If I Ruled the World – Part Two

Yesterday, I presented Part 1 of my “If I Ruled the World” blog — things I would change at Walt Disney World given I had the power. Today I give you the second half of my list.

6. If I ruled the World I’d improve the seating in the Theater in the Wild at the Animal Kingdom.

The seating within the Theater in the Wild is made up of long benches constructed of hardwood slats. They are very attractive to look at, but they are very uncomfortable to sit on. My behind has plenty of padding, but after sitting through a 35 minute show, not to mention the 10-15 minutes of sitting before the performance begins, my butt hurts big time. I’m not a fan of the seating for the Festival of the Lion King show either, but at least the benches here are solid (not slats) and they don’t hurt my rear end nearly as much. Wooden slats just don’t cut it. When I’m in charge of the World, cushions will be secured to the Theater in the Wild benches.

7a. If I ruled the World I’d decrease the redundancy of Disney merchandise.

Disney merchandise is a major cash cow for the company. And within Disney World, it outsells non-Disney merchandise by an incredible margin. This cannot be ignored. Still, I believe a certain amount of magic has been lost when the fiscal bottom-line is the only consideration when deciding what to sell in the parks. Over the years, unique shops (like the Old World Antiques shop in Liberty Square) have been converted to selling only Disney branded products. I believe the Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios are the worst offenders. Epcot and the Animal Kingdom still have some distinctive stores. This wouldn’t be so bad if the Disney merchandise was unique in every shop, but so much of it is repeated over and over again. For example, a few years ago, a western clothing shop in Frontierland was converted to another Disney pin shop. Do we really need another pin shop?

How many of you have fond memories of the Magic Shop on Main Street? Or the Penny Arcade? Or the Disney Cinema? All of these have been lost to Disney merchandise.

If the decision was mine, I’d bring back a few of these uniquely, non-Disney shops.

7b. If I ruled the World I would remove the Emporium addition from Main Street.

Actually, I wouldn’t. This would be fiscally irresponsible. The building is here, now we have to learn to live with it. However, if I had been ruling the World when this idea was proposed, I would have nixed it immediately. As I mentioned above, the Magic Kingdom already has redundancy in the products they sell. There certainly wasn’t a need for more shelf space on Main Street. I miss the simple charm of Center Street.

Emporium Addition

8. If I ruled the World I’d bring back the “Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends” show at the Animal Kingdom.

I love the Animal Kingdom. It’s my favorite park to “hang out” in. It is incredibly peaceful here and I love just walking from one land to another. Still, the Animal Kingdom needs a few more rides and attractions. Not everyone is content to just wander and do nothing while visiting this park.

Of all the lands in the Animal Kingdom, Camp Minnie-Mickey has the least to offer. Of course, there is the ever popular Festival of the Lion King show, but other than that, character meet-and-greets are all that’s available now-a-days.

I know you’re thinking to yourself, “Jack, you rule the World. Why not build Beastly Kingdom? Camp Minnie-Mickey is where it was to be located before it was shelved indefinitely.”

Well, I’ll tell you, building Beastly Kingdom is on my list of things to do – once we can afford it (and consider a dozen other factors). But until that day, I’d reopen the “Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends” show and increase its capacity a bit so more guests could enjoy it.

For those of you unfamiliar with the show, Pocahontas introduced the audience (especially the children) to an array of forest creatures. A porcupine, a possum, a raccoon, a rabbit, a skunk, and a few others were all brought center stage and Pocahontas helped us understand their place in nature. This was a charming show.

Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends

9. If I ruled the World I would construct some sort of roof over the seating area of several theaters.

Disney built a wonderful stage at Downtown Disney. It is primarily used by guest performers invited by Disney to entertain the shoppers. However, the seating area was left unprotected from the elements. What were the Imagineers thinking? Don’t they know that the summer sun is blistering and the occasional downpours drenching?

The same is true of the Tomorrowland stage in the Magic Kingdom. The viewing area is completely unprotected. No one wants to melt in the sun while seeing a show. I believe that the short-lived “Stitch’s Supersonic Celebration” show failed because of a lack of shade.

If I ruled the world, both of these seating areas would be covered. I realize that this decree would be a little more expensive than some of my other proposals, but not outrageously so. And Disney owes this little bit of consideration to its guests.

10. If I ruled the World, I’d bring back the canoes and/or the keel boats at the Magic Kingdom.

In the early years of Disneyland, Walt looked out at the Rivers of America and said, “We need more traffic on the water” (or something along those lines). Soon after, the Sailing Ship Columbia joined the Frontierland fleet.

The canoes and keel boats are very low capacity. And guests see the same exact sights from these vessels as can be viewed from the Liberty Belle. Yet, they are unique and fun. The canoes are still a staple at Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland. Obviously they are popular. Something that the current decision makers seem to forget, the canoes and keelboats bring joy not only to the riders, but those along the banks watching them sail by.

Canoe on Rivers of America

Well, those are just a few of my ideas. If none of these ever happen, I’ll still love Disney World, but I’d love it just a little bit more if some of these changes took place.

I’d enjoy hearing what YOU would do if you ruled the World. But remember, try to be somewhat practical. Tell me what you think could be done better without breaking the bank or impacting the bottom line too severely.

  1. Hi Jack,

I know I’m a few years late on this one, but I’ve been reading your blog backwards over the past few weeks. Let me tell you they are awesome. If I ruled the world the first thing I would do is reopen Mr. Toads Wild Ride. That was my favorite ride when I was younger and ever since they put Pooh in over there I have an irrational dislike of Pooh. So much so that I won’t let my newborn have any Winnie the Pooh outfits. I recently went back to Disneyland after 14 years and rode Mr Toad 5 times in a row. They need to bring this classic back to WDW. They can leave Pooh, but find some room for Mr Toad. Keep up the great work, I promise I’ll try to comment on some new posts.

  2. Hi Jack,

I really like the idea that was suggested of having ‘nap cubicles’. I’d definitely spend money on that!

I would bring back the Hunchback show that was in MGM. Although, since that particular show is older, the soundstage could be used to perform a more recent movie.

Speaking of soundstages, I’d also re-create the Soundstage restaurant that is where Playhouse Disney now resides. I made so many memories there! Where else can you meet Phoebus, John Smith, and Hercules?

What about bringing out the rare characters more often? In the 25+ times I’ve been to WDW, I’ve only ever seen Brer Rabbit once! And he wasn’t even near Splash Mountain. Not everyone wants to see the princesses all the time! (On that note, I’d also like to see a character meal geared towards boys. Again, not everyone wants to see the princesses!).

Lastly, I’d bring back the Tarzan show in AK. My family and I can’t stand the Nemo show.

    🙂

  3. I just returned from WDW this week and while there I realized how much I wished the hotel quick service restaurants stayed opened later. We always stay at Pop and they close at midnight..well the MK was open til 1am and we got back hungry and thirsty and ended up eating out of a vending machine and ordering food off property to be delivered. I wish they would adjust the hours of the resort food being open to coincide with the hours of the parks.

  4. Speaking with someone who fell and injured herself on the first day of her last trip and ended up in a wheelchair for the rest of it, I most certainly would not have found it less stressful to have to wait around for the wheelchair-only bus instead of riding with my family. There are two wheelchair spaces per bus, and it never took more than five minutes to get both chairs in. In a place where you’re going to spend so much time waiting to get on things, surely five minutes isn’t too much to ask of you, who should be thankful for your two good legs?

I’m not saying I was glad to get injured, but it certainly opened my eyes to the ugly side people can show when they think someone else is getting an advantage. Believe me, the people in wheelchairs would much rather be doing things the same way you’re able to.

  5. My daughter and I just read my wife’s comments and thought we could add some things- one being completely free for Disney that would enhance the visitor’s experience: ban screen use during performances. The last time we saw Voyage of the Little Mermaid, we had to see it through the constant texting and photo editing of the woman in front of us. Those little screen lights are really distracting. She was only there for the A/C! Or have you ever sat close in the Beauty and the Beast show? Loads of dads with their camcorders filming the entire show. They don’t use viewfinders anymore, they use 2 or 3 inch lcd screens and if you’re behind or next to them, you’re watching through them too. Don’t they know most of this stuff is on You Tube?
    Also,
The 3 Caballeros needs sprucing up-maybe put something in that stage at the end of the ride.

My daughter loves the Toy Story Character meal idea, and also wishes they had a Villain Character meal. She says most kids 6 or older get that it’s not real and understand that the bad guy makes the movie! Pixar villains like Stinky Pete or Randal are noticeably absent everywhere, even in pins.

One Man’s Dream shouldn’t cost much to expand- would LOVE to see that-or how about an interactive replica of Pixar Studios sponsored by this partner?
Money should be spent on the HS latest parade, it’s not very good. And move the big hat!

We we’re lucky enough last Christmas vacation to stroll around Animal kingdom after dark. It had such a mystical feeling about. We went on EE (please fix the yeti!), ate at Yak and Yetis and strolled around. There wasn’t a lot more to do( well maybe with Avatar coming that’ll change) and we don’t waste time in the shops, it’s all the same. It was just a nice place to be. Very romanic! Bring back night hours there.

Speaking of spending money when it comes to the Fantasyland expansion we’re nonplussed. The company is usually so good with tie-ins. They’ve announced
the end of princess movie productions, yet they want to spend a boatload of money on a project that celebrates them. We’re not excited about it. Why go to Gaston’s pub when you can’t even get a beer? Why is the MK dry anyway?
The expansion money would be much better spent on all the renovations of or reopening of the attractions mentioned in this blog.

Lastly, my wife always wanted them the bring back Pluto on Waterskis! And please put a hot tub in at the Poly!
Thanks, Jack, and please keep posting!

    Jack’s Answer:

Since you asked a question (buried in the middle of all that), I’ll answer it.

Why is the Magic Kingdom dry?

Before Disneyland, the only amusement parks were cheap and tawdry — and usually run by “run-down” people. It was very common to see someone drunk in these parks. Walt wanted to change all that in his new park, Disneyland. But the only solution he saw was to make his park dry. BTW, Walt did drink alcohol.

When the Magic Kingdom opened in Florida, it too was dry.

It wasn’t until Epcot opened that we first saw liquor available to the general public. The Imagineers knew liquor was absolutely necessary in the restaurants of World Showcase. Epcot proved that you could have a family park and still serve alcohol.

When Disneyland Paris, opened, there was still no booze — let’s keep it out of the Magic Kingdom-type parks. But the Europeans objected strenuously and Disney had to relent and it is now served in restaurants there. However, liquor is not served in Tokyo Disneyland but it IS served in Tokyo DisneySea. Liquor is not served at Hong Kong Disneyland.

Disney wants to keep the Magic Kingdom-type parks “family” oriented so the tradition goes on. And if they ever did decide to open up the Magic Kingdom to alcohol, all heck would break loose. The press would have a field day and complaints would be endless. So it’s just easier to keep the status quo.

  6. Hi Jack, I forgot to mention I agreed with most of your ideas, although I think I heard Aunt Polly’s was attracting alligators . Has anyone else heard that?
Also, regarding al the stores, much of it isn’t up to the uniqueness or quality it use to be. For example,7 or 8 years age when my kid was nuts for ArIel, I got quite of bit of Little Mermaid stuff. Nowadays, the dolls faces look more…generic. it’s just a red haired barbie in her clothes. All the princesses lack that personalized look they used to have. There’s not that much in the way of unique items anymore and we buy so much less because of it.

    Jack’s Answer:

How do these rumors get started? Why would Aunt Polly’s attract gators? Is it that folks are throwing so much food into the Rivers of America that it draws their attention? If this were the case, then every Disney restaurant that sits on the water would be doing the same thing — like the counter service restaurant at the Mexico Pavilion and Flame Tree BBQ at the Animal Kingdom.

Gators are constantly invading the rivers and lakes at Walt Disney World. When this happens, they are captured and returned to the wild.

  7. I really miss the magic shop and the Pochahontas show. The magic shop was part of the magic of my childhood, and Pochahontas was just a cute, well designed show. True, it wasn’t Festival of the Lion King, but it wasn’t meant to be.

I also agree with the other posters on the little orange drinks (bring back Orange Bird, too, he is a popular cult figure now, although I realize there may be licensing issues) and on Carousel of Progress. Maybe they should go with 60’s/70’s technology in the last scene so it won’t get outdated? But seriously, how much would it cost to update the appliances and electronics? I’m sure they’d get them from sponsors for free. The remaining parts of the House of Tomorrow at Innoventions at Disneyland are very current.

  8. Hi Jack, I have mentioned this in the past, but I would like the final scene in Carrousel of Progress to get some new set decoration. I also think it would be fun to construct some new scenery to view from the Magic Kingdom’s railroad and the tomorrow land Speedway. I can not speak for everyone else, but I do not necessarily need the most technologically advanced animatronic stuff to entertain me. I am perfectly pleased with simple visual tricks like those created by Yale Gracey! I also would design a ride where it feels like you are reclined in a Lazy Boy being transported through a journey that lasts about 10 minutes maybe following the story of Pixar’s Up. I would also create a club for kids that want to become imagineers, that meets once a month with a focus of improving WDW. Then the kids could have one project a year that they work on together.

  9. Long time I didn’t read your blog and I love it!! I think everybody dreams about ruling the World some day.
I agree with most of your points!
At the merchandise point I remember my family had a “must do” when you see something buy right away because you won’t find it anywhere else (that was in 1996), but in my last trip in May of this year I totally forgot it because you find everything everywhere!!! Some of the magic of going to a different park was find a whole different merchandise…exclusive merchandise of the park or ride.

