NEWS: Florida Governor Allows Reopening of Some Florida Beaches

While most non-essential businesses and large gathering spots like Disney World are still closed across the nation, the first signs of reopening are happening right now in Florida.

Governor Ron DeSantis announced that some Florida beaches would be allowed to reopen today with restricted hours. Duval County, which the city of Jacksonville falls under, became one of the first to reopen, but the mayor has stressed the importance of adhering to guidelines, as the state is still under a stay-at-home order through April 30th.

Mayor Lenny Curry maintains that gatherings of 50 or more people are still prohibited and beach-goers must still practice social distancing. “Folks, this could be the beginning of the pathway back to normal life, but please respect and follow these limitations,” Curry said. “We’ll get back to life as we know it, but we must be patient.”

The beaches opened up early this morning at 6 AM until 11 AM. The beaches will reopen again from 5 PM through 8 PM. Governor DeSantis also stated that some municipalities could make decisions on whether or not to begin reopening parks and beaches very soon. Currently, Florida is under a statewide stay-at-home order through April 30th.
