Disney Princess dolls are a majorly popular Disney collectible, for kids and adults alike!
For the past seven years, toy brand Hasbro Inc. possessed the rights to produce Disney Princess dolls. Now that’s changing, and here’s what you need to know.
Before Hasbro owned the license to produce Disney Princess dolls, Mattel Inc, home of the legendary Barbie doll, held the lucrative rights. According to Reuters, as of today, Mattel Inc. has reclaimed the Disney Princess doll rights.
As a result of winning the license back, Mattel’s shares increased by 11%. Chief Executive Ynon Kriez said, “This has been a key priority as part of our turnaround and we worked very hard to win it…the way we see it Disney Princess and Frozen are back home where they belong.”
Mattel will be able to produce Disney Princess dolls as well as Frozen dolls, and they will even create dolls for the upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid in 2023. Mattel will also create Cars and Toy Story merchandise, even for the upcoming Pixar film, Lightyear.
Hasbro has renewed their rights to produce Star Wars merchandise as well as Indiana Jones items, although they will no longer be producing Disney Princess dolls.
Mattel has reported increased sales recently as a result of their new Barbie dolls featuring diverse skin tones, clothing, and body sizes. We’re excited to see how their Disney Princess dolls turn out!