If I ruled the world I would:
    1.- Build Pixie Hollow
2.- I love characters and I love to make long lines to get a photo and autograph, but we can find some characters at 4 parks (obviously Mickey and the gang are not included in this rule, they are a must) But I would make some changes in order to keep the character to the park related for example: you can find Pooh or Stitch in the 4 parks, is it necessary? So I will make the change in order to keep Pooh at Making Kingdom near his attraction, Stitch either Magic Kingdom (Stitch Great Scape) or Epcot (Mission to Mars). Also I would include some old-new characters: Fairy God Mother, Hercules, Meg, Maleficient, Cruella, the dwarfs. We don’t have to see them all the day…maybe 2 or 3 time a week…
3.- Jack Sparrow not only in the pirate training. I want a nice and good photo of me…with me! And I know that a lot of people want it too.
4.- A good music store at Downtown Disney. I’m a widow of Virgin store, and I really miss it. I live in Chile, so here I can’t find the half of Disney music (my collection counts with the spanish and english versions of most of the Disney soundtracks). In my recent trip was sad to see that the stores were poor of material…I didn’t find nothing new

mmm If I keep thinking maybe I would have a blog of my own! LOL

  10. We visit Disney World approximately four times a year from NY so I definitly agree that I would love to see some kind of frequent visitor program set up.
On one of our trips last year in the Animal Kingdom there was a section of fastpass machines for all the rides in one space. I found this to be a great idea and we were able to get a fastpass for one ride, eat lunch, then get another fast pass for another ride without running all over the park. I dont know if they were just testing this idea, but we had never seen it again after. I wish they would implement stations like this at all the parks in various locations.

    Jack’s Comment:

The “consolidated” FastPass machines at the Animal Kingdom was a test. I have no idea what the outcome of this test was.

  11. Jack:

I agree with you on everything. I would also like to add a few thoughts
First: the Coffee….PLEASE improve the coffee in the hotels and the parks, especially if I have to pay an arm and a leg for a refillable mug.
Second: The Great Movie ride needs an upgrade, I love it but it is getting tired
Third: Bring back Tarzan Rocks, recharge Indiana Jones (I love the ride in Disneyland)
Fourth: Bring back Tapestry of Nations.
And lastly, until recently I have grumbled about the wheelchairs and scooters in the parks until I needed them myself. I have a 90 yr old Mother that needed a wheelchair for probably her last visit to WDW. It was tough getting her on the bus, as she felt very embarrassed sometimes, but worse yet was getting her through the crowds, even tougher in the heat of August. I also needed a scooter to get around with relatives, (and by myself) when I blew out my knee 2 years ago and it was no fun, especially after fireworks or a parade. Many times we had to wait on line with everyone else (Soaring comes to mind). There are many older folks that can, yes, walk pretty well on their own, however they are trying to keep up with able bodied grandchildren and have a hard time keeping up the pace for 8-12 hrs a-day. The kids walk a lot faster, and have more stamina than grandma and grandpa, so they opt for a scooter to help keep up; sometimes sharing with each other when one gets tired.
So, my Disney friends, do not judge until you need one of these life-savers yourself.
I am sure there are some that take advantage (there always are), but renting these devices is expensive and there are many that need these devices for various reasons that you may not be aware of…
    OK, off my soap box

  12. Jack,

Like so many others I agree with your comment about the homogenization of the merchandise. The shops selling unusual things – the gallery in Cinderella Castle, the exotic merchandise in the various Adventureland shops, the House of Magic, the Yankee Trader shop, the old Frontierland Trading Post – how they added to my overall experience!

I can think of a few small ticket items I would tackle immediately:

    1) Green light the refurbishment of Carousel of Progress.
    2) Continue the good work in Adventureland by moving the flying carpets out. Maybe relocate them to Animal Kingdom?
    3) Open up the Adventureland Veranda. Figure out something cool to do with the space even if not a restaurant.
    4) Adjust the hours for Animal Kingdom to be even earlier. Right now it is only open 9-5, accept that it works better earlier in the day and change the hours to 8-4. Move the magic hour back to 7, or consider having “after dark” openings to spike interest.

  13. If I ruled the world….and I’m thinking of this as they announce they are thinking of changes to the program….I would allow guests to bring back the refillable/reuseable mugs. For those of us who visit once or more a year, we don’t need multiple mugs. To be environmentally sound and guest friendly, perhaps allow us to bring back our mugs and use them on future visits for a small fee – say slightly less than purchasing & using a new mug. I was just there in Dec/Jan and am returning in Nov – I don’t need a new mug and would be happy to bring mine back, pay a small fee & reuse it! I’ve suggested it to Disney to have a clip-on sensor/chip or using the keys to the world card to allow guests to bring back & reuse their mugs. Here’s hoping!

  14. Hey Jack,

Once again I agree with everything. To expand on the merchandise issues, I miss the specific merchandise to each land. When I was a kid you had to make it a point to check out each lands stores as each was different and you may have missed something special and unique. Nowadays you merely have to go to one of many stores to see whats or sale, seems to me this would have a negative financial impact. But, that’s my thought on it.

  15. The first thing we do when we get to Disneyland is run for those canoes. They’re charming and sweet and they aren’t going to appeal to everyone. We’ve never, ever had a problem getting on within a 20 minute wait and it’s nice to be able to lean on the rail and wave at the people going by (and vice versa). It seems to be one of those last quiet spots left at Disneyland that just soothes you when you’re wound up from the crowds. I mean, really, you’re beating up the water with an oar. It helps with the stress level, the sights help with your stress level, you have your own personal space and it’s just lovely.

I really like the Diamond Horseshoe idea. We went and saw the old show prior to it closing down. I’m so sad it’s gone. It’s such a gorgeous building, I can’t imagine why it’s sitting empty, either. Especially with Toy Story 3 having just come out! It’d have been ideal for promotional stuff to get younger kids interested in the characters and excited about the movie. Talk about a dropped ball!

I also agree about repetitive merchandise. Mostly, this is still Disneyland I’m talking about (Ah, not too much longer ’til I turn up in the ‘World. I hope =( ). Still. Do we need Cars shirts in 10 out of 11 stores? Especially all the same design? The same can be said of Pirates of the Caribbean merchandise. The ‘pirate princess’ thing was hot the last time we went and I saw it emblazoned on everything, and saw several different pieces of merchandise in different areas of the park over and over again. I realize stores sell out at peak times and multiple stores of the same stuff are totally a good thing, but uh. There’s kinda a limit on how many times I can see a pink shirt with ‘Pirate princess!’ on it and not sigh at the lack of new stuff in the Aladdin-esque themed store. I think that limit is something like 38. That shirt was everywhere.

Everything I ever saw about Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends was fantastic. It may be best to re-brand it since Pocahontas is starting to age and some kids may not be really aware of her, but the show was fantastic for Animal Kingdom. Speaking of Animal Kingdom, I worry for it. It seems like it’s being left out and unloved a lot. And it seems like a lot of people have lost interest because there’s just no draw for it. When it first opened there was TONS to do. Now? Not so much. AK needs a refresher like MGM/Disney Hollywood Studios needed in the mid 90’s. Clearly nothing beats out Magic Kingdom in terms of whimsy, but.. I don’t know. It seems that so much more could be being done with Animal Kingdom.

I completely agree with Aunt Polly’s getting re-opened. I also agree with getting rid of some of the character meals. They’re ridiculous and over the top if you’re a couple of adults just trying to enjoy Disney, and quite bluntly, several of the menus for them look excellent. I’d kind of like to be able to try their cooking, but I have 0 interest in dealing with a ton of screaming kids and/or dealing with what amounts to Disney-contracted cosplayers screwing with me while I’m eating. I’m alright with them in the park. If I’m eating, I’d just like to eat. There’s LOTS of restaurants, too, I agree with, that could offer character dining and force certain American palettes to expand. 😉

There’s a great lot of seating that could be improved upon in a great many areas. I also think it’d be a bit nice to have a few more areas off toward things like restrooms (not in front of them, but near them) and off-the-path sort of areas to just.. sit down for a moment and wait on your party or have a breather. I realize real estate is at a premium in Disney parks, but there’s no reason that you can’t have a few benches on a low traffic alleyway.

Oh dear. I seem to have written you a novel. =(

  16. Wow, you sure got a LOT of feedback on these ‘If I Ruled the World’ blogs! The only thing I’ll add to this is this…some of the things that are now gone that we miss are gone because of ‘guests’ and not because of Disney. Sadly there are (and always will be) people that are looking for ways to cheat the system. For instance, the buses going from DT Disney to the parks…people wanted to not pay parking so they clogged up that parking lot resulting in an inconvenience for the majority. In regards to scooters & wheelchairs…I agree that this is highly abused. To the previous comment from a guest defending her use of a scooter, people like you are not the issue. There should be exceptions in place for people with disabilities. However, if we honestly looked at all of the guests using the wheelchairs & scooters I think there would be A LOT that are ‘cheating’ the system. If it were truly just disabled people using these aids, there would not be the backlog in waits and I don’t think people would be as upset about waiting.
So really, most of these changes could be made for ‘free’ if everyone would just do the ‘right thing’…be honest & ethical…we’ve turned into a society where ‘its all about ME’ has taken a high priority. Sometimes the simplest & inexpensive things can create the most magical & enjoyable experiences.

Have I said how glad I am that you’re back?? I know I have, but I’m saying it again:)

  17. Hi Jack,

Your blogs are the best – thought provoking as always!

I agree with Peg that there has to be a way to get milk for tea at the quick service locations in resorts without always having to ask for it.

I don’t like chocolate (I know – weird isn’t it?) and I would really like to have the option on the dining plan to choose an appetizer instead of a dessert. There are so many chocolate choices that dessert is often less appealing to me.

I would bring back the chipotle butter (and there were two other flavours as well but that was my favourite!) at Crystal Palace.

Tarzan Rocks was a must for us to see but we only saw the Nemo show once in 10 trips. If I had my way it would return.

On the subject of Tarzan I think you had suggested in a blog about updating the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse with Tarzan theming – I like that idea.

Bring back the cute characters at Liberty Tree Tavern – it was the only reason to eat that turkey dinner! I also agree with you that an Aladdin themed dinner at Morocco would be welcome. I also think that a toy story meal would be welcome.

I would definitely like to see the Winter lights in Epcot again…it was a highlight of our Christmas trips…especially riding past on the monorail.

I collected special cream coloured dated Christmas mugs that you could buy at the Christmas stores. They were in a series of 5 different ones – they discontinued them – I would like them back…it was a must purchase.

I also wish they would bring back the unique stuffed Mickey’s and Minnie’s for Christmas time. I have them dated back to 2002 and the costumes used to be so unique. Now if they have them at all they are a cookie cutter version with the same costume from year to year. It was something that we always spent our money on. We also have them for other holidays but the Christmas ones were my favourites.

This one doesn’t affect Disney World directly but it is about the vacation planning videos – I would do another video with Erin, Stacey, Dave and Luke…we still have this video and will watch it over any new video put out by Disney. It’s a family favourite. It showed so many fun things to do that we have experienced and the bloopers at the end are hilarious! The new type of videos are the same every year with the same footage – the only thing different is the new rides.

Thanks for such a great blog and all the great suggestions by everyone – I hope Disney reads it!
    Wendy

  18. Nice to see you back Jack, if only for a moment. We miss you! What I would love to see (probably never going to happen), is for Disney to have a train type system around their larger parks such as Epcot and Animal Kingdom that would stop at the various themed areas. I’m thinking something along the same lines as the Busch Gardens train system. This would be a great way for guests to cool off from the heat, take a well-deserved break and it would also create a better traffic flow for the crowds. I’ve often thought these two parks were almost too big to really see in one day. A train system around the perimeter would enable you to see the park in one day without burning yourself out. Just a thought! Keep coming back Jack!

  19. Jack
    Great to have you back
I totally agree with your ideas – especially the Soarin’ fastpass as I’m the one who has to go and get them whilst the rest of the family are on Mission Space. I would also love to see the Horseshoe Saloon up and running properly – we have dined at the Paris version and it was great. Again I agree 100% about mechandise – I remember some great shops from my first visit back in the 90’s and would love some more unique items especially in the parks – there is Downtown Disney for the run of the mill branded stuff (I especially miss the Chritmas shop in Fantasyland – the DD one does not the same atmosphere) Also I would love to dine at Cinderellas Table but with teenage boys there is no hope whilst it’s full of princesses! What I would love to see assuming cost was no object would be the reopening of River Country and the Wonders of Life pavillion with some updates to the attractions.
Keep up the good work Jack

  20. It’s great to see you back and blogging regularly! I agree with your list as well.

I would bring back the Handwiches (although I think I am the only one who appreciated them). I would also bring back the Orange Juice in the little plastic oranges and I swear, there was a grape one, too.

Is that cheap and cheerful enough for you?

  21. I, too, lament the end of the non-Disney merchandise stores. During our honeymoon in 1981, we purchased an anniversary clock from a shop on the ground floor of the castle. Of course it’s been broken for a number of years, but we still have it. I also purchased a bowl and pitcher from a shop at Magic Kingdom (way in the back of the park) that I still have on my dresser today. And some magnets that I still have on my frig. Why does everything have to be Mickey? Shop at Animal Kingdom Lodge used to have unique items–we’ve got a number of them on our bookshelves at home. But on last trip, most of the stuff I saw was all Mickey-themed. So sad.

And I agree about the character meals at the castle. How about dinner without characters and maybe add alcohol so that it could really be a special dinner at Cinderella’s Table, i.e., romantic anniversary or birthday for an adult? I’ve yet to eat here because of the prices and characters. Such a shame. Thanks!

