My Editor Made Me Wear a Wet Scarf Around My Neck in Disney World, and I Would Do It Again

Usually, when I’m at Disney World, I prefer not to be wet — this time, I made an exception, and I’d do it again in an instant.

As an AllEars reporter, I spend a LOT of time in Disney World in all kinds of weather. While most of the time we’re doing our best to stay dry and even testing all sorts of products to help you stay that way, this time I was asked to change up my thinking and I don’t think I’ve ever felt better since.

When you spend as much time in Disney World as I do, it’s hard not to avoid some of the factors that might be out of your control. Sure, there’s products you can use to keep your warm on a cooler night, as rain-resistant as possible, and even help your feet feel their best after a full open to close experiencing all Disney World has to offer. But, there’s only so much you seem to be able to do when that warm Florida sun is shining it brightest and you’re struggling to keep cool.

Sunny skies in Magic Kingdom!

Anyone who’s visited Disney World in the Summer and early Fall knows that Orlando heat and humidity can be downright brutal — we’re talking like hot enough temperatures to practically cook on the ground (ok, that’s probably a slight exaggeration but not by much). Well, honestly, when you’re not used to the temperatures being so high where you’re from and then spend a few days down here, you can truly feel like you’re loosing an uphill battle against the sun. So when my handheld fans failed me, hats just aren’t cutting it anymore, and I could only spend so much time ducking into shops as I hop from park to park, I needed another solution fast. Luckily, my (incredibly smart) editor, had a plan!

The genius of this plan was so simple but hit me like a tidal wave when it was all said and done. She suggested I try a cooling towel on my next trip around the park, and at first she was met with a resounding “hard pass” from me. I couldn’t imagine myself taking one more thing to the park with me in my bag and having to deal with a wet scarf hanging from my neck all day, but I was willing to try it out.

OOH, THOSE LOOK INTERESTING!

The cooling towels we settled on were a perfect fit for what I was looking for (and they scored a few extra bonus points as a set with this AE mom)! Each of these come with their own carrying pouch that keeps it separate from the rest of your belongings in your bag — and since it has its own pouch, they’ve also got a clip that’s super easy to use keeping my chargers and cords good and dry.

Cooling towels!

As for the cooling towel, it’s not super thick like you might expect. Sure, it’s not going to be the most comfortable thing if you’re not used to wearing something around your next, so I needed to start off in small doses. Once I wet the cooling towel, I rang it out, snapped it as directed to increase its chances of reaching maximum cooling and hung it around the back of my neck. When I tell you  it was the most cooling sensation I’ve felt in the heat at Disney World I’m not lying in the least bit.

Cooling towels!

The sensation was instant, and as I was able to get used to the towel, I was able to tolerate it for longer wears at a time. When it started to become warmer from use, I re-wet it, wrung and snapped, and it was cool again. As the end of the day wound down for me, it was time to put it up on my journey out of Disney World. I was worried I would have a difficult time stuffing the wet towel back into the pouch but it was surprisingly easy to do with little resistance. Best of all, this one is made of a microfiber cloth which made throwing it in the wash with the rest of my family’s laundry a breeze!

  1. We’ve been using them for a few years. It feels great but it quickly gets warm so you need to keep turning it round to get a cool bit again. I use mine at my dance classes in the summer months as we don’t generally have AC in the UK. The first time I wore it there, people laughed as they’d never seen them here before. Now, however, I’m not the only one that has one…

  2. Nope. Just nope. I used one Sept 2024 when it was hot enough to make me feel ill. Having a cooling towel around my neck was like wearing a scarf. It made me hotter despite being wet and cool. I’ll just never visit in the warm months again.
