The official name for this variant is BA.3.2; however, it was nicknamed Cicada. While it originally surfaced in 2024, it was dormant until late last year — much like a cicada.

So far, evidence shows only a few U.S cases, but a potential trend in Europe and North America. According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Cicada was detected in 25 different states as of February 11th. However, despite this recent report, Dr. Robert H. Hopkins has explained that the strain, “is currently a minority strain, based on the most recent data available from CDC.”

And according to Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, “The early data would indicate that it is not more severe, or it doesn’t have any distinctive clinical presentations,” than other COVID-19 strains. It is also currently unclear if this strain will become more prevalent in the U.S in the future, as there is not yet enough evidence.

Public Health Officials still suggest getting a COVID-19 shot annually, and if you’re experiencing symptoms, to stay away from others and get tested.