    Jack’s Comment:

I would love to see alcohol served in the Magic Kingdom table-service restaurants. But I think we’ll see the monorail lines extended before that happens. LOL

  22. Hi Jack, always love your blogs.

If I ruled the world first off, you know that cushiony stuff they have on the ground usually found at DVC info location, I would put that stuff on the floor of the queues for rides that tend to have long lines. You know they put they stuff there because it feel so good to stand on after you’ve been walking and standing all day, and they know you’ll linger long enough for the cast memebers to pitch DVC membership to you. Putting that cushy flooring in queues for rides like Test Track, Soaring, Space Mountian, etc will give your feet a little break. Speaking of Test Track I would get rid of that annoying music that plays while your standing in the queue. Drives me crazy, lol!

My next move would be to reopen the upstairs area of the Imagination Pavillion. Why’d they close that down Jack? I remembered it from my first visit when I was 10yrs old. When I was finally able to go back in 2007 with my own kids, not only was Captain EO gone but so was the Rainbow Tunnel. We’ll I did get to show them Cap. EO this year, but still missing the tunnel.

Also, if I ruled the world I would do something, anything to extend the Backlot Tour. I never got to ride it before it was condensed, so now I feel kinda cheated. Especially when the tram goes through the building and most of the windows are covered with black sheets.

Finally I would remove the Indiana Jones Stunt Show. Don’t get me wrong I love Indy and I love this show, but after you’ve seen it a dozen times well…you know. I would revamp the show to make it a Prince of Persia stunt show. Despite what the gaming community may have thought, I really enjoyed that movie. And yes I have played the video game. It wouldn’t take much to change it to Prince of Persia, wouldn’t have to change the sets much. Just need to hire look alike actors and choreograph a few stunts from the movie. Let it run for a few years then bring back Indy for nostalgia. Then they could be switch out every some odd number of years for variety.

Well that some of the things I would do I if ruled the “World.” I won’t get into my plans for Animal Kingdom. I think we all agree that some attraction need to be added to take the pressure of the Yeti, so we can get him fixed up right. But it has to be something on the caliber of Everest’s intensity to draw the crowds, so the Yeti won’t be missed too bad during it’s long repair period.

    Jack’s Answer:

The upstairs area of the Imagination Pavilion was closed as another way to cut costs.

  23. If I ruled the World, I would make the waiting area for the California Grill in the lobby of the Contemporary rather than up in the restaurant. It’s one of my favorite places to eat, but it can get so loud in there! I think if you waited until your table was ready to go upstairs, there would be less people milling about in the bar/lounge area. Hopefully this would make it a bit quieter!

  24. Thanks, Jack, for a great, thought-provoking blog! If I ruled the world I would definitely bring back the Lights of Winter. How awesome it was to walk under those arches while listening to Christmas (sorry, “Holiday”) music. Another thing would be to bring in a good quality coffee. Not sure why Disney couldn’t partner with a Starbucks or a Dunkin’ Donuts. Seems like either one would be a match made in heaven for both parties.

Keep the blogs coming, I love reading them!

  25. If I ruled the world, I would make it so that the seating area directly across from Aloha Isle in Adventureland is no longer a smoking area. One of the most popular snacks at WDW is the Dole Whip, but the lovely seating area under the trees across from Aloha Isle is a smoking area. No longer can I sit there enjoying my favorite treat in the world without breathing in someone elses horrible smoke. Talk about ruining a good thing. Smoking areas in Disney should be nowhere near any type of seating areas for food distribution of any kind.

  26. My first two ideas might just improve the fiscal bottom line – they involve ways I can spend more money!

First, I agree about breakfast in the parks – and moreover, a better variety of breakfast items, at a few locations. I have some allergies, so I cannot necessarily eat the rank-and-file pastries and egg sandwiches available. Even if there were only one place per park where I could go, that would scratch my itch!

Second, I also agree about the Disney Merchandise Crush. I’ll take it a step further: my house is full of Mickey Memorabilia and I love it, but I would like to see more offerings geared at professional adults. Anyone else remember the nice, simple, elegant clothing that had one very subtle embroidered Mickey on it? I really miss that stuff.

Third, I would love to see just a little more culture in World Showcase, things like wood carving demonstrations in Canada or even a Tai Chi demonstration in China. How about a tea ceremony in Japan? African Outpost had a drumming circle going on for awhile and it was a riot! I think it’s gone, would like to see that back.

(Now – if I had unlimited money, I’d rebuild the Imagination Pavilion from start to finish!)

  27. Jack, both of my comments are food related. I would like a treat known as the “Potato Volcano” to come back to the AK. Does anyone else remember this? Also, at the risk of being called an old fuddy-duddy, your advocating a decrease in the number of character meals is a great idea. Mine is a little more specific, but somewhat related — our favorite resort is WL (we’ve been staying there since 1998). That year, and only then, did we dine at Whispering Canyon. We’re not fans of all the theatrics, but the food is so good. I know there’s an area at the back (Library? – other side of the fireplace) close to the entrance of Artist Point with tables where you could eat, but not have to listen to/participate in all of the activities. CM’s have always refused to seat us there. We wind up eating somewhere else on property, so they don’t lose our $$, but as an “older” couple, we “get” that the “commotion” is there to enhance the theming of WL, but it would be nice to have a sit-down/quiet meal available besides Artist Point (which we love).

    Jack’s Comment:

You and I think alike. I also like Whispering Canyon, but I’m not always in the mood to deal with the theatrics. As for not being allowed to be seated in the quieter “fireplace” room… If Disney isn’t anticipating a busy day, they may only have enough servers scheduled to wait on the main dining room. This often happens at lunch time. This secondary room is only used when the restaurant is busy. It is not realistic to expect a server to wait on one table in this room when the rest of their tables are located in the main dining room. However, if the “fireplace” room is already in use, then you should be allowed to wait for a table there if one isn’t immediately available. If the host or hostess will not accommodate your request, ask to speak with a manager.

  28. Last summer, we stayed in a pirate room at CBR. My two sons loved it. The rooms were cool, but the resort area (South Trinidad) fell flat. Since it is set apart from the rest of CBR, I think Disney should really set it apart by turning the entire area into a pirate (POC) outpost complete with jolly roger flags, maybe a sunken ship wreck in the lake, rename it Tortuga, and have the bus announcement be a warning to all – pirates ahead, exit at your own risk.

  29. I am at WDW now (in fact I saw you, Jack, in the UK taking photos right when they opened yesterday…but I was too shy to say hi!)

I come several times a year, and love the idea of a frequent traveler system like Hilton HHonors, etc. I think Disney knows they have us hooked and don’t really need to reward loyalty, however.

The abuse of scooters has really been evident this trip. I waited in line at Dumbo in the heat for 45 minutes with my daughter, and a man in a rented scooter with his 10 family members rolled up the wheelchair entrance, and was let on the ride immediately. My daughter had asked to go on a pink Dumbo, and apparently this man’s daughter wanted the same. The man leaped out of his scooter, ran to the one remaining pink Dumbo just in front of me, and jumped in….it really was an impressive display of acrobatics…and led me to believe perhaps he didn’t need the scooter after all. The busses are a huge problem re: rented scooters. I have not been on one for the past 2 weeks that didn’t have at least one scooter to load. I think it’s great that Disney has such great systems to take care of everyone’s needs, but I think the reason many people rent scooters is to get this advantage for their entire family (and it makes it hard for people who truly need a scooter in every day life…tarred by the same brush as the abusers). If Disney made access to busses equal for those riding in scooters, and not preferential, I think they would see a dramatic drop in the number of scooters they would have to load in a given day….which certainly would lead to greater efficiency and cost savings. I think the busses should have a little trailer or “pod” where scooters can be loaded at any stage of the bus embarkation process. Scooters would get in the regular line with everyone else, and when the scooter got to the front of the line, the bus driver would take them around to the trailer/pod and load the scooter, and then the person would get on the bus. There would (as now) be courtesy seats, and people sitting there would be expected to give up their seat for a disabled person (and this could be enforced by the bus driver) if the bus was at standing room only. If Disney took away the preferential treatment of scooters and made it equal for everyone, I’m sure we’d see 80% less scooters, and only the people who truly need them would be on the busses. If the “pod/trailer” idea is unworkable, I think only 1 adult companion should be allowed to board the busses with the scooter, and all other members of the party should get in the regular line and meet up at the destination (and this should be strictly enforced). The average party size I have noticed the past 2 weeks is around 15 for 1 scooter.

I also miss unique merchandise. Growing up I collected model horses, and I remember buying one on each trip to WDW/Disneyland.

And shade would be nice for the Pop Century bus stops! Boy does it get hot out there waiting for a bus!

Great work, as always on the blog!!!

  30. Wow! This column sure generated allot of responses! I agree whole heartedly about the merchandise. We used to LOVE the ole leather store in Frontierland. My DH always picked up a new belt or wallet there. It was such a unique experience. I also agree on the generic merchandise that seems to be EVERYWHERE. There is rarely anything unique to find at each park, everything is the same. The last few years I’ve gone to Disney expecting to spend lots of money on souvenirs only to keep my money and come home empty handed. Bring back the unique merchandise! While we’re on the subject, bring back the resort specific refillable mugs too!!!

  31. If I ruled Walt Disney World, I would do one thing… Finish the monorail! Finishing the monorail you say? Yes, finishing the monorail! Right now the monorails go to the MK resorts and MK and EP theme parks. Yes, it would be expensive. Yes, it would take forever to complete but the pay off afterwards would be awesome! Disney is always at the forefront of innovation and imagineering and what better way to demonstrate the feasibility of alternate methods of transportation than by showcasing it at the happiest place on earth? “Most” places on property have at least 2 methods of mobility – whether it be the buses, the water taxis, or the classic two-feet-and-a-heartbeat. What’s one more? (I know, weighted question!) Seriously, how much cooler would it be to travel anywhere in WDW on the monorail? Elevated track would mean little to no vehiclar traffic, hybrid trains could mean less gaseous emissions, more evelated transit would mean less busses required or more emptier busses for high guest volume times of day. While some guests may argue that the “invasion” of the trains to their surrounding resort scenery may feel out of place with the respective theme it would give WDW an added sense of cohesiveness that monorail enthusiasts constantly observe being noticebly absent. The train need not stop at each and every resort. One station could service the All star’s, One the orleans, another the boardwalk, beach/yacht, the swan/dolphin etc… There is enough space there to do it and disney is known for the magical ability to “move” mountains to make room for whatever they can imagine when required. Walt imagined a place where monorails (and peoplemovers) constantly carried people in and out of city hubs. The TTA proves the technology works. I know the ‘rails aren’t operated on the same principle as the WEDway but it elinimates the argument, “It can’t be done, it would never work!” I know central Florida is a swamp – so was the Back bay and the Fens in Boston. If Mass. can fill in the back bay, WDW can fill in more swampland to support the columns. If I ruled WDW, that is the first thing I would do.

  32. Thanks Jack. Had heard about the Hub but was not sure if it was still up and running. One more for you and I promise this will be the last one:

(IF they don’t already) I would like to see all the Buses and Trains that currently run on Diesel to begin using the old fryer grease and oil for fuel. Its not only a cost saving measure but its good for the environment!!! Read somewhere that they were planing on doing this with the Train at Disneyland but I would love to see it utilized property wide!

  33. Hey Jack,

Great Blog subject!!!!! I agree 100% with everything you propose. In regard to your #9: building shade over the seating areas at the theaters I whole heartedly agree. This could easily be accomplished with those fabric sunshades. They are light weight, easily replaceable if damaged, and could even be taken up or down easily. In addition they would be far more cost effective than a roof or permanent structure. Please allow me to add to the list, in addition to yours, if “I ran the world”:

    1. I would extend your shade idea to the bus stops at the Disney All-Star resorts and other bus stops that lack shade. Again I would use the fabric sunshades to accomplish this.

    2. I would add benches lined-up at all the bus stops. Standing 15 min or more for a bus at peak times is simply unacceptable. You are on your feet all day long at WDW. A bus stop should not be one of them. Peoples energy would be much better spent in the shops, increasing revenue. Not being used up standing and waiting for a bus!!!!

    3. I would attract a University to build on property. By doing so you would have a steady stream of College students to pull from for your work force. It would make it far easier to get good people. Students that would be excited to be there and excited to work. I read an article once that suggested that part of Disneyland’s early success was the many Universities in the area that allowed them to easily get and maintain its workforce. That is lacking at WDW.

    4. I would lengthen the time new Cast Members spend in orientation/training. I understand it is now down to less than a day of training and that can CLEARLY be seen. In recent years I ROUTINELY run into CM’s that have No Clue of what is going on. Not only about their own jobs but they lack even the basics in park knowledge or history. It’s sad when I know more than they. I understand new CM training lasted a couple days or as much as a week. I would return to that model. Walt knew that good people were needed to make his dream come true. You can have the perfect attraction but if you have lack good people to operate it its all for nothing. Yes times are tough and everyone needs to cut costs but proper training is an investment, not a cost and that budget should never be cut!!!!!!!!

4.5. In addition to #4 there should be a Hot Line all CM’s can call to get an answer to ANY question they don’t know that any guest might ask AND they should be encourages to use it. A HELP DESK for CM’s if you will. I tire of getting either straight up wrong information, getting told “I don’t know” accompanied with blank stares, or simply getting a blow off answers

    5. I would have built a cul-de-sac at the end of that dead-end road to the right of Main Street where the Piano Lessons are taught and I would have moved Mickey and Minnie’s houses to that location.

    6. I would NOT be building “Golden Oaks”. Remember Celebration? Nuff said!

    7. I would replace the Hamburger and Hot Dog buns with regular white type buns. Those wana-be wheat buns are discussing and if I wanted to eat health I wouldn’t be eating a Hamburger or Hot Dog to begin with.

