7 Disney+ Shows That Were Canceled Way Too Soon

Streaming shows come and go all the time, but every once in a while, Disney+ pulls the plug on a series that really felt like it was just getting started.

We’ve seen some fantastic storytelling, unique characters, and genuinely fun worlds introduced on Disney+ — only for them to disappear after one season (or just a couple). And if you’re anything like me, those cancellations still sting a little. We’re going over seven Disney+ shows that were canceled way too soon.

Willow

When Disney announced a sequel series to the beloved fantasy film Willow (1988), fans were understandably excited. The Disney+ series of the same name brought us back into that magical world decades later while still honoring the legacy of characters like Willow himself.

The show blended classic fantasy adventure with a modern tone and a diverse cast, offering a breath of fresh air.

Unfortunately, despite strong reviews and a devoted fanbase, the show was canceled in 2023 after just one season due to budget cuts. A second season was written, but, alas, we’ll never see it.

Star Wars: The Acolyte

Maybe the most controversial addition to this list, I will argue that The Acolyte wasn’t perfect, but it brought up intriguing questions that — as a Star Wars fan — I’d love to see come full circle.

Set during the High Republic era of the Star Wars universe, the show explored a darker mystery surrounding the rise of the Sith long before the Skywalker saga.

The series stood out for diving into a time period we hadn’t really explored on screen before, and it led into a pretty sizeable cliffhanger in the Season 1 finale.

The show did well among critics, but the Star Wars fanbase was pretty divided on the show, and the mixed reception in conjunction with a bloated budget led to its cancellation in 2024 after only one season. I personally would’ve LOVED to see how the Sith’s Rule of Two developed, as well as the rise of Darth Plageuis and his apprentice (the eventual Emperor Palpatine) — but only frustration remains.

American Born Chinese

American Born Chinese was one of those shows that quietly became something special and garnered FANTASTIC reviews. Inspired by the graphic novel of the same name, it blended mythology, comedy, and coming-of-age storytelling into a heartfelt fantasy-action sitcom.

The show also reunited several stars from the film Everything Everywhere All at Once and was praised for its ability to tell a story across cultural boundaries.

In 2024, the series was canceled after one season due to low viewership — which is unfortunate, because it had a lot of room to grow.

Renegade Nell

If you love swashbuckling adventures with a little magic mixed in, Renegade Nell was the show for you.

Set in 18th-century England, the show followed Nell Jackson — an outlaw who suddenly discovers she has supernatural powers that help her fight injustice. The show offered an adventurous tone, awesome action, and a likable protagonist. It also did well critically.

However, the show was canceled after one season in 2024, and I can’t help but feel like we’re missing out on what could have been.

The Muppets Mayhem

Let me get one thing straight: THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS “TOO MUCH MUPPETS”! Whenever The Muppets show up, there’s a good chance you’re going to have a fun time — and The Muppets Mayhem was no exception.

Starring Lilly Singh and the legendary Electric Mayhem band, the show detailed their journey to record their first-ever studio album. It was full of celebrity cameos, hilarious music moments, and the kind of chaotic energy you expect from The Muppets.

It was positively received, but was still canceled after one season in 2023. The successful revival of The Muppets Show has me optimistic about the future of The Muppets on Disney+, though.

Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.

Inspired by the classic series Doogie Howser, M.D., Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. was a modern reboot that followed a teenage medical prodigy growing up and practicing medicine in Hawaii.

The show balanced family comedy, medical drama, and coming-of-age moments in a way that felt fresh. After two seasons, though, the series wrapped up its run in 2023.

I’m still wishing we could spend just a little more time with the Kameāloha family.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers

I grew up watching The Mighty Ducks film franchise, the animated series, and going to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim games at the once-named Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim. Anything Mighty Ducks draws my attention — as did the Disney+ sequel series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.

This nostalgic trip back to the rink flipped the original story on its head, as this time, the Ducks were the ultra-competitive, powerhouse team. The show was more about a group of underdogs who had to form their own scrappy squad to challenge them. The show brought back tons of familiar faces like Coach Gordon Bombay and original Ducks — which made longtime fans like me especially excited.

After two seasons, the series was canceled in 2023, but it still managed to capture the heart and underdog spirit of the original trilogy — all while having a somewhat satisfying conclusion. I still think the world could always use more Mighty Ducks, but that’s also my personal bias showing.

If you missed any of these, they’re still worth checking out — just be prepared to wish there was one more season waiting when you reach the finale.
