8 Unexpected Things I Was Forced to Buy in Disney World

A trip to Disney World is magical, but it can also be full of surprises, especially when it comes to things you end up having to buy on the fly.

Magic Kingdom

No matter how much you prepare, Disney has a way of throwing curveballs at parents and families. I’ve been to Disney World more times than I can count, so I’ve made the plans, the budget, and packed the suitcases. Unfortunately, life still happens in the Disney bubble. Here are eight things I was forced to buy in Disney World (that you might end up buying, too).

1. More Bubbles

If you have kids, you already know that the bubble wands are everywhere. As soon as your little one sees another child with one, there’s no going back. Of course, it doesn’t stop at the wand itself. Eventually, you’ll be buying bubble refills too. While the joy on their face is priceless, I recommend budgeting a little extra for “bubble magic” if you’re traveling with kids, or you can pack your own!

2. Ponchos, But Not For Why You Think

Yes, ponchos are great for keeping you dry during those Florida downpours, but here’s a pro tip: you’ll probably end up using one for your stroller, too. Afternoon rainstorms can soak everything in minutes, and there’s nothing worse than putting your kiddo back into a wet stroller seat. If you don’t pack one ahead of time, be prepared to buy Disney ponchos, and they aren’t cheap. If you can, bring a stroller cover with you, too.

Ponchos everywhere

If you are planning ahead, this is hands down our favorite poncho. It doesn’t feel like it’s clinging to you, and it has a bag you can put it in after use, so your things stay dry! It’s also less than $15!!

And we also suggest buying a stroller cover beforehand. These are made to fit your stroller and will protect them from getting soaking wet while you’re on a ride. Or they will help keep your little one a bit drier as you race from one ride to another during a Florida storm!

3. A New Shirt

Spills happen — whether it’s Dole Whip, coffee, or something from your kiddo’s snack. I wasn’t planning on buying a new Disney shirt that day, but the situation left me with no choice once I had a melted chocolate Mickey bar all over me. On the plus side, I now had an excuse to buy the cute Disney shirt. Consider this the silver lining to a messy situation!

4. For That Random Sweatshirt When It’s 50 degrees

You would think Florida nights would stay warm, but once the sun goes down in the fall, fireworks or late-night rides can feel surprisingly chilly. I had to grab a sweatshirt to stay warm, and now I actually love it! It’s one of my coziest Disney souvenirs, although it’s not often I can wear it in the parks. If you don’t want to splurge on park prices, pack a light layer just in case.

5. The Basics for Babies

Even the best-prepared parents run out of supplies sometimes. Luckily, the Baby Care Centers in each park sell diapers, wipes, and other essentials. While it might be slightly higher prices than at home, the convenience is worth it when you’re in a pinch. Knowing these centers exist can save you when you’re really in need.

6. The Backup I Forgot to Pack

Between food spills, accidents, or even getting soaked on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, sometimes you’ll find yourself buying a new outfit for your child. Disney has tons of adorable clothing options, but they’re definitely priced like souvenirs. Pro tip: throw an extra change of clothes in your park bag to avoid the unexpected expense.

7. Gas

If you’re driving to and around Disney property, don’t forget that you’ll need to refuel at some point. Disney has gas stations right on property, and it’s easy to forget when you’re busy hopping between parks. Seeing that 10 miles until empty on your dashboard can send you into a panic if you aren’t prepared.

8. The Most Expensive Water

Florida tap water has a very distinct taste, and I’ll admit — I just can’t do it. Call me a water snob, but I even lived in Florida, and I cannot drink it. Yes, Disney offers free cups of water, but between the Florida heat and my picky taste buds, I found myself buying bottled water more often than I planned. A money-saving tip: place a grocery delivery order through a service like Amazon Fresh to your hotel. Stock up on bottled water and snacks so you’re not stuck paying Disney prices every time you’re thirsty.