    8. I would find a better themed solution to the internal transportation at the Fort Wilderness Camp ground. Would love to see the train return but that might be cost prohibitive. The Buses simply distract from the atmosphere. I would also limit the number of Golf carts allowed on the property. They simply destroy the whole theme.

    9. I would open the Adventurer’s club back up. If dinner experiences are the focus then convert it over to a dinner experience! It lends itself well to be converted over to a dining experience. If not just open it back up AS IS. Its greatly missed and now that “Hyperion Wharf” has been put on hold possibly forever it would bring some life back to Pleasure Island.

    10. I would improve the quality of the Pizza available for take out and delivery. Its twice as expensive than any national pizza delivery chain and the quality of the worst frozen pizza on the market. I would rather see Disney contract it out to a national pizza chain than to continue to serve what they are currently calling pizza. We have a saying in our household: “Friends don’t let friends eat Disney Pizza.”

    11. I would build Progress City! (OK I’m just jokin here. Just wanted to see Jacks head explode: )

    12. I would hire Jack Spence as a consultant!

    Jack’s Comment:

    In regards to 4.5…

There is an internal Disney website called The Hub. All CM’s know about it (or at least they’re supposed to know about it). One of its function is to provide information to CMs on any subject about Disney World. Now obviously, someone picking up trash or loading guests onto Splash Mountain can’t access it easily if asked a question. But merchandise and foods people often can access it if necessary. The best place to get difficult questions answered is at Guest Relations in the parks and the Concierge Desk in the hotels

  34. I so agree with the comments about frequent visitors being rewarded with some kind of perk. We have been a Disney family since 1971. Our honeymoon started it all. Since then, we try to return every year. We have celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, family reunions and our daughter was married in the Wedding Pavillion. We are returning in Dec. with family to celebrate our 40th. It would be really special to be granted something..an upgrade or all-day fast pass would be great!!Also, they should include DVC members in the free dining. Our daughter and her family are members and after they have paid a considerable amount of money, they are excluded. Just doesn’t seem right.

  35. Jack,

Another great, thought-provoking pair of blogs. Lot’s of comments, both on-topic (inexpensive changes) and somewhat off-topic (expensive changes). My wish is that Disney executives would read your suggestions, along with the suggestions of your readers, and take them to heart. Could they implement all of this? Probably not! However, as Disney becomes more commercial, there is the real risk of losing too much of Walt’s “magic” that makes Disney resorts and theme parks a cut above other amusement parks. Where I live, I can go to at least five amusement parks that are within an easy drive from my home. My family and I choose Disney because of the “extra magic” that their resorts and theme parks offer, even though it is much more expensive. I fear that this may be lost to commercialization, and that would be a great loss for all of us (including Disney)!

    Neil

  36. Hey thanks for the entre Jack. I’ve only been to the World once but am a huge fan of everything Disney. The one thing I love about Disney is they always have a great villian. This is something I would change if I ruled the World and what I noticed when I was there. Let the villians come out and enjoy the crowed. Everyone gets there pictures with Belle, or Cinderella but how often do we see Malifacent or the Evil Queen, wandering around taking photos with guests. and another thing is to have more villian mechandise. When I went to the World it was close to Halloween and there was hardly any villian merchandise. I was quite depressed that I couldn’t get me a souviner of some of my all time favorite Disney chracters. Let us remember that without these “baddies” Disney movies would not be as good as the are. Thanks again for the blog.

Jack’s Comment. Some of the villians do wander the park, but they are usually the more comical ones like Captain Hook and the Queen of Hearts. We have to remember, little kids are scared to death by some of these evil people. The truly bad villians are usually found in stage shows.

  37. I need to comment on the ECV comments I have been reading. If I were Queen, I agree that I would want a bus for we ECV users too, but I don’t know what busses you are riding, but I have waited for 4 buses to fill up before I could go on. I know it is a pain to have to wait for us to get onto the bus, but you try navigating with a huffy driver and 50 people watching you try to back onto a postage stamp sized ramp. It is no more pleasant for us then it is for you. We didn’t ask to have legs that don’t work very well or to be in pain ALL of the time. Can I walk – sometimes, so if you see me on my pins it doesn’t mean I am scamming the system, I am trying to keep what mobility I have. And I miss walking from ride to ride.

As for getting ahead of the line, that really doesn’t happen anymore. I might get to the rope a bit ahead of you, but they tend to hold us up for awhile.

My other Queenly proclamation is: I would like to have a special place at Epcot for all of we Disneyholics who go to WDW more then once a year to watch Illuminations. You can’t seem to get to any of the really nice viewing areas anymore because they are saved for some group who probably won’t return again.

Sorry for the rant above, but I am hyper ventalating thinking about the buses for my October trip. Try smiling at the person trying to get that contraption into an impossibly small spot.

  38. First, I agree with everyone else about the homogenization of merchandise in the parks. And I remember, as a little kid, saving pennies for use at the Penny Arcade. I’d love to have a more atmospheric Main Street again.
Next, bring back the Fantasmic preshow! Whatever happened to those guys, anyway? My family always had to get to Fantasmic in time for the preshow.
I would love it if they’d bring back the Adventureland Challenge, although I’m not sure what the prize would be now that there are Fastpasses for the busier rides. Knowing Disney, probably a pin. 😉
This is probably out of the scope of the exercise, price-wise, but I’d also like to remove Aladdin’s Flying Carpets and put in a nice garden. That section of Adventureland is just so loud and busy now; I used to enjoy getting breakfast at the Sunshine Tree Terrace and listening to the tropical music at the start of the day.
I also think the Diamond Horseshoe would make a fantastic setting for a Toy Story character meal (and possibly relieve a little congestion at the other character meals; maybe even enough to make one of the other locations have a “character-free” dining option). There could be a small band to serenade guests as the characters make the rounds, or between sets.

  39. First, I would get rid of Finding Nemo: The Musical, and bring back Tarzan Rocks! I loved and was hugely impressed, especially as a child, with Tarzan Rocks!, and having seen Finding Nemo: The Musical, I am significantly less impressed than I was with Tarzan. Plus, The Seas are already Nemo-themed, and Nemo actually belongs in the Seas, while Tarzan has no place anywhere and fits in perfectly in the Theater in the Wild.
Then, I would end the rotating parade at DHS. In all the years I have been going to the World, there has never been a set parade at DHS, just a revolving door of less-than-impressive parades. I would like to see some sort of tribute-to-Hollywood type parade (family-friendly, of course), featuring Hollywood through the years, to modern day, and featuring the great Disney classics.
I would bring back the singing group that was the pre-show at Beauty and the Beast in DHS, because they were awesome and fun to watch.
Finally (though this would probably cost too much), I would expand Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream. Without Walt’s dream, none of the Disney magic would exist, and it is sad to me that all Disney World has to offer to honor Walt is a short show and a little walk-through exhibit. Furthermore, none of the dream would have been possible without Roy Disney. I would expand One Man’s Dream, including a new film that goes more in-depth about Walt and Roy.

  40. Here’s an idea that shouldn’t cost much at all, yet I think would help enhance ‘the magic’.

Have signs or a placque explaining the back stories for the areas with more obscure histories. Something explaining the theming for Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon, DinoLand, Pleasure Island, etc… This would make these areas much more interesting and would enhance the game of “pick out the theming items” many people play. It would also make waiting in line more enjoyable as you could enjoy WHY certain items are there.

Plus, this would cost practically nothing.

  41. Love it when you come back and write these awesome blogs!!

Love all the ideas!!! My daughter used to love going to Polly’s and getting the pickles for a snack and just sitting there and enjoying the quiet there for a bit.
Awesome idea for Morocco – way back when MGM had an Aladdin breakfast it was some of the best character interaction we had.
Really miss the different merchandise from the all the different shops and the resorts.
My big idea that shouldn’t be too expensive would be to bring back the TV channel for the resorts that played all the old cartoons! Really miss lounging in bed at night and watching them. Also, if they could put in a channel for the old World of Disney TV shows.

  42. If I ruled the World, I’d reintroduce the breakfast buffet that used to be at The Top of the World. Growing up we made two visits a year to WDW, and on our departing Sunday morning, we always had breakfast at the Top of the World. It was a wonderful way to say “C ya real soon” to MK before heading home. Its a tradition I wish I could share with my children, and I don’t think it would take TOO much to incorporate this into California Grill. It would also give “informal” families the opportunity to dine where the magic and theming is simply the view, without characters and contrived spaces.

  43. Hi Jack,
I love the ideas. I personally would focus on 1 area. Making Animal Kingdom an “all day park”. So much revenue is lost because of the earlier closing times. They have circumvented this for the most part with extending hours till 8 or 9 during busy seasons. It is understandable that the animals need this downtime, but with there are ways to push these boundaries even more. I envision a “World of Color” type show at Animal Kingdom. The perfect spot is on the river inbetween Everest and the Theater in the Wild. The secluded area away from most animals is why Everest is there. It makes perfect sense and there is plenty of room to build an ampitheater down to the waters edge by Theater in the Wild and have Everest as the backdrop. This would increase revenue and attendance throughout the day.

  44. I’d love to see them get rid of the Big Hat at Hollywood Studios.

Also, I really miss the doll maker at the Germany pavilion at Epcot. Sadly, the man who ran it, Helmut Engel, passed away but I wish they would find a way to bring it back. I would get a doll every trip as my souvenir.

I’d also really like to see them do something with the Millennium Village… maybe a multicultural food court?

    Jack’s Comment:

I too hate the hat at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Actually, that’s not true. I think the hat is very attractive. I just hate where the Imagineers placed it — blocking the Chinese Theater. The hat should be moved to the entrance of the park, where the flag pole currently stands. But this would cost a lot of money and generate on return on the investment. There are rumors that the hat will be moved, but I’m not holding my breath.

  45. If you ruled the world all would be well in the magic of WDW!!!
It is the simple things that I remember and would so love to have come back…..
Aunt Polly’s…….just sitting there and people watching…
Listening to Water Cronkite at SpaceShip Earth …
The pre-movie to the Living Seas……….”And it rained and it rained”…..
More people smiling and believing in the magic……Not rushing around to get Fast Pass for the “ride”

    Jack’s Comment:

I liked the Living Seas movie. However, it had been around for years and years and more and more people were skipping it. What I wish is for Disney release this movie on DVD. That way people like you and me could purchase it an watch it anytime we like.

  46. Regarding Marc’s post and Jack’s subsequent response, I just feel breaking the bank is relative. With the prices Disney charges for both admission and dining (I’m sure they make a ton of money from other sources such as TV networks) they better make some major additions. I’m probably being naive here but short of extending the monorail line across property or building a glass dome to enclose the property, Disney should be able to easily afford many of these suggestions. A major problem too is that the Disney’s decision makers have been making horrible decisions in new attractions over the past ten years. Stitch’s Great Escape, Seas refurb, Mission:Space,Dinoland, and the Spaceship Earth refurb have been flops. In addition, Soarin’ and Toy Story Mania are just overrated “cookie-cutter” attractions and the Everest Yeti is broken. Universal, IMO built superior versions of both attractions over a decade before Disney (Back to the Future was comparable to Soarin’ but innovative, and Men in Black is far superior to Toy Story including theming). Finally, Disney could have built Beastly Kingdom or something similar at AK instead of the Fantasyland refurb which wasn’t really needed.

    Jack’s Comment:

It seems you and I have a difference of opinion. LOL

However, I’m sure both of us can agree on this… Let’s hope that Disney execs, who have to power to implement ideas and change, read my blog and everyone’s suggestions. People have voiced their honest opinions in their comments and Disney need to be aware of how people feel.

  47. Jack-
If I “Ruled the World” I would create an inter-resort transportation system. I do not believe this would be cost prohibitive at all. There is no reason that anyone should have to take a bus from say Port Orleans to one of the parks or Downtown Disney in order to transfer to another bus to get to say Animal Kingdom Lodge and then repeat the process going back. Nor should we be expected to pay for a cab, we spend enough money to stay on property. I believe Disney would recoup any money spent on this new bus route with increased visits to Resort restaurants. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve decided against having a meal at another resort just because of the hassle of getting there and lost time.
I would also love to see some of the resorts designate rooms in a particular wing or building as a child free or quiet area.
A minor pet peeve of mine that is a simple inexpensive fix is the ability to get milk for my tea at the quick service restaurant in my resort without having to ask a cast member for it.

  48. Jack, thanks for posting this list and continuing to blog! I also read through Mike’s Fixit List and think they are great ideas that I hope some Disney exec is reading.

If I could fix a few inexpensive things, I would suggest that the in-park breakfast meals offer a “non-character” section for those of us without kids or the need to hug a character. I love dining in the park before it is open (just amazing to be almost all alone on main street walking to breakfast), but I don’t like dining with characters. I completely agree with your suggestion to offer character-less meals at the castle. I would love to go there for a magical dinner or lunch without them.

I also wish Disney had some sort of Points method like most hotel companies. That way you could earn extra stays, perks with dining etc. I’d probably return more often if I got something extra for doing it or discounts to visit the other resorts (Aulani? Disneyland Paris?).

I’d love it if Disney could update some of the quick service restaurants. There are some great fast food places they could take cues from like Noodles, Chipotle/Qdoba etc. Add some variety and healthy options to the plates. My husband has celiacs and we wish we could have some of the options we can get at home, although Disney has made great stides for those with dietary restrictions.

Also agreed on the need for good coffee and appetizer on the dining plan from the other posts.

PS I miss the magic shop on main street, although we spent a bunch in the movie memoriabilia shop in HS – what a find and so unique!

