Is Bob Iger Any Closer to Succeeding in His “Number One Priority” at Disney?

Disney+ has been going on quite a journey over the past few months.

Shows on the streaming service get canceled pretty often, and back in February, it was reported during the Q1 earnings call that Disney lost a TON of subscribers. So what is that looking like now? We’ve got an update.

To be more specific, Disney admitted that the streaming service dropped 2.4 million subscribers at the Q1 earnings call. During the Q2 earnings call, we were really looking forward to hearing how many subscribers Disney+ has now, especially as CEO Bob Iger has previously called streaming his #1 priority.

As of April 1st, 2023, Disney+ currently has 157.8 million subscribers, down from 161.8 million subscribers in December 2022. This is just a small change, though, by just 2  percent. However, much of that loss was at Disney+ Hotstar. Domestically, the Disney+ subscriber count went from 46.6 million in December 2022 to 46.3 million in April 2023, only a loss of 1 percent.

However, revenue per Disney+ subscriber is up from the previous quarter, especially in the domestic market. In the U.S. and Canada, subscribers spent an average of $7.14 per month as of April 1st, 2023 as compared to $5.95 per month in December 2022. This was due to an increase in monthly pricing.

International revenue per subscriber also went up, except for Hotstar. The Disney+ Hotstar average monthly revenue per paid subscriber decreased from $0.74 to $0.59 due to lower per-subscriber advertising revenue.

Disney also announced that the ad-free tier of Disney+ would get a price increase soon. No official details have been announced about this price increase just yet.

In other Disney+ news, we know when Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is landing on the service, and we’ll continue to keep an eye out for all the latest news, so stay tuned to AllEars!

Bob Iger only has two ways to take the company — which makes the most sense? We break it down!
