Disney’s Animal Kingdom is more than just a theme park for guests to explore; it’s also a sanctuary to ensure the survival of endangered species and teach us about the animal world.

One of our favorite things about going to Animal Kingdom was seeing the oldest gorilla at the park, Gino. Unfortunately, we hate to share that Gino the gorilla has now passed away.

Gino the gorilla was the oldest gorilla at the park, living to 44 years old. Disney recently shared that Gino has sadly passed away. Gino has spent 30 years of his life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and this gorilla left an impact on guests from all around the world. “Playful spirit, gentle humor, and steady presence as a devoted father and troop leader” is how Dr Mark Penning would describe him.

Gino is the father of 14 offspring, crazy right?! These 14 young gorillas are sure to carry on the legacy of their mighty father. Of course, the memories of the gorilla will be passed on through stories shared by mention by every Cast Member he met, as well as every Disney World guest who got to see him.

A video was posted featuring Cast Members describing the beloved gorilla as goofy, playful, iconic, handsome, and more. Check it out!

If you follow former Disney Imagineer turned official Disney Legend, Joe Rohde, you’ll see he posted a tribute on his Instagram. He called Gino a “true alpha male” and a “powerful, gentle, humorous, kind, patient partner to his minders, a great father, and a great model for the young males in his life.” Most silverback gorillas generally live from 35 to 40 years in the wild. So Gino living to 44 years old is a reflection of the strength Gino carried. Until we meet again, Gino, you will be missed!