  49. Hey Jack,

While I completely agree with everything that you’ve mentioned, what I find most depressing is the impact the “real” world has on WDW. It seems that back in the day of Walt & Roy, the first priority was “magic.” From all the documentaries I’ve seen about the Disney Company, when Walt had a “dream” he was kind of like Captain Picard on Star Trek. He would turn to Roy and say, “Make it so.” Walt also seemed to operate by the seat of his pants, sometimes on the edge of bankruptcy. “Magic was the first priority, money, the second.

Those were to good old days, before the age in instant gratification and people expecting to make a quick buck from the stock market. All of the changes in our society since the 1960s have demanded larger profit margins and larger returns on stocks. I’m sure this drives all the decisions at WDW today.

As a result of this, the “magic” has suffered at WDW. This is what has brought homogenized merchandizing, where dollar per square foot has become the driving force. I am so encouraged reading all of the responses to your blog, how much people really hate the loss of the more unique, although perhaps less profitable shopping experiences, especially at Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Along with the changes to merchandizing, I miss the Skyway as well as the boat ride around Discovery Island at Animal Kingdom. That one didn’t seem to last very long, and I only cruised on it once. By the time I visited WDW the first time in 1988, the Swan Boats were long gone. I remember seeing pictures of them, and thinking that they looked so cool. Another one of those “slow down and smell the roses” experiences.

There are many things that I understand “intellectually” but still very much miss emotionally. My favorite attractions at Epcot’s Future World were Horizons and the original Journey Into Imagination. I also enjoyed the World of Motion. I do enjoy Test Track, but it’s sometimes a shame that they feel the need to tear down before adding. It seems that they could push back some of the “backstage” areas to expand the guest area with new attractions while leaving the old.

Sometimes I think Walt would be mortified if he could see the cost of just parking, let alone the prices for admission and food. As a local, I couldn’t afford “the magic” if I didn’t have an annual pass. For many families throughout the country, a trip to WDW is something that is financed, and that is very sad, but that also goes back to the changes in the “real” world since the 1960s.

  50. Jack,
I definitely agree with your suggestions. I feel as if much of the “magic” has been lost over the years. One thing I would like to see back at the parks is the original Journey into Imagination. There was just something about that ride that really captured the spirit of Epcot. (or I guess EPCOT to be technical). The current show, although an improvement over the last update, seems to be missing the spark of the original – no pun intended.

  51. I would bring back the resort specific themed refillable travel mugs. It may seem silly, but we were really disappointed when we stayed at the WL and got a generic Mickey mug instead of the handsome WL mug we had received in the past. It’s a souvenir of the resort you stayed at which when you bring home reminds you of that wonderful visit.

  52. Jack,

I feel some of your readers have missed a major point in your “If I Ruled the World” blogs.

In the first of these two blogs, you said your suggestions would be “simple and somewhat inexpensive.” You ended this second blog asking for reader comments, but saying “remember to be somewhat practical.”

Some of your readers certainly seemed to miss that point, with suggestions of rebuilding major attractions that have been removed. Maybe reopening Wonders of Life is possible without too much expense, but rebuilding Horizons or 20,000 Leagues would cost a fortune. Not to say I don’t miss those attractions, but they don’t seem to fit into this blog topic.

People have even suggested extending the monorail although you specifically excluded it from this discussion.

Do you find it frustrating? I do.

    Marc

    Jack’s Comment:

I’ve received some fantastic suggestions. My favorite was to bring back the Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Sandwich. This was simple and inexpensive. But I have to admit, I have been disappointed by some of the other ideas. Many would cost multi-millions of dollars to implement. That was never my intent when asking for suggestions. I was looking for simple, low-cost ideas (in the scheme of things). I believe the most expensive of my suggestions was to build roofs over a couple of venues. I like to believe that these could have been done for less than a million each.

  53. bring back christmas show @ country bear jamberee , festival of fights @ epcot & my beloved BRITISH INVASION miss them so much. daily instead of weekend concerts during flower & garden show. bring back taco salads to p.o. french quarter as well as chicken wraps.i will sttop here thank you jack !!!

  54. Jack,

Another great entry. These are all great suggestions. I too, dislike the homogenized merchandise the “One Disney” initiative has produced. I especially don’t like the Disney Parks labeling. I’d like a shirt from each resort we stay at, not just a generic Walt Disney World one. I’m sure some bean counter got a big bonus for saving money, but it’s pretty lame.

As far as what I’d like to do, first, I’d update the monorails they have at WDW and then build more. I’d love to be able to go to and from each park only on a monorail. And I’d get rid of so many meet and greet locations. As a kid going to Magic Kingdom (when that’s the only park there was), I loved just bumping into characters as they wandered around. I’d also like to see some stuff at the resorts (shops, restaurants, lounges) stay open later. Even though there’s lots to do, not all of us go to sleep at 10 or 11, especially if we’ve napped in the afternoon.

    Thanks again, Jack.

    Jack’s Commemnt:

In the “olden days” the characters wandered around the park and you could “bump” into them. But several reasons necessitated a change. First and foremost, safety. Kids AND ADULTS thought it was fun to kick, trip, and abuse the characters. As the characters became more and more popular, it was realized that some sort of a “system” needed to be devised so the characters could greet everyone in a timely, and SAFE manner. In case you haven’t noticed, there is always another “plain clothes” cast member (besides a photographer) keeping an eye on everything. People still think it’s great sport to abuse the characters. Sad, but true.

  55. I would LOVE to see the Tapestry of Nations parade return to Epcot. The music was excellent and the floats were great, especially the ones with the drummers.

I would also love to see the return of the Hunchback show at the Studios. What a charming show that was! Maybe they could have a theater with a rotating set of shows.

And we have always wondered why Disney doesn’t have a theater that shows classic Disney movies – not shorts or clips, but full-length movies. Can you imagine taking your kids to see Cinderella or Mary Poppins on the big screen? The theater could be at one of the parks or at Downtown Disney. I’d much rather spend money to watch a classic Disney movie than some of the other pictures out there!

  56. Again, totally agree with your suggestions. I definitely agree with the merchandise issue. It is disappointing to not have a variety of unique items to choose from. Some things I would look at changing would be updating some of the current attractions. The Nemo ride at Epcot really needs to be improved. Rafiki’s planet watch needs to be added on to and have more animals added to the petting zoo area. Animal Kingdom desperately needs some new rides added. I would love to see a roller coaster, somewhere, themed after the Polar Express movie and the runaway train part. I know that you have Expedition Everest but it could be totally different themeing. Also, either a new resort on the monorail loop or somehow incorporate all deluxe resorts on the monorail loop. Some of these changes would be great!

  57. Wonderful ideas. I totally agree with Pocahontas show. However, I thought of this once they closed it, that if they can’t bring the show back, use the empty area as a Pocahontas-forest-themed play area for children and adults. For example, interactive things like they have in the que of the Haunted Mansion and Winnie the Pooh (which you do see parents playing with).
Plus, I would re-open Body Wars, that was always my favorite as a child.

Great idea for ruling the ‘World’. 😉

  58. I have to agree with the reopening of the wonders of life pavillion into something (I miss Cranium Command) and my husband chimes in on the better coffee idea. I also miss the Walter Cronkite/Robin Williams movie at the animation exhibit at the studios.

Thanks for the great blog, Jack.

  59. If I ruled “The World” I would bring back more characters!! The “de-charecterizing” of World Showcase back in 2009 was a very sad time for me 🙁 The Genie is one of my all time favorite characters and to see him gone, along with Dopey and Mushu was a bummer.
Flynn Rider was also removed recently from the Tangled Play and Greet, and that was a bummer. On my last trip to Disneyland I spent over an hour & a half in line to make sure that I saw Flynn Rider in case they removed him from Disneyland also (I should add that I’m 21 and generally travel alone or with friends my age).
The amazing Disney characters are one of the only things where the experience changes every time you go, unlike rides that are the same every time you go. Some of my favorite Disney memories are those amazing moments with characters.

  60. My husband and I used to buy Simba’s Paw ice cream bars at the Animal Kingdom, and then go and watch Tarzan Rocks! I’d bring both of those back. Tarzan Rocks was a great show…high energy, fun music and a live band! Finding Nemo is cute, but it’s not a show I’d see more than once.

  61. The one thing that I would like to see, in addition to what you have mentioned, is a tram that will hold strollers without having to collapse them. Other parks have these, and it eliminates the need for the tram (and everyone on it) to wait while kids and a truckload of bags are unloaded from a stroller, loaded on the tram then unloaded on the other end. It would be nicer than watching the parents try to hold in place all the “unloaded” stuff, a folded stroller and the kids while the tram is whipping through the parking lots.

  62. 1) Sell pineapple dole whip in more than one location in the Magic Kingdom. The lines get long, I’ve waited half an hour for one (I really love the stuff) and it clogs up the whole corner with people looking for somewhere to sit and eat. I can only imagine it’s got worse with the princess meet and greet moving into that area.
    2) Put the simple ground level water features that children like to play in (know as squirties in our family)into every park. My daughter loves the one in Epcot, it’s a perfect place for her to let off steam and for us to take a break. If they put a few covered tables and benches around the edges for parents to sit on and a iced coffee and pastry stall nearby Disney could most likely recoup the cost of building them in a few short months.

  63. Thanks, Jack, for your thoughtful and well-written columns! Several possibilities occurred to me in response to your “If I Ruled the World” piece, but I’ll name just a few of them here (limited to Magic Kingdom items). In no particular order:

    * To me, Tomorrowland seems in desperate need of some re-theming. I would start with a makeover of the Speedway in the form of a tie-in with the Cars movies. (I think another reader already mentioned this.) It makes perfect sense, and could be both an enhanced draw to an old ride and a great merchandising move!

    * Sticking with Tomorrowland, I can’t believe Imagineers have not yet found a way to bring WALL-E to life here! (The movie won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, after all!) I would ditch the Stitch attraction — doubt that it would be missed by many folks! — in favor of a WALL-E themed ride that simulates the scene in which he is floating in space with only a fire extinguisher to propel himself. Not to be too similar to the Space Mountain experience, what I envision is a slower ride with individual harnesses that suspend the guest and allow a free-floating sensation. But, as you say, I’ll leave the specifics to those with the knowhow.

(* TRON would be another great movie tie-in to feature a Tomorrowland theme, but I don’t have an idea for a specific attraction…)

    * There’s GOT to be some way of making Up! a part of the scene, too. Maybe a tethered balloon lift? (If only the Skyway were still in operation, each car could be re-themed as a bunch of floating balloons.) Though it may not fit the theme of exotic & far-off lands, I would vote to house it in Adventureland as a nod to the movie’s motto, “Adventure’s out there!”

    * Harking back to the early years of MK, I would bring back a slower-paced and water-based ride similar to the Swan Boats. Not everyone favors the more thrill-based attractions, and this would provide an option for the younger kiddies who need a respite from their immersion in sensory overload, as well as for the senior set who would like to experience things from a distance & at a more leisurely pace. Also, as a way to get from Point A to Point B, it would offer an alternative to all the sweaty elbows!

    * Good quality coffee! (How hard can it be to get a contract with a decent brewer to vend in the parks?)

    * Finally, speaking of food, I think Disney brass is missing some good opportunities for culinary movie tie-ins. To wit:
    — How about a Ratatouille-style French option? (Maybe too similar to the imminent Fantasyland eatery?)
    — Or a kiosk in Tomorrowland featuring protein shakes? (There’s the WALL-E connection again!)
    — Apples – candied, not poisoned – near Snow White’s location.
    — The list could go on…

OK, enough for now. Thanks for the opportunity to share.

  64. Hi Jack –

Thanks for another great article! I’d say the point I most agree with is that I’d love to see the merchandise become a little less redundant as well. Even though I’m a huge fan of all the Disney park merchandise, I’d love to see some different stuff every once in a while!

As for what I’d change if I ruled the world, I would definitely like to see character greeting return to how they were the when I visited the World up until about 2003. I remember back in these days that character sightings were more sporadic. I remember it wasn’t unusual to see characters in more diverse locations, and there was also a greater variety of characters available for photos and autographs! I never waited in any lines comparable to what’s seen in the parks today (like 2 hours to see Flynn and Rapunzel…). Of course, there are many other things I’d do with unlimited resources, but within the boundaries set for this article, I’d say that’s my biggest change.

  65. I love it! You’re list is amazing.

What I might add if I ruled the World is brining back to boat to the Norway Pavilion. It was charming and now it’s gone. Boo!

    Jack’s Comment:

The playground-boat was removed from Norway for safety reasons. Kids were getting hurt on it and it was decided to just remove to altogether.

  66. If I ruled the world…..

    1. have less of those “I have been to Disney World” tourist T’s and bring back those fashionable woman’s tops.

    2. serve better bacon. 10+ years ago, disney used to have better bacon. Now it is that paper thin stuff…yuck!

    3. Do something more with Ariel’s at BC.

    4. less pin trading stores.

  67. Hi Jack! I loved reading this blog because I have often thought of my own ways to improve the World on my many visits!

1)Bring back Pleasure Island! I think it all went downhill when they stopped charging people one flat rate to get on the island and all the clubs. When the teenagers start hanging out in the streets, it turns away the customers. Reopen the clubs (especially the Adventurer’s Club) and require paid admission to get onto the island! There is not nearly enough to do on property at night and there’s only so much shopping one can take (especially when all the merchandise is the same!).

2)I agree with the previous posts about having a Toy Story Character meal somewhere. Families with little boys would greatly appreciate something geared towards them.

3)The Wonders of Life Pavilion should definitely be reopened as more than just a seminar area during the Food and Wine Festival. I LOVED Body Wars and am sad each time I walk past and see the closed sign.

4)Bring back the strawberry and vanilla swirl ice cream at the Enchanted Grove.

