Taking a cruise is not quite like taking any other kind of vacation. That’s because cruise ships have their own sets of rules that they require passengers to adhere to, including not bringing certain items on board.

For example, most cruise ships ban weapons and weapon replicas, as well as flammable objects and things like scissors. However, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has just added a NEW banned item: smart glasses.
If you visit the prohibited items list on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line website, you will see that smart glasses have been added to the list of banned items. Although you may board the cruise with smart glasses, you cannot wear them on parts of the ship, including (but not limited to) public restrooms, youth program areas, medical areas, and the casino. This applies to smart glasses with the ability to record video and audio.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s banned list recommends that guests who have smart glasses with prescription lenses should bring a backup pair of glasses that are not smart-enabled. So overall, you probably just want to leave the smart glasses at home.

It makes sense that the cruise line doesn’t want people recording other guests on their cruises, so this seems to be a move to protect guests’ privacy. There’s a very good chance that we’ll see smart glasses banned from other cruise lines, as well.
Interestingly enough, Disney has teamed up with Meta for potential use of smart glasses in the parks, but the company has not yet said what it may do to protect the privacy of other guests if they’re widely used in the parks.

We’ll have to see how the travel industry treats this new technology, and we’ll let you know if we spot any other banned items. So check back with AllEars again soon for more.
