We’ve seen quite a few different travel trends come and go lately.

From “revenge travel” to “sleep vacations” and more, you really never know what the next big shift in trends will be. We’ve been keeping an eye on the latest fads and it sounds like experts agree that “goods getaways” will be the next viral travel trend.
According to a report by Axios, travelers are embracing a new travel trend that Expedia is calling “goods getaways.” Don’t worry, we can explain.

Essentially, a goods getaway is when someone travels in search of a viral item they can’t find back at home — like that viral Dubai chocolate bar, for example.
“When going on vacation, 39% of travelers visit grocery stores or supermarkets and 44% shop for local goods they can’t get at home.”

We can easily see this trend taking off — especially since it’s something folks (including us!) have been doing at the Disney parks for years. Let’s be honest, how many times have you planned a trip JUST to buy that piece of merch you saw on AllEars that you can’t get online, or JUST to try that new snack we reviewed?

Expedia says that it’s all part of a new “souven-era” where travelers are planning their trips specifically to purchase certain goods that they can’t get in their hometown or country. It’s something we’re quite familiar with, since we travel for specific souvenirs and snacks all the time!
We wouldn’t be surprised if people start planning even more goods getaways — not only to Disney World, but to the new Epic Universe theme park coming to Universal Orlando.

There’s a pretty big chance that when this park opens, a large amount of the merchandise for sale will only be available in the actual park and not online — meaning if you want to take home one of those souvenirs, you’ll have to plan a trip to Epic Universe yourself or find a friend to buy something for you!
While we haven’t seen goods getaways go viral yet, we agree with the experts that it might take off (pun intended) soon.

This was always a thing in the UK, especially back in the 80s and 90s. People used to pop over from England to Calais, France to stock up on duty free booze and cigarettes. Sometimes they would stay overnight but usually it was just a day trip.
