The Orlando Sentinel reports that a merger between the two airlines is currently in the works, and is set to close later this year pending approval from the airlines’ stockholders.

Local news outlet WESH 2 News reported that Frontier Airlines’ parent company is buying Spirit Airlines in a “$2.9 billion cash-and-stock deal”; the deal is valued at about $6.6 billion in total.

In Florida, Spirit and Frontier Airlines are currently ranked as the 2nd/3rd busiest airlines at Orlando International Airport, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

As part of the deal, WESH 2 News stated that “Spirit shareholders will receive 1.9126 shares of Frontier plus $2.13 in cash for each existing Spirit share they own.” Additional details, like new branding, CEO, and headquarters location are yet to be announced.

This merger intends to “provide more low-cost fares for more travelers to destinations in the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean,” according to the Orlando Sentinel, and the two airlines are claiming they will provide “$1 billion in annual consumer savings.”
