5 Things I Wish I’d Known Before Staying at Disney’s Riviera Resort

Disney’s Riviera Resort is a sought-after Deluxe resort, but there are a few things I wish I’d known before my stay that would have made managing expectations and enjoying the resort a whole lot easier.

Disney’s Riviera Resort

I’ve stayed at Disney’s Riviera Resort twice, and there is a lot to love about this resort. The gorgeous views, the minimal Disney nods, and the location are all big perks. However, this resort might take you by surprise on a few things if you don’t have some expectations ahead of time!

1. The Skyliner CAN Go Down

One of Riviera’s biggest selling points is its direct access to the Disney Skyliner, which can whisk you away to EPCOT or Hollywood Studios in minutes. But it’s important to know that the Skyliner does sometimes go down. Whether due to weather, technical issues, or routine maintenance, it can happen. Disney does provide bus transportation when this happens, but the switchover isn’t always immediate and can leave you waiting longer than expected. If the Skyliner is your main reason for booking this resort, just keep in mind that it’s not a guarantee, and factor in a little extra travel time when making park plans.

2. The Lobby is Small

If you’re expecting a grand, sweeping Disney deluxe lobby like the ones at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort or Disney’s Grand Floridian, Riviera might surprise you. The lobby here is small and intimate, which means less space to lounge or people-watch. During peak times like check-in and check-out, it can feel especially crowded, and you may find yourself standing around instead of settling in comfortably. While the compact space fits Riviera’s boutique feel, it doesn’t quite deliver that “wow” factor you might associate with other deluxe resorts.

3. Dining Can Feel Limited

Food is a huge part of any Disney trip, and compared to other deluxe resorts, Riviera doesn’t offer nearly as much variety. You’ll find one table-service restaurant (Topolino’s Terrace), one quick-service spot (Primo Piatto), and one bar/lounge (Bar Riva). While each option is solid in its own right, guests who are used to the multiple dining experiences at places like Disney’s Contemporary Resort or the Grand Floridian may find the choices here underwhelming. If food variety is important to you, plan on making a few dining reservations at other resorts or inside the parks.

4. Make Time for the Pool

Even if you’re the type who usually skips pool time at Disney, Riviera’s pool is worth making room for in your schedule. The main pool area is beautiful, with serene views and a relaxing atmosphere that really fits the resort’s European inspiration. Families will also appreciate the interactive splash area, while adults can take advantage of plentiful lounge seating. It’s one of Riviera’s standout features and a great way to unwind in between busy park days.

5. It Might Feel Smaller than Most Deluxe

Riviera is noticeably more compact than other deluxe resorts, and that can be either a perk or a drawback depending on what you’re looking for. On the plus side, everything is centralized, meaning you won’t be walking long distances to get to your room, dining, or the pool, which is especially convenient with kids or lots of luggage. On the flip side, the smaller scale means fewer amenities and less space overall, which may feel underwhelming if you’re expecting something sprawling and grand. Think of it as a boutique-style deluxe: convenient and easy to navigate, but not as expansive as other options.

  1. The small size of the resort is actually a huge advantage when it comes to transportation. The buses are exclusive to the location, so if you are visiting somewhere by bus they will nearly always have space, even at peak times. And if they don’t you will not have to wait 3-4 buses to find a spot, the way you would for a shared location like the GF/Poly, or for larger resorts.
