NEWS: An Upcoming Disney+ Series Was Just Suddenly CANCELED

Disney has officially axed a highly-anticipated Disney+ project as part of a larger shift in the company’s streaming approach.

Tiana, an animated series based on 2009’s The Princess  & The Frog was first announced in 2020, shortly after the streaming service’s premiere. The series was set to be a musical that followed the adventures of Tiana after the film, with Anika Noni Rose having been set to reprise the titular role. However, as of early March 2025, the project has been confirmed as CANCELED.

Not only has the series been canceled, but according to sources it seems that what has been produced will never see the light of day. Apparently, unlike the axed Moana series that was reworked into the billion-dollar-earning Moana 2, the Tiana series was too episodic in nature to be stitched together into a film, despite several attempts from various creative teams.

According to the same sources, The Princess & The Frog story is planned to continue in a separate short form special with Joyce Sherri and Steve Anderson attached to direct, with the former serving as writer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney’s move to officially “pull the plug” on Tiana is part of a larger strategy shift that involves moving away from “original longform content for streaming.” According to the outlet, this also includes the cancellation of a previously unannounced feature-length project.

This is a massive shift from Disney’s pandemic of just a few years ago, when then-CEO Bob Chapek led the charge for the company’s various wings to focus on original content for Disney+ in order to grow subscribers.

Furthermore, according to THR, the studio’s focus will instead be on “releasing one theatrical film per year in addition to other shorts and special projects.” Currently, Zootopia 2 is slated for release on November 26th, 2025, with an unannounced feature scheduled for November 2026, and the third installment of the Frozen franchise is set for November 2027.

Disney’s cancellation of the previously announced Tiana Disney+ series is a sign of a larger shift in the company’s approach to animated content. Stay tuned to AllEars for more on these changes.
