A New Olivia Rodrigo Documentary, Rescue Ranger Trailer, and More Disney+ News You Missed!

2021 and 2022 are going to be GREAT years for movies, series, and streaming content…we can just feel it!

Disney especially has had some really big hits recently, with series like WandaVision and The Book of Boba Fett, plus lots of huge movie releases from Raya and the Last Dragon to Spider-Man: No Way Home. There’s a lot going on these days, so it can be hard to keep up with all that media news! And if you’re trying to catch up from this week, don’t worry — we’ve got you covered with the latest.

Coming to Disney+

Let’s kick things off with all the new and upcoming content on Disney+! For starters, The Wonderful Winter of Mickey Mouse premieres on the streaming platform on Friday, February 18th. This special will follow the same style as the other Mickey Mouse shorts.

Also arriving this week is the highly-anticipated The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder! It’s a continuation of the hit Disney show from the early 2000s. You can catch the premiere on Disney+ on Wednesday, February 23rd.

What else is coming on Wednesday? Well, Free Guy will be available to stream as well!

And coming to Disney+ on March 25th is a brand-new movie starring singer Olivia Rodrigo! According to Variety, the film will tell the story behind her album “Sour” and discuss how it feels to be a teenage pop star. You’ll also be able to watch special performances of her songs and several guest stars will make appearances.

For those who fell in love with last year’s new Marvel show, Loki, you’ll be happy to know that the series is renewed for a second season. According to Deadline,  Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have come on to co-direct many of the episodes, with Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as the lead character.

New Trailers

This week brought multiple trailers for new content from Disney, as well as other studios. If you’re pumped about the new Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers movie, then you’ve got to check out the new trailer that dropped a few days ago. This movie will star John Mulaney and Andy Samberg.

Also, Marvel fans were probably thrilled to finally get the trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The movie comes to theaters this May and follows after the events of the incredibly popular Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Big News for Popular Shows

This week we also found out that several popular Marvel TV shows will be leaving Netflix soon, so make sure to get your series binges in before they go! Netflix’s license for the Marvel Defenders series, including shows such as DaredevilJessica JonesIron FistLuke CageThe Punisher, and The Defenders, is ending and these shows will leave the platform on March 1st.

And if you’ve been watching the How I Met Your Mother reboot on Hulu, How I Met Your Father, then get ready because the story is about to get a little longer! The show was renewed for season 2 this week.

What about Star Wars fans? Well, this week another star was added to the cast of the new Ahsoka series planned for Disney+. According to The Hollywood Reporter,  Ray Stevenson has joined the show, which is set to begin production in April. This isn’t Stevenson’s first rodeo with Lucasfilm either — he played Gar Saxon in Star Wars Rebels and The Clone Wars.

Box Office News

It was a big week in box office news as well, with Disney’s latest film, Death on the Nile (based on the mystery novel by Agatha Christie) taking the lead with a  $12.8 million opening. According to Deadline, Universal’s Jennifer Lopez-Owen Wilson romantic comedy Marry Me came in third for the weekend.

But those box office numbers don’t even compare to what Spider-Man: No Way Home has accomplished. The Marvel film from Sony has officially overtaken James Cameron’s Avatar as the third-highest-grossing domestic release EVER. This week, the movie hit a milestone of $760.9 million in the North American box office. WOW!

Special Entertainment Events

And finally, let’s talk about some exciting entertainment opportunities coming up soon! First up, KXAN reports that on Saturday, March 12th, South by Southwest will host a Disney+ streaming event in Austin, TX. There will be three outdoor screening events at the Long Center where families can win giveaways, see characters, and watch some hit Disney+ movies at the same time.

And for the awards event of the year, The Hollywood Reporter announced who would be hosting this year’s Oscars. This year, the event will have three hosts: Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes. Make sure to tune in on March 27th!
