Disney Writer Reveals Moment That May Have Lead to His Show’s CANCELATION

The Disney Channel has been around for YEARS, but if you ask any Gen Z or Millennial, they’ll probably tell you Disney’s best shows were made in the early-mid 2000s.

According to some members of our team, Wizards of Waverly Place was the best show, while others loved The Suite Life of Zach and Cody. But many also loved Lizzie McGuire! If you were a big fan of the show, you were probably super disappointed to learn that the reboot of the show was canceled. But now we know WHY the show likely never made it to audiences!

According to Deadline, Jonathan Hurwitz, a writer on the canceled reboot, has shared some storylines that may have made Disney…uncomfortable.

The storyline in question didn’t happen in episodes one or two — in fact, those episodes had already been written and filmed (!!!), but episode three was where things ended. In episode one, Lizzie is living as an interior designer in New York when she finds out her chef boyfriend is cheating on her, so she moves back home, where animated Lizzie is waiting for her.

In the second episode, Lizzie finds out Gordo, her childhood best friend, is happily engaged and expecting a child. However, at the end of the episode, she gets a message from her childhood crush, Ethan Craft. And here’s where the issues come in — the beginning of episode three had Lizzie waking up “in Ethan’s bed, in his water polo t-shirt. Animated Lizzie pops up, and she has this little checklist, like a to-do list, and Ethan is on the list, and she checks it off.”

Hurwitz continued to say that he remembers animated Lizzie saying something like, “I checked that box –dramatic pause– twice.” When he saw the comment that Disney had some issues with a few storylines, he assumed that was one of them. Ultimately, Disney’s hesitations seemed to stop the show in its tracks.

So, will we ever get a reboot of the show? It’s hard to say — Disney could choose to take another shot at the reboot in the future, or they could just let it lie. Clearly, Hilary Duff is down to return as Lizzie, so who knows what could happen!
