Want to know how Spider-Man defeated Jake Sully of Avatar?

Spider-Man: No Way Home is Marvel’s most recent release, and it has been hugely popular in theaters. This film has already shattered some major opening weekend records, and now it can add another BIG accolade to its résumé.
According to Variety, Spider-Man: No Way Home has officially overtaken James Cameron’s Avatar as the third-highest-grossing domestic release EVER.

Avatar has held this place for more than a decade (it was released in 2009), but now the bronze goes to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Avatar made $760.5 million in the North American box office, and Spider-Man: No Way Home has now reached $760.9 million. Variety says that number is “three times as much as the next highest-grossing movie of the pandemic era,” which is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Spider-Man: No Way Home was released only in theaters, although it will be coming to a streaming service this year.

Spots 1 and 2 for highest-grossing domestic releases go to Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936 million) and Avengers: Endgame ($858 million). So it’s unlikely that Spider-Man will overtake these numbers, but we’ll have to wait and see!

Spider-Man: No Way Home did have a higher average ticket price than Avatar had when it was released, but the pandemic-era release still makes this an impressive achievement.

On a global scale, Spider-Man: Now Way Home is in the 6th spot for highest-grossing movies. It has earned $1.8 billion worldwide. The top 5 spots go to Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Titanic, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Avengers: Infinity War. Each of these has earned more than $2 billion, and Avatar earned more than $2.8 billion globally.
