The airline industry is incredibly important to today’s travel.

Airline companies work hard to keep flights scheduled and on time so travelers can have good experiences. Part of that process is ensuring pilots remain employed and working hard with each airline. But now, one budget airline may see a pilot strike is negotiations don’t go as planned.
According to Reuters, 97.4% of Allegiant Air pilots have voted to authorize a strike if the company and the Teamsters union fail to reach a fair agreement during mediation sessions currently being conducted. The mediation sessions are being conducted by the federal National Mediation Board.

The airline stated, “Allegiant remains committed to negotiating in good faith.” They shared that they have offered an increase of 50% for pilot wages, with an average increase of 70%. They added, “Additionally, we have offered a significant increase in retirement benefits, long-term disability, and extensive scheduling and quality of life improvements.”

According to the union, “Allegiant pilots are some of the most overworked and underpaid in the airline industry.” The union is seeking “industry-standard compensation and improvements to scheduling.”
Teamster union represents 683 workers, including line and heavy maintenance technicians, as well as store employees and some administrative maintenance staff.

Allegiant Air is a low-cost airline based out of Nevada. While the vote means a strike could happen, it has not yet currently occurred. We’ll keep an eye out for any updates.
