screen, “the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored.”

Whether the beloved characters and the actors who played them in the early 2000s will return still remains a mystery. Orlando Bloom recently shared how he would be interested in revisiting his role as Will Turner from the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, but also mentioned how great it was to revisit Legolas. So anything is possible!

There are plenty of questions to be answered about these new films, but we’re excited to see what’s in store for our favorite hobbits! Stay tuned for more news.
