James Cameron really knows how to create mega-hit films.
The director’s latest film, Avatar: The Way of Water, has just surpassed a box office benchmark solidifying him as one of the most successful directors of our era!
As of this week, The Way of Water has generated a total of $1.928 billion globally according to Variety. It has pushed past Spider-Man: No Way Home to become the sixth-highest grossing film released in all of history! Avatar, the original film that came out in 2009, takes spot number one with a total of $2.9 billion. Another film by James Cameron, the 1990s classic Titanic, comes in at number three, having grossed $2.2 billion during its initial release.
For Cameron to have three films in the top five, the Avatar sequel will need to gross a total of at least $2.05 billion to surpass Avengers: Infinity War. Even if it fails to bump the Marvel film, if Avatar: The Way of Water manages to surpass the $2 billion mark (which appears likely!) it will be the first pandemic-era movie to join the $2 billion club.
This is good news for Avatar fans! With the success of the most recent film, Cameron has released more information about the future of the Avatar franchise. Stay tuned to our site for the latest on these and other Disney movies!
