3 Big Disney World Updates You Missed This Week

Big changes are happening at Disney World every week, and if you don’t stay on top of the news, it’s easy to miss something huge.

Walt Disney animatronic in Disneyland

This week brought updates that cover rides, technology, and even some emotional news from Disney’s Animal Kingdom. We’ve got one of the most popular roller coasters in Magic Kingdom getting a major movie-inspired makeover, a peek at a brand-new patent that could completely change the way we see animatronics in the parks, and a heartfelt farewell to one of Animal Kingdom’s most beloved residents. Let’s break it all down.

TRON Lightcycle / Run Gets a TRON: Ares Overlay

TRON Lightcycle / Run has only been open for a short time, but it’s already become one of the most popular rides in Magic Kingdom. If you’ve been lucky enough to ride it, you know the thrill of launching into the digital grid on a lightcycle. Now, the attraction is leveling up with a brand-new overlay inspired by the upcoming film Tron: Ares, hitting theaters on October 10th, 2025.

The transition to red!

The announcement came straight out of Destination D23 during the Walt Disney Studios showcase, where Yvette Nicole Brown revealed that both Disney World’s TRON Lightcycle / Run and Shanghai Disney Resort’s TRON Lightcycle Power Run would transform to celebrate the movie. The update officially arrived at Disney World on September 15th and hit Shanghai on September 16th.

So what’s changing? The most obvious update is the ride’s color scheme. The familiar blue-and-orange tones of the attraction are being swapped out for a bold red. When you walk up to the grid at night and see it bathed in glowing red light, it’s a completely different vibe.

Look at that!

On top of the visual changes, the soundtrack also got an update. Tron: Ares features music from Nine Inch Nails, and that soundtrack has now become part of the ride experience. Between the new color palette and the music, this overlay feels like a totally fresh way to ride one of Magic Kingdom’s fastest coasters.

If you’re a TRON fan or just someone who loves seeing Disney push its attractions in new directions, you’ll definitely want to ride it during this limited-time update.

Disney Files Patent for Next-Level Animatronics

While new rides and overlays grab attention, behind-the-scenes innovations often tell us where the parks are heading in the future. Case in point: Disney just filed a new patent that could change the way animatronics are built and experienced.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

The patent (US18/592,863) focuses on combining projection systems with sensors and real-time rendering to create more lifelike and responsive animatronics. Instead of relying solely on mechanical movements, this system would project faces or other content onto a moving surface and update in real-time as the animatronic shifts. Basically, the projection engine tracks where the animatronic is and adjusts the animation on the fly, making it look much more natural.

This technology could be paired with the kind of highly advanced animatronics we’ve already seen in the parks—like the new Walt Disney figure at Disneyland or the upcoming Walt Disney animatronic in Magic Kingdom’s Carousel of Progress. That new addition to Carousel of Progress will be the first major change to its intro scene in more than 30 years, and the concept art shows Walt himself welcoming guests to the attraction.

The Walt animatronic

The potential here is huge. Imagine an animatronic that doesn’t just play out pre-programmed movements but actually reacts in subtle ways to the environment. Characters could feel more alive, attractions could become more immersive, and Disney’s storytelling could hit a whole new level. While patents don’t always translate to reality right away, this one signals that Imagineering is looking ahead to a future where animatronics are smarter, smoother, and even more realistic.

Saying Goodbye to Gino the Gorilla

Not all Disney news is about rides or technology. Sometimes, it’s about the living creatures that make Disney’s Animal Kingdom such a special place. This week, Disney shared that Gino the gorilla, the oldest gorilla at Animal Kingdom, has passed away at the age of 44.

If you’ve visited Animal Kingdom over the years, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Gino. He spent 30 years at the park and became a beloved figure not just for guests, but also for Cast Members and animal experts who worked with him daily. He was described as playful, gentle, and steady—a devoted father and troop leader who made a big impact on everyone who encountered him.

Gino was the father of 14 offspring, a remarkable legacy that will live on both at Disney and beyond. His long life is also a testament to the excellent care provided by Disney’s Animal Kingdom, since silverback gorillas typically live between 35 and 40 years in the wild.

Tributes to Gino have poured in, including one from Disney Legend Joe Rohde, who described him as a “true alpha male” and a “gentle, humorous, kind” partner to those who cared for him. Disney also released a video featuring Cast Members remembering his goofy and iconic personality. It’s clear Gino wasn’t just an animal in the park—he was part of the Animal Kingdom family, and he’ll be deeply missed.