5)They should consider bringing back the Christmas show at the Country Bears Jamboree. I enjoyed it much more than the regular show and was sad when it was taken out. In addition, I miss Mickey’s ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas Show.

6)Mickey Mouse soft pretzels! They have them in Disneyland- why not Disney World? For that matter- Disneyland is much better at having food themed to the areas. Mickey Mouse beignets in New Orleans Square, Tigger Tails near the Winnie the Pooh ride, the skewers at Bengal Barbecue in Adventureland. Disney World is becoming all about the chicken nuggets, fries, and chocolate cake- they need to take some clues from their DINING PLAN-LESS sibling out west!

7)This may be just my personal preference… but I wish they would redo Buzz Lightyear and make it more like the Astro Blasters in California! So much easier to aim when the gun isn’t stationary!

  68. Hello Jack! I haven’t checked AllEars for a while and what a nice surprise to find a new blog from you here!! I agree on so many of the points you made…we love to shop at the various stores when we are in the World, and I agree that more variety would be nice. I would love to eat at Aunt Polly’s and relax by the river. More rides and attractions at the already wonderful Animal Kingdom would be great! I completely agree with you about the FastPass kiosks you mentioned, however, I don’t think they will do anything about ‘Soarin (you were right-they need to draw people into the building…)
Wouldn’t it be fun to wander the parks and resorts with Imagineers and tick things off one’s own personal checklist 🙂

  69. I remember when there was different characters at each character meal. Pocahontas and friends were at WL, Backstage had alot of different characters. Now it seems like it’s all princesses, Mickey & friends, or Pooh characters. I agree we need something for the little guys. A Pirate meal would be nice, Toy Story breakfast. I really enjoy Lilo and Stitch at the Poly. It would be nice to be able to go to a restaurant without a reservation. I’m a DVC member and now they are offering free dining during our low point season. Which means the parks and restaurant are crowded. I do wish they would bring back some of the rides that were there when the park opened. I do wish that they would really inforce the no smoking in the parks. Or better yet have the adults obey the rules. I remember how nice everyone was to each other on my first trip. Everyone seem to think of each other not of themselves. After all were are here to have fun, not shove, push or fight with strangers to make friends and memories. I know Disney can’t do anything about that but maybe we adults can. Remember the golden rule “do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Be kind!

  70. Jack, it is so wonderful to have you back! I was genuinely sad when you announced your intention to leave.

Regarding all these changes… Jack’s suggestions and everyone else’s. Here are my thoughts:

I LOVE the idea of repeat visitor incentive. It makes completely sense to reward your loyal customers. I feel chick-fil-a also needs a returning customer incentive, but that’s for another blog… 😉

Putting an Aladdin themed character meal in Morocco is GENIUS!! Aladdin happens to be my favorite Disney movie, so I am especially excited at the thought of this. I hope someone important is reading this and puts this into motion! On the other side of the coin, though, I do agree that CRT, CP, and Akershus should remove the lunch character meal. I’d LOVE to go to CRT someday, but right now it doesn’t seem worth it with the extra cost and characters. I do enjoy an OCCASIONAL character meal, but it really limits my choices sometimes.

I wholeheartedly agree that the ECV transporation could use a tweak. Whether it just be allowing only one or two family members (rather than a party of 10) ride along with them or their very own bus.

And lastly, I’d like to comment on the suggestion of an ADR surcharge or limiting one ADR per 3 nights of stay. I have to say I passionately disagree with that suggestion. I am a planner by nature and don’t feel that I should be punished with a surcharge for doing so. To me, part of the excitement is planning which restaurants I’m going to try this time. And I have no problem planning to be at a certain park because of an ADR.

Now the one thing I can think of that I would bring back is the BUTTER-GRILLED POUND CAKE from Liberty Tree Tavern!!! I had it about 4 years ago and have dreamed of it ever since. I do realize the menus change often, and that’s fine. But selfishly, oh how I wish that was a staple on the menu!

  71. I think you read my mind! I agree with so much of this! Especially the character meals. I used to love eating in Cinderella’s castle, but haven’t been there in years since they made the change. The one thing you left out was bringing back breakfast at Boatrights in the Riverside resort. I so miss their french toast!!!

  72. Hi Jack

Pocahontas and her Forest Friends was a charming little show with (you are right), not enough seating. I miss it. Yes, they should bring it back for the message it gives out.

Doug B buy your park tickets from a UK outlet as we have 7, 14 and 21 day tickets available.

I would love WDW to bring back the length of stay Key to the World for UK and US visitors. It makes so much more sense. We arrive mid afternoon on our flights and leave in the evening.

So many things to tweak that would make lots of people happy….

Thank you for another fabulous blog 🙂

  73. I would like the parks to switch back to just plain lemonade. They in recent years have gone to a pomegranite lemonade which is distasteful.

  74. I have to say, after reading the comments about Main Street, I am concerned that someday we will see a Dollar store type store on Main Street. Yuck! Not something that fits on Main Street USA. Ruins the ambience.
I would say regarding the buses, only allow 1 other family member go with the person in the ECV or wheelchair. The person should not travel alone. Also, in order for these people to get one of these, they need a letter from their doctor. But unfortunately, some doctors will give a note just because they asked.
Regarding this, suppose the guest with special needs, calls a special number for a driver to pick them up. I did this in NYC when I took my mom to the Christmas show. We took the ferry to NYC from NJ and a handicap bus took us to our destination.
Also, if I were in charge, a Tinkerbell & friends meal. And bring back the villains dining.
Put a hot tub in the Polynesian main pool. This is what is keeping me from going back. Plus not as convenient as Contemporary.
This next one is big-Bring back lights of winter!
And regarding the show by the tree lighting in EPCOT, bring back where the Santa’s of the countries are introduced.
I agree, an Aladdin Character Meal should be added to Morocco. I cannot believe this was not put in place before.
How about replacing the Nemo show in AK with the Aladdin Show from Disney CAlifornia Adventure.
And yes, Dinorama has to go. It is extinct. haha
But I still love my Disney World..like our loved one’s, got their faults but love them anyway.

  75. I agree with all these suggestions I’ve read, especially having merchandise that is unique to the various stores/lands/resorts.

My suggestion is for complimentary cab fare for when you are staying at one Disney resort, but have dining reservations at another. Going from a value resort to a luxury resort for a nice dinner is a hassle when you have to take 2 busses to get there, and cab fare can add up quickly. How about waiving the fare when the concierge can verify that you have reservations someplace?

So happy to be reading your wonderful blogs again!

  76. I TOTALLY agree about the merchandise and the stores. The same stuff everywhere! It used to be fun to shop in Disney but now once you’ve been in one you’ve been in them all. You used to could buy Davy Crockett hats in Frontierland and distinct items for each land, but now, all you find is pins princesses and more pins. Reduce the emporium and bring back the penny arcade and the old charm of Main Street!! Oh, and Horizons, can’t forget Horizons. I would ride that over and over as a kid. I’ve been on Mission: Space once and I don’t really care to return (I think that perhaps I may have a ‘little bit’ of resentment about it taking the place of my favorite ride, hehe). Disney has really lost a lot of its charm and it makes me so sad 🙁

  77. First of all, it’s so exciting to read another one of you great blogs!!

    Here’s my list:

Hollywood Studios–Replace Indy Stunt Spectacular with the Indy ride like Temple of Peril or bring the backlot back and a Who Framed Roger Rabbit ride.

Animal Kingdom–Restore the river boats with in a new environmental-friendly way. Fix the YETI for goodness sake!

Magic Kingdom–Bring back the Skylifts a.k.a instead of buckets make them Flying Model T’s from The Absent Minded Professor. We don’t need a new restroom for Peter Pan. Take away the Village Haus and make it a Pinocchio dark ride.

Epcot–Bring back Dreamfinder end of story. 🙂

  78. If I ruled the world, I’d construct the interior “arcade”/”corridors” which would run behind the shops lining main street (like in Disneyland Paris). What a help they’d be when exhausted parents with sleeping kiddos need to exit the park after a long day and the streets are crowded with parade goers.

  79. Jack:

Great job and thank you for the opportunity to express an opinion on your blog. Hopefully a Disney exec will receive this input.

First, you are dead on with your observation on character meals.

Also, I may be saying the same thing as #7a, but why do all of the stores have to offer the same limited choices of merchandise? It has become so homogenized and quite frankly the quality of so much of it poor. I used to be able to find some nice quality merchandise there, particularly at EPCOT, but it is disappearing rapidly. I’m sure that there is still a demand for merchandise that will last longer than the trip home.

    Now, if I were king:

    1. I would reopen the Adventureland Veranda. Disney has steadily reduced the variety of counter service foods offered in all of the parks. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the Magic Kingdom. I’m sure this has been done as a cost saving measure, but it is spoiling the experience. Disney could offset at least part of the cost of offering greater variety by reducing portion sizes a bit.

    2. I would offer an appetizer option for the dining plans.

    3. Expand available ticket packages past 10 days, at least to 14 days.

    4. Open one or more “seasonal” dining location(s) to compensate for locations closed for rehab.

    5. I would make access and priority the same for people in ECV’s (Scooters) and those on foot, instead of giving ECV users priority over everyone else. Too many people are now gaming the system by renting the ECV’s just for the convenience of skipping lines. Nowhere is this more egregious than with the bus transportation. In no way am I suggesting discriminating against or inconveniencing the disabled. However, when you see groups running around and swapping riders on an ECV, then later in the day see the same group (the entire group) boarding a bus ahead of a huge line just because they have an ECV, it makes your blood boil. At closing time I’ve stood in line 45 minutes plus for a bus, only to have someone roll up in a scooter at the last second and take most of a bus ahead of everyone else with their entourage. Surely Disney with all of their talent can come up with a solution.

7 Days and counting till we arrive at WDW.

  80. First of all Jack, so so glad whenever you do a blog. I can’t recall one I haven’t read!!

    1) I agree on the Disney merchandise needs diversification. Some of my favorite items are the ones that are harder to find. I’m also not a fan of items with the year on it or the ones with the big emblem across it. But that is more of a style preference.

    2) I wish the Deluxe food courts had a better food selection. I understand they have more TS restaurants, but I would really like more hot options for breakfast. I did hear the WL now also has waffles, which I am excited about.

    3) I also love the idea of an incentive program for repeat visitors.

  81. I have to say that many of the items listed (Penny Arcade, Magic Shop, canoes, better loading systems) are available at Disneyland. Maybe I’m biased because I was an AP holder there for many years. But I feel like DL has been able to withstand all of the ‘must make more room for merchandise’ mania that seems to plague WDW, especially MK.

Love your suggestions Jack. My favorite would have to be the Character Dining removal at lunch. Or at least change it up. Not all of us want a high decibel meal with awkward character interactions.

  82. I Loved the old House of Magic!!! Bought invisable dog leash, Foam Rocks, Mask etc. Spent lots of time there looking.

Thought it was to be Old town USA now it is any tourist town usa. Sad there is plenty of stores all over so limiting them here would be fine. Miss seeing the Horse drawn carriage and Double decker buses.

    Miss the original Citrus Swirls

Was at Quest the other day and no more Quest items all Stuff Mickeys etc. Need more unique shops.

Remember when you had to go to Spaceship Earth to make your Epcot reses. Wow that was a pain. Running to get there ASAP and then waiting in line Just to make your Lunch And Dinner plans.

Wish they would redo the Fast pass system, not working anymore. If you don’t get there first thing in the am you are almost always out of lunck thill late that night.

  83. hey jack
Once again you hit the nail on the head. Along with what you said, I would include bringing back 20,000 leagues under the sea. After watching old movies that had that attraction i thought it was very cool and would love to see it again. can’t wait for your next blog and as always keep up the great work.

  84. Everyone seems to have a lot of great ideas. I hope that some of these things really do happen.

My only issue that I think needs to be fixed is a problem that I had while visiting a couple years ago. Hopefully they have fixed it by now, but in 2009 the Swan and Dolphin, Beach Club, Yacht Club, and I think the Boardwalk resort as well all shared the same bus line to get to and from the parks. It took a long time to get to the parks and back with all these extra stops at the different resorts. The buses for these resorts would also fill up faster than others because more resort stops means more people.

On the day we had to fly home we spent the morning at Blizzard Beach since we had an evening flight out. We left the park with plenty of time to get back to the hotel, shower, and change before going to the airport. We ended up waiting at the bus stop outside Blizzard Beach for almost two hours before a bus even showed up. We asked for help from the other resort buses that came to pick up their guests, but all they could tell us was that our buses kept filling up at Animal Kingdom first, so they were not able to stop at Blizzard Beach to pick us up and take us to the hotel.

Its been a couple years so hopefully they’ve caught onto this and taken care of it since its such a quick fix.

  85. Resort discounts sound like a good idea for those who don’t like the plans. I would say offer a choice between the plan and a discount. I’m planning a trip, and because I’m not a heavy eater, the plan seemed like a lot of wasted food to me. I’m going to do mainly quick-service meals. However, with a discount, I’d be more likely to do the pricier restaurants, which means more on the bottom line, even with a discount.

Or, for families with teens – add an option for a daily spending limit on the cards. Parents can set a daily spending limit for their children, and then let them go shopping or dining as they choose, knowing the kids will have some spending freedom, but not go over budget. And if it could be easily programmed, specify a daily budget for food ONLY, so you know the kids will eat, rather than spend all their money on souvenirs. Once, my teenaged sister spent all her food money on other stuff, and was really looking forward to the time we’d meet up for dinner. She had no lunch. A pre-programmed budget for lunch and dinner (or whatever the parents decide) and a bit for souvenir, the amount decided by the parents, would allow them to send their teenagers off for some freedom, while ensuring they will eat well.

