Flying Alone? Here’s Why Your Plane Tickets Might Cost More

Solo traveling sounds relaxing. You decide when to get up, where to eat, what to do, and can do anything your heart desires. It also means paying less money since it’s just you — right?

Flying to Disney World this year?

Parties of one might be paying more than a duo when traveling, especially when it comes to flying. Let’s take a look at why that is!

Disney Vacation Planner

According to CNN, solo travelers are charged additional fees for traveling alone. Three of the biggest airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and American Airlines, have been known to charge “a tax on single travelers” on certain routes.

Southwest Airlines

This is only on certain routes, but you might notice it when looking for flights. If you’re planning on booking separate flights for you and your travel buddy, you might want to consider booking together to save some extra money.

United Airlines

CNN found a flight on American Airlines from Charlotte, NC, to Fort Myers, FL, that cost $422 for one person but dropped to $266 per person when two people were flying together. That’s a huge difference!

Airport

This isn’t on every flight, but it is worth checking before flying. If you’re only a party of one, you might not have much of a choice but to pay the additional costs, but if you’re paying for flights separately but flying together, it can potentially save you money.

Orlando International Airport

This “single tax” isn’t only on flights. It can pop up on group tours, cruises, and travel packages. You might see an incredible deal for $100 per person, only to find out that it only applies when you have two people, and the single person has to pay $200.

There are currently no regulations or rules governing these additional fees. Now that you’re aware, be sure to check all your options thoroughly.
