A big change has been made when it comes to some iconic Star Wars memorabilia.

If you’re a huge Star Wars fan, you’re likely familiar with the many unique items that were used throughout the films. Sure, you can make your own lightsaber in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge or even build a droid of your own, but it would be extra special to own an item used in the iconic films themselves. Rare Star Wars props have sold for MILLIONS in the past and some were set to be sold again, but there’s been a CHANGE in plans.
Actor Peter Mayhew, known for his role as Han Solo’s pal Chewbacca in the original trilogy, sadly passed away in 2019.

He left behind an extensive collection of Star Wars memorabilia that would put Dok Ondar’s Den of Antiquities to shame.

According to the BBC, the collection includes call sheets from filming, signed letters and scripts, and rare items that belonged to the late actor. Mayhew had stored the items in his attic, and due to growing health issues, he was unable to retrieve them when he moved out. Mayhew’s widow described this as one of his “biggest regrets.”
Later on, the new owners of the home discovered the treasure trove and brought it to Auctioneer Angus Ashworth. The items were set to go to an auction soon for fans to bid on, but plans have changed.

Mayhew’s widow, Angie Mayhew, found out about the lost collection and publicly stated her disappointment about the sale, saying that it was heartbreaking to see the items put up for sale. She “pleaded” for the sale to be stopped.
When we moved out of this house Peter's movement challenges made it impossible for him to get into the attic to get the rest of these memories. It really breaks my heart to see our belongings auctioned off like this by @angusashworth and @RyedaleAuction1. ~Angie Mayhew https://t.co/9dql4g22Wa

Ashworth shared, “Nobody had approached us to discuss it and had they done so I would of course have talked to the vendors.”

Though Ashworth acknowledged that the items could bring in a “fairly modest” amount in terms of monetary value, he said that given the situation, the “vendors are quite happy to donate it to the foundation to have permanently within their personal collection, not for profit, so that fans can access it in perpetuity.”
He continued, “I can only apologise to all of the Star Wars fans who had already shown great interest in owning a bit of film history.”

While you may not be able to purchase a piece of Star Wars history for yourself, we can all rest easy knowing the collection is heading back to Mayhew’s family and will hopefully be enjoyed by many Star Wars fans around the world.