I suppose there would be some serious up-front programming expenses, but once it’s in place, it should be easy enough for resort guests to be able to program in their daily budgets. Actually, it would be good for adults, as well as teens and children, because we all know how easy it is to go over budget when you’re using a Key to the Kingdom. Peace of mind, financially, would make for one heck of a magical moment. And if you decide you just HAVE to have that particular item, you either use an alternate means of payment, such as a credit card or cash, or else you go to your resort (or perhaps a kiosk near the park entrance) and manually adjust your budget for the day. Either way, you’re making an informed decision about your budget. This saves you money overall, but also makes you more willing to spend freely within that set budget, because you know you won’t go over.

  86. If I ruled the world I would bring back breakfast at Tony’s in the MK. We always made it a tradition to have breakfast here at least once on every trip. It was so nice to be able to order of a menu for breakfast. I would also bring back French Toast Loaf from the Main st. Bakery.

  87. I don’t usually comment twice, but I really agree with DizneyFan42. What a great idea, to have an incentive program for repeat customers. I cannot afford to go every year so I probably would not be eligible; however, it would give me an incentive to TRY to get there are often as I could. GREAT idea…I hope that Disney executives read these blogs. Everyone has such fantastic ideas!!!

  88. Any chance there’s an Imagineer or Disney VIP reading this blog? One can only hope.

OK, I think my previous post got bumped, so here are my ideas.

First of all, I second your posted ideas. Aladdin should have a character meal in Morocco, and I’d like to have lunch at any of those restaurants you mentioned.

Second – ideas for the use of Odyssey and Wonders of Life:

Make Odyssey a vegan restaurant (while vegans can’t eat everything, everyone can eat vegan), and Wonders of Life can be used to teach about healthy living, including having a large, all-weather area where young children can learn to play active games like Tag and Red Rover that are great exercise, and good fun, but have, for some bizarre reason, been banned from public schools. Maybe even have brief (15-20 minute) cardio classes. Keep it moderate so you don’t end up a sweaty mess, but enough to get the blood pumping and energize you for the rest of your day.

Another idea – use empty buildings for sleep cubicles. Use a coin-operated system. For a quarter, you get 15 minutes of naptime in a dark cube on a comfy cot. You can put in up to 4 quarters at a time. When your time is up, the cubicle’s light comes on and an alarm sounds, loud enough to wake you, but quiet enough not to disturb the neighbors. A Cast Member would do a sweep between patrons, to swap out paper pillow cases, and blankets. $1 an hour seems cheap to customers, but it will really add up to Disney, and it won’t take much in maintenance. A couple of cast members, a supply of paper pillow cases, and laundry facilities in back for the blankets. This would make for refreshed patrons, who are happy that they didn’t have to drive all the way back to their hotels and risk not being able to get back into the parks, if it’s a peak period. Also, those who rely on Disney transportation to go back to their hotels don’t have to worry about missing an hour due to travel time alone. And those families with cranky toddlers and energetic older children can split up, letting the older children keep going while the toddlers get a good nap.

Finally – I vote for more niched products in niched stores. If you can’t have non-Disney items, then at least give us niched Disney items. Ghostly Mickey stuff near Haunted Mansion (in what used to be a magic shop). Mickey in colonial garb in Liberty Square, in what used to be a perfume shop. Minnie and Daisy in turn-of-the-century clothes in Main Street. Give us something we can’t get anywhere else, and we’ll buy more of it.

  89. Definitely bring back the niche shops. Like the magic shop near the Haunted Mansion, and the perfume shop in Liberty Square. Even if the niche shops sell Disney merchandise, make it niched Disney merchandise.

Ghostly fare near Haunted Mansion. Mickey in colonial garb in Liberty Square. Variety is the spice of life, and will certainly boost sales, because people know they can only get it HERE.

Also, bring back the swan boats, the canoes, and the keel boats, yes.

I also agree on the character meals. Some of us want to just dine at those restaurants, and Morocco could certainly host an Aladdin character meal.

Wonders of Life and the Odyssey – maybe combine them into a themed “Living Well” area. The Odyssey could be geared towards healthy and tasteful fare. Maybe an all-vegan menu. Everyone can eat vegan, while vegans can’t eat everything. If it works for Babycakes, why not Odyssey? And the Wonders of Life could be filled with all sorts of educational stuff. Kids these days don’t know how to eat right, and think that exercise has to be boring and painful. Teach them how to play actively, with or without gear. Heck, have a “Red Rover” field or a “Tag” arena. Did you know these games are banned at many public schools? Tag, especially, is GREAT exercise and requires nothing but playmates. And using that building as an all-weather active play area would make good use of it, I think.

Another alternate use for any unused building in the parks – nap cubicles. For those people who can’t get back to their hotel, or for those days when crowds mean they would not be guaranteed re-entry, a place to have a good nap would be FANTASTIC. In order to make this financially viable, I would say have coin-operated system. For a quarter, you get a quarter of an hour in a dark cube, with a comfy cot. You can put in up to 4 quarters at a time. When your time runs out, the lights come on, and an alarm rings – loudly enough to wake you, but not enough to wake neighbors. Have a CM do a quick sweep between guests, replacing the paper pillow case and swapping the blanket.

For $1 an hour, many people would find it both beneficial and cost-effective to pay for a nap cubicle. And you can fit an awful lot of those cubicles into a building, if you plan it right.

Candidates for nap-cubicles include the Odyssey, Wonders of Life, that Emporium Expansion, and some of those extra and unneeded Disney Merchandise shops.

Even if you have to build a new building in Animal Kingdom or Hollywood Studios, I think it would recoup the cost really quickly. There are oodles of tired guests, and those quarters would add up really fast.

  90. I agree with you on just about all your suggestions. The one I wanted to comment on is regarding the merchandising. One of the more irritating things Disney has done is the branding of items as “Disney Parks”. I’m not vacationing at Disney Parks. I’m vacationing at Walt Disney World and would appreciate merchandise that reflects that special event.

As a shopper and a fan, I too miss the diversity of product in the parks. It was so much more fun to shop back then! But I will say that as a parent, I’ve used the homogenization of WDW’s stores and products to my own advantage — as in telling my kids “let’s not buy this here, we’ll get it on the way out”. Meanwhile, the kids have moved on or forgotten the item by days end and I’ve kept some vacation money in my pocketbook. I’m pretty sure that’s NOT what Disney intended but it works for me.

  91. Hi Jack,
I would ditch the dining plan and offer room/resort discounts instead during the off- peak seasons. More unique menu items and less talk of dining credits would be a welcomed change. Dining reservations are hard to come by and my vacation itineraries are starting to look like mahjong tiles.

I guess I’ve become somewhat jaded, but I miss the specialness of going out to dinner at WDW. I find myself not ordering a fun appetizer b/c it’s not included on the plan, but instead eating yet another pre-made carrot or chocolate cake…HA! Save us from the dining plan doldrums!

  92. I love all of your suggestions, especially the Magic Shop. I bought an invisible dog on leash from there when I was five.

One idea that I’ve had for years is unfortunately, not so simple and could spell disaster for the line queues is this: update Soarin’. Not a major overhaul, but a tweak. What if instead of the same film everytime there was three or four alternatives? And they were completely random, so guests never knew what to expect? While flying over California is fantastic, what if the next time you rode you were over the Great Wall or flying over France at night with a view of the Eiffel Tower? Like I said, if you think it’s tough getting a fastpass now…

  93. I remember the magic store from when I was 13! It wasn’t until years later that I returned to Disney, this time w/ my children. I had told my children all about Disney before we arrived, and one of the memories I had shared was the magic shop. I was SOOO disapointed when I couldn’t find it anymore. I’m not sure when they closed it? Now all the merchandise is the same everywhere. I would think they would make more money if each park had different items. The reason being, because if I saw something I knew I couldn’t find anywhere else, I would buy it. The way it is now, I wait to buy ANYTHING until the last day because I know I’ll find the same stuff in Downtown disney. If everything was different I’d be spending money at every park, all week long 🙂

  94. I think Disney should offer some type of VIP treatment to repeat visitors. I’m not taking about people that go once every couple of years, but those folks that make a Disney visit a mainstay; year after year. For someone such as myself, who, in her 20th year of going to WDW (and going on her 25th trip this year in a few weeks), Disney should keep track of those of us who repeately visit and offer some perks such as a free meal at a Disney Signature Restaurant or a free pass to one of the parks. Surely they can come up with some type of reward or incentive for those of us who are so dedicated to the brand and visiting the parks (and spending a ton of money, to boot). :o) I shouldn’t have to necessarily buy an Annual Pass to reap some of the benefits. In the grand scheme of things, I think this will be overall cost effective for Disney, because by receiving these awards or incentives, I believe people would even more so be inclined to come back to WDW. Thanks, Jack – you do a GREAT job!

  95. Ok, so I am not sure what rock I have been under the last four years, but was unaware that they had stopped the Pocahontas show! My daughter was the “drummer” the first time we ever saw the show and still loves Pocahontas b/c of it! So, I would bring that back for sure,(not telling my daughter til we get there next week).
Jack, so looking forward to all of your changes when you become “Ruler of the World”!!

  96. I agree with you Jack. You had some great ideas.

I do not agree with the woman that proposed the ADR surcharge. It is next to impossible to just walk into a restaurant (especially in EPCOT) and get a table. Most only take reservations, so why add a surcharge to those of us efficient enough to plan ahead? If I know I have reservations at an EPCOT restaurant, I go to EPCOT that day. What is hard about that? Don’t punish us for planning ahead and assuring we get to eat where we want and have the Disney experience we want.

I would bring back Horizons and the World of Motion in EPCOT. It was one of my favorite places when I was a kid. The ride was a Choose Your Own Adventure type ride. So much fun!! No idea why they closed, but BRING IT BACK! LOL

Also, the pavilion that had Body Wars, Cranium Command, etc. That place was so much fun and so educational. It was great! My brother and I used to have fun there as kids. Is there even anything there in its place now? They should bring that back as well!

  97. I couldn’t agree with you more about the merch, Jack. Over the years the selection has been greatly reduced & homogenized. Even the “resort log” merchandise is disappearing. I can remember when all of the resorts sold t-shirts, mugs, pins, etc with the logo of the resort on them. I know this isn’t the case with every resort, but it has happened in a lot of them. Maybe folks weren’t buying that stuff?

  98. Great article Jack I too have often said what if while strolling around the world. I would definitly reopen Wonders of Life pavillion this is too great of a building to not use everyday. Perhaps a dinner/theatre and some other attractions could be placed there. I would expand the attraction One man’s life it could be moved to Wonders of life pavillion too. Maybe make it into a ride that chronologically traced Walts life and ideas and had alot of archived stuff. I would also put a second dock in for the Ferry transfer between TTC and Magic Kingdom so when monorail breaks down there would be two Ferries to get the thousands of people to the other side. I would also remove some of the sycamore trees around World Showcase they block alot of views of buildings and fireworks. I would bring back the original show to imagination pavillion. I would add a new ride or two to Animal kingdom something virtual reality like Soarin but based on Animal theme Like the spiderman ride at universal but in a Jungle. I have more but these are good start.

  99. Hi Jack – Great Blog (as usual).

    Here is my list:

I would like to see the return/addition of more live, unamplified music, especially on Main Street. The saxophone quartet, and a Firehouse Five + Two type band would greatly augment the Dapper Dans and the Casey’s Corner pianist (I’m not sure the Disney Band still performs much). And if these bands played their acoustic instruments, the size of the park should help with any cross-talk problems. It would be very cool if the Firehouse Five + Two type band played around the firehouse. These events would help make Main Street much less of a “hurry up and walk through it” part of the park. It would also make Main Street less of a “Disney Mall”.

I echo Jack’s list on the point of more non-Disney merchandise shops. Some small shops reflecting the turn of the 19th-20th century would add back some of the lost ambience. Some of these shops could sell wares that are still used today (even if they are used less than in 1900). Such as:

    – A timepiece shop (Disney and non-Disney watches).
    – A Stationary Shop (Disney and non-Disney paper products). They could also sell greeting cards.
    – A candle shop
    – A photography shop (obviously selling all 21st century digital photo stuff), but it could still be themed like and old fashioned photo parlour.
    – A book store (that could sell Disney books & DVD/Blue Rays)

There would be NO Disney plush toys in any of these establishments! That’s what the emporium is for.

I also agree with the re-introduction of the Canoes, Keel Boats, and the Swan Boats. They add so much to the beauty and tranquility of the park, and really help bring down the frenetic level of having to rush around all the time. TAKE TIME TO SMELL THE ROSES!

I would like to eliminate all busses to the Magic Kingdom entrance. I would like to see all busses go to the TTC. An additional ferry could be used. A LOT of the “magic” of approaching the park is lost when a bus unceremoniously dumps you off in front of the gates. The monorail and the ferry give you a few moments to decompress from the outside world and enter with anticipation the Disney experience. I can remember as a child the view from the Monorail and the Ferry as we approached that castle! Those feeling did not return when I took a Disney bus from Port Orleans Riverside to the MK bus stop.

Along these same lines I would do whatever I could to add more features that make the Magic Kingdom look like a “park”. Grass wherever possible, lots of benches, planting beds, and attractive paving and brickwork. There are lots of exciting things in “the world”, but I also want those who wish to relax to be very comfortable doing so. Disneyland in California does a wonderful job at this (see attractions like the Storybook Land Canal Boats, and the Casey Junior ride)

Well — that’s all I could come up with for now.

    Dan

p.s. They could also get rid of that “Stitch” attraction!

