NEWS: Disney Reveals How Many People Buy Genie+ In the Theme Parks

When Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane were released less than a year ago as a paid replacement to the previous FastPass+ system, the offerings got a mixed reception.

But how many people actually buy and use the service? During the Fiscal Year 2022 Quarter 3 Earnings Call for the Walt Disney Company we’ve gotten tons of updates about how the company is faring financially from the parks to Disney+ and everything in between. And now, we also have an update on the number of guests who use Genie+ in the Disney parks.

For $15 per person per day, you can purchase Genie+ to use in Disney World. The service costs $20 per person per day in Disneyland. The offering has gone through several changes since it was introduced including changes to what rides are offered with the service as well as, in Disney World at least, how you purchase the service.

Individual Lightning Lanes are similar offerings, but you have to pay for them separately with prices varying based on the ride, time of year, and other factors. Individual Lightning Lanes are usually offered for some of the most popular rides in the parks like Rise of the Resistance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

So how many Disney guests actually use the service? In the Quarter 3 Earnings Call, Bob Chapek said that close to 50% of park guests purchase Genie+.

Genie+

“Even our Genie product, which we released short of a year ago, now about 50% of the people who come through the gate, buy up to that Genie product,” Chapek said. This is up from just several months ago when Disney reported during the Quarter 1 Earnings Call that about one-third of guests were purchasing Genie+, with over 50% of guests using it during the holiday season. Note that Chapek did not specify which park he was referring to — he only said “through the gate,” without mentioning which gate that was. This may be just Disney World, or it could be Disney World and Disneyland combined.

And that’s not the only major news we got during the Earnings Call. Disney also announced that the ad-supported version of Disney+ that was announced several months ago will be coming on December 8th and will be $7.99 per month. This is causing the ad-free plan (which is currently $7.99 per month) to increase to $10.99 per month on December 8th.

During the call, Disney also commented on the guest demand for the parks saying that the demand sometimes exceeds the available supply of Park Pass Reservations. Bob Chapek also made some statements on the Park Pass Reservation system that could indicate it’s here to stay. 1. Selling it to half of the parks guests is why it’s so hard to use to ride the rides, lol. When half the people are competing for the few spaces available via the system someone is inevitably going to lose out and be disappointed.

  2. Genie+ is one of the biggest ripoffs in Disney. After purchasing passes to enter, now pay to ride the popular rides! However, personal experience is that after four days of paying for Genie+, we (11 of us) were able to ride three popular rides total. And yes, we tried at 7:00 a.m. every day. Just add the $15 to the daily pass cost and we won’t get so angry when we can’t get on a favorite ride.

  3. Wouldn’t it just be faster and simpler to take whatever money we have or are going to get, and send it to Disney care of Chapek?
