Well…we tried, OK? We TRIED to take on a $48 slice of cake aptly titled The Kitchen Sink. But we have to be honest. We failed. We tried…but we failed. You’ll see why in a second.

Recently, we were challenged to visit the Hard Rock Hotel‘s restaurant at Universal Orlando, The Kitchen. Our order was simple: just one item. But this isn’t any old meal. It was a beast.
Tucked away in Universal Orlando’s Hard Rock Hotel is a restaurant called The Kitchen. Here, they serve The Kitchen Sink, which is SEVEN LAYERS of sweets. It’s $48, too. You’ve got brownie, peanut butter creme, chocolate chunk cookie, red velvet, vanilla cheesecake, devil’s food chocolate cake, vanilla chiffon, chocolate sauce, and vanilla bean ice cream. If it sounds like too much, it is.

Well, here goes. This is The Kitchen Sink. It can barely support itself. It’s humongous. Keep in mind we were a party of one during this visit…so no. We did not even come CLOSE to finishing this. We love dessert — don’t get us wrong — but this was too much for one person.

For some reason, the chefs thought it would be a good idea to serve a BUNCH of vanilla bean ice cream in addition to the mega-cake. Personally, we didn’t think the ice cream was necessary. You could probably get five or six servings out of JUST the ice cream.

The decorations were cute. The strawberry was fine. The dollop of whipped cream on the side was thick and rich. But that’s not what you care about when you order something like this. You care about the LAYERS.

As you would expect, this was a sugar overload. It tasted like it came straight from the freezer, which was good because it quickly started to melt and shift. In terms of the flavor, it was actually incredible. Each layer was moist and decadent. But DO NOT try to tackle this alone; bring five or six friends, and plan to take home leftovers.

Some parts had a rich chocolate brownie taste. Other sections had more of a cheesecake flavor. We even got a few bites of that chocolate chip chunk layer. Be warned, though — you can’t really cut the layers apart. It’s so dense and thick that you have to hack away rather than divide and conquer. Overall, this is a fun novelty dessert, but you have to go in prepared to share. Trust us.

Weird that Universal decided to call this massive piece of cake “The Kitchen Sink” when Disney already has a massive sundae also called “The Kitchen Sink”.
We tried to tackle Disney’s version with three people and failed to finish it (and it wasn’t for lack of trying as I ate myself sick to the point we had to pull over on the side of the road while going back to our resort!). So if this dessert is anything along that size, then yeah, you better bring help!
