Another CRITICAL Update on the Proposed Changes to Disney’s Reedy Creek District

Changes could soon be on the way for Disney’s Reedy Creek Improvement District.

The self-governing region has held power over the district for years, but a bill introduced by Florida legislators was signed into law that would dissolve the district come June 1st, 2023. A new bill has since been filed — and we have another critical update on it.

A new bill was filed in Florida that seeks to change Disney’s Reedy Creek Improvement District. As a recap, the bill would:

  • Rename the District
  • Replace the District’s current Board with one that is entirely appointed by the Florida Governor and confirmed by the senate
  • Remove certain powers from the District
  • Require certain reports be filed by the District
  • Subject the District to certain other requirements
  • Still allow the District to do key things like issue bonds

We recently shared that the bill had passed in the Florida House and would soon be moved to the Senate floor for a vote. It was expected that the bill would pass the Senate with no issue.

That seems to be the case, as the bill has now officially passed in the Florida Senate with 26 to 9 votes. This isn’t the end of the road for this legislation though, as it still needs to make its way to Governor DeSantis’ desk — where it will likely be signed into law effective immediately.

Disney previously issued a comment about the Reedy Creek situation, noting that they were monitoring the bill. We’ll continue to keep a close eye on this situation and let you know of any updates. Stay tuned for more.