  100. Hi Jack! Again, love reading what you have to say, although I almost screamed at you for the character meals,I do understand your point. We went to Cinderella’s Royal Table for our wedding meal (all dressed up too) and loved the special touches they did for us. But, I do agree that lunch “character-less” option would be a smart one. The mahor domo’s pie is awesome and I think everyone should have the chance to try it on their on terms. I also completely agree with the front cabof the monorail- we have the pilot’s license they used to give you and my daughter thought that was very cool. Also, the fastpass machines- could not agree with you more!!! Thanks again for your views, fun to read what most of us were already thinking!

  101. Jack I agree with everything you said. My biggest thing that I would like to see changed is those shops and areas that are for specialty items. It does seem like you can buy the same thing in every store. I liked it back when you could walk into a small store and find something that you couldnt find anywhere else in the world. Bring that MAGIC back. The little things make the big “world” much more magical. Also, better training on happiness for some CM’s. 90% great 10% bad makes it a horrible experience. Smile, say hello, and treat me like I am your best friend, not a tourist.

  102. Awesome blog! But, then your blogs always are.

I would love to see a return of the Main St transportation vehicles/horses. We visit WDW the last week of Sept, so we rarely get to see them. But, I’ve always remembered them from when I was a child and miss seeing them.

I know that the free dining brings in business during the fairly slow times. But, the free dining has made it so difficult to be able to be spontaneous. It is sometimes a pain to have to plan your day to the minute just so you can get a meal at some of the restaurants.

My last wish isn’t something Disney can fix, only those who visit can fix. I wish for a return to the more carefree days of visiting WDW. The days when people didn’t seem to have an agenda, didn’t try to cut you off, didn’t try to get their kid in front of you or your kids. Sometimes visits WDW aren’t quite as special because others are so self absorbed that whatever they are doing or whereever they are going is way more important than anything or anyone else.

  103. Again, still want to visit your version of the World 🙂 The merchandise one is a big one I think (I’m waiting for the day when you can find items that say “Animal Kingdom” while you’re in the Emporium–it’s almost at that point!!) I think it’s okay to have a lot of the “same” merchandise in the big stores like the Emporium, Mickey’s of Hollywood and Mouse Gear (no idea what would be considered the “big” shopping place at Animal Kingdom…) but the smaller shops should be kept themed!! (especially Main Street–my memories of roaming through the shops as a kid is totally different than the experience you have now–I especially miss the Mickey Mouse cartoons).

Also I think it would be beneficial to have some sort of wheelchair-specific busing. While I understand (and agree with) the courtesy of allowing those with disabilities who have wheelchairs and motorized scooters to go to the front of the bus line I think its extremely inefficient to have to load one or two wheelchairs onto a bus which takes a great deal of time to do AND takes up several seats. To me it makes more sense to have separate buses to make it easier for those in wheelchairs to load without a rush and it doesn’t take up spaces from those without.

I’m in no way against those traveling in wheelchairs/scooters!! I just think it would be less stressful for them and a much more efficient system–especially during the heaviers bus times. (Whether or not this is financially possible is a totally different story).

Also, I miss the old Imagination pavilion (especially the ImageWorks activites that used to be there). I’m sure a lot of the old activities would need to be updated but bring back the old ride with more Figment and Dreamfinder (if they brought back the original Tiki Room they can bring back Imagination!!)

  104. 1. I would have a Pixar themed character meal. There are enough princess meals and not any really gauged toward boys.
    2. I would bring back the concept of the Year of a million dreams. In terms of the free fast passes and things like that. They cost nothing and make great memories for the guest.
    3. The Goofy ice cream bars. They were chocolate ice cream, caramel and covered in chocolate.
    4. I totally agree about the Soarin’ Fastpass.

    Thanks.

    Brian

  105. Bring back the “Tarzan” show at Animal Kingdom. That was great fun!!

Also, as mentioned by others, i would love to see the Wonders of Life pavillion refurbished and opened again.

  106. Hi Jack. I would love to see Disney do something with the now defunct Discovery Island. I think a hotel would be nice, although not convenient to access. Unless the monorail line could be extended there… doesn’t hurt to dream big, right?

  107. Yes, I do remember the magic shop, the penny arcade, and the cinema. The fact that Main Street looked more small-town with the individual shops helped transport guests to another time. Now…it’s a bunch of souvenir shops–all selling the same things. At least Disney has no intention (I hope) of going the way of other theme parks and apparently limiting the food choices to pizza, burgers, hot dogs, and chicken nuggets.

I also agree with the possibility of non-character dining in the Castle, Norway, and the Crystal Palace. I have wanted to enjoy all of them; however, the increased price and the mingling characters (in whom I have no particular interest) are huge turn-offs.

Someone also suggested a surcharge for ADRs. Yes Yes a thousand times Yes. Part of my vacation is to relax and having to make a reservation for a restaurant and then building my itinerary around those reservations does not sit well. I understand that the surcharge is probably included in the cost of staying on property; why not limit ADRs to 1 for every 3 nights. You can only have one fastpass at a time; it seems logical to limit the restaurant “fast-pass” as well.

All in all, thank you for this list and for returning.

  108. When we went to Disneyland a few years ago I so wanted to go on the canoes, but my daughters thought it looked too much like exercise. I regret not forcing them to try it. I think it would be a welcome addition to Frontierland.

I totally agree with you about the shops. I always liked exploring the non-Disney merchandise. I wondered if the sales weren’t good enough to keep the shops open.

    Thanks, Jack

  109. If I ruled the world, I would definitely spend some money to upgrade a few attractions. On my short list would be:
    1. The Tomorrowland Speedway-The fumes are horrible when you are waiting to unload. And, I think a Cars makeover would be great at this ride.
    2. The Backlot Tour at HS needs to be modernized. The Pearl Harbor sequence is dated now, I would replace it with a more current movie or a classic movie.
    3. Country Bear Jamboree–I don’t want the show to change, but the animatronics need an upgrade. You can hear gears turning, especially from the animals on the wall.
    4. I know a lot of people won’t agree with me on this one, but I would bring Marvel into Hollywood Studios in some fashion.
    5. Utilize the empty buildings such as the Odyssey, and Wonders of Life Pavilion at Epcot. The Odyssey could become a lounge to escape the heat, and Wonders of Life should be used for more than just a couple of special events throughout the year. Maybe a Disney museum with rotating displays?

Jack’s Comment: Disney is restricted by contracts and cannot have Marvel rides and attractions. Even though they own the company, Universal has exclusive rights in this area.

  110. I’ll start by saying that I love the Animal Kingdom and it is my second favorite WDW park as is. I do believe it needs a few new attractions, however. With that said, here’s what I’d do:
1)Love your idea to readd the Pochantas show to Camp Minnie Mickey. There’s no point of even going to the area now unless you want to see Lion King.
2)Retheme Dinoland/Dinorama to “Nemo’s Oceanzone.” Firstly, you have the Nemo show there anyway. Then, you can tear down Dinorama and put in Crush’s Coaster from Paris. Dinosaur will come down (you’ll see why later) and be replaced by a lagoon to house the Nemo submarine voyage from Disneyland. Turtle Talk with Crush can go in this area too. I would also add a walkthrough of the Nautalis from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ala Disneyland Paris. Finally, I would retheme the Boneyard playarea and call it “The Beach.” By doing all of this, the Living Seas at Epcot can ditch the Nemo theme which does not belong there IMO.
3)Ditch Rafiki’s PlanetWatch and change it to “Indiana Jones Land.” This might be a stretch but the movies did take place in Asia/Africa from what I remember. You can add Indiana Jones Adventure from Disneyland (replacement for Dinosaur). I would also add walkthrough attraction, and maybe have some sort of scavenger game like Kim Possible at Epcot.

  111. I totally agree with you about reducing the redundancy of Disney Merchandise. When my wife first came in 1994 it seemed like the shops and stores had items unique to them and the area that they were located. Today it seems like all of them have pretty well the same or very similar merchandise.
Many thanks for your blog. It is really good and insightful.

  112. Yep, I agree with everything! But being a shopping fanatic I emphatically agree with your statement about non-Disney merchandise bringing a certain element of interest and diversity to the Disney shopping experience. I bought my very first Madame Alexander doll in Tinkerbell’s Toy shop behind the castle when I was 6, on our first trip to Disney, and it started a life long collection of Alexander dolls and still brings back such rich memories.
Or the estate jewelery shop in New Orleans Square at Disneyland in California, where my father bought my mother a beautiful gold and pearl necklace that she still often wears. Although I have and continue to spend LOTS of money on Disney items, some of the best things I’ve bought at WDW over the years haven’t been branded merchandise.

Also on the topic of shopping, if I ran the World, I would bring back the Villains to “‘Villains in Vogue” shop at the Studios!! All the wonderful variety of villains products has been slowly dwindled down to some pins, but a whole lot of Jack Skellington and Vinylmation junk!!! My apologies to Vinylmation collectors, but its not “Vinylmation in Vogue”! Give me the Evil Queen and Maleficent, foolish mortals!!!
Thanks, for letting me rant, me the mistress of all evil!!
    Claire

  113. I agree with you, Jack, about bringing back the “Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends” show at the Animal Kingdom. This was a great show and had a great message to kids of all ages, their parents, and grandparents. I also wish they would bring back the Nestle Chocolate chip cookie making area at The Land pavilion in EPCOT. Kids always had a blast there it seemed.

    Best regards,
    Brandon

  114. I would add a third bus stop to Downtown Disney at West Side — between La Nouba and DisneyQuest would be ideal. It’s an awfully long walk to the Pleasure Island bus stop for those with limited mobility, or anyone who’s tired after a long day. Also, I’d add a direct bus route from the TTC and Epcot to Downtown Disney. Having to play connect the dots by going somewhere else first to get to a major area like that is way too time consuming.

    Jack’s Comment:

There is a reason there are no direct links between the parks and Downtown Disney. Too many people were parking at DD for free and then taking the bus to avoid the parking fees at the parks. It’s sad when a few bad apples spoil it for everyone.

  115. Hello Jack,

Thank you so much for your blog… it is always a pleasure to read. (and its nice to have you back… even if its just occasionally.) Though there are a number of things that i would love to tweek in order to add a little extra magic to WDW, this is the one i think is quite often overlooked. If i could change anything (within reason), i would rethink & redesign The Seas with Nemo and friends. This ride is an utter let down and offers little to the riders. The ride starts with a fantastic undersea queue and culminates with a slow-moving, content-less cartoon that is set against an overly dark fish tank where nothing can be viewed. This set up has the potential to be incredible and instead we are left with nothing more than a space filler. I would love to see Disney put a little more time and effort into making this ride magical. Thanks for your time.

    Sincerely,
    Dominic

  116. Jack, I actually agree with ALL of your ideas! In addition, as a child, I remember a lot more live music happening in the parks. Bands (such as the fife and drum in Liberty Square; or The Magic Kingdom Band through Main Street and Fantasyland) seemed to wander and entertain guests.

Also, I vaguely remember swan boats in the moat around the castle. Like the canoes and keel boats – I remember enjoying just watching these floating through.

  117. Jack, if I ruled the World, I would immediately task Imagineers to build some sort of slow-down/ramp up process to many of the rides. The magic of whisking me away to a Haunted Mansion is quickly lost when I have to stop and start many times during a ride, only to have a strange voice tell me to stay in the doom-buggy. The same happens with Space Ranger Spin. Pirates and it’s a small world both suffer a similar problem where we’re all playing bumper boats at the end. A quick fix would be to have fewer boats on the water, but then I foresee longer wait times.

(Without consideration for cost, I have envisioned an accessible platform that would offer a stationary pod. The track would have a switch that would then pull another pod off, and send the occupied pod onto the main track without having to stop the magic for those in the throes of shooting Zurg’s evil minions).

    Jack’s Answer:

Space Mountain at Disneyland and Toy Story Mania at both Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios have separate load and unload areas for those needing additional time to board. It’s wonderful that these people’s special needs can be accommodated without impacting everyone else. Maybe we’ll see more of this in the future.

  118. 1.Breakfast in the parks. We early arrivers often have to skip a meal to be there at rope drop. We might like a full breakfast upon arrival (without Goofy looking over our shoulders). Along those lines, bring back Epcot’s Fountain View Espresso and Bakery, at least in the morning hours.
2.Redesign and rebuild Epcot’s Imagination pavilion. Now sponsorless, there isn’t a thing in there that isn’t boring and dated. New sponsor, whole new theme maybe.
    3. (Big ticket item)Another monorail resort, perhaps the Venetian-themed resort that was included in the original plans and never built.
    4. A service charge for advance restaurant reservations. When you dine, it’s credited to your bill.

  119. Jack, I love all of your ideas, and agree that there could be some changes. On my list is Captain cooks at the Polynesian. It is my very favorite resort, but something needs to be done with the ordering system here. It is too small for the current setup. I would also like to see different merchandise in the shops. I enjoy strolling through the shops, but I would like to see some different items each time. My final change would be to close the Atlantic Dance Hall on the boardwalk, it is rarely busy there. I would re-open it as either the Adventurers Club or the Comedy Wharehouse from the old pleasure island. Now there is an idea that would generate some money! Thanks so much for the opportunity and glad to see you back!

  120. Hi Jack!
This may sound silly, but I wish Disney would bring back the orange juice drink in the little plastic orange containers. I think there was a lemon or lime too. Do you remember those? They also came with a straw that you would pop in…
Also, if I ruled Disney, I would put covered areas at the All Star Resorts for those guests waiting for buses.
Thanks for part 2. I loved it!

  121. If I ruled the world I would reopen the Wonders Of Life pavillion in Epcot. This was always a must see attraction for our Disney visits and now it just sits there wasting away. So sad.

  122. Thanks for entertaining us with your great ideas. Here is a simple thing to bring back. The Nestle Chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich.
