After Disney+ experienced a boom in subscribers during the global pandemic, there has been a slight slow down in subscriber growth in recent months.

While Disney+ continues to release plans for new content, Bob Iger, former Walt Disney Company CEO who will soon retire as Chairman of the Board, has some comments about the future of Disney+ and how they can reach their goals of substantial subscriber growth.

Back in August during the third quarterly earnings call, Disney+ had grown to 116 million subscribers, which marked a 100% increase from the same time the previous year.  Later, during the fourth quarterly earnings call, Disney reported that Disney+ had grown to 118.1 million subscribers, which was an approximate 1% increase from third quarter.

As reported by CNBC, Bob Iger said that Disney+ needs “more content for more people.” During the fourth quarterly earnings call, current Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek stated that the company’s long-term goal for Disney+ is to reach between 230 and 260 million subscribers by the end of 2024.

During an interview with CNBC’s David Faber, Iger said that while he cannot update or comment on much, he believes that Disney+ “needs more volume,” as well as “more programming or more content for more people,” like when it comes to “different demographics.” He noted that the Walt Disney Company has expressed confidence that they will be able to achieve their Disney+ goals and that Bob Chapek is addressing this content gap.

Disney+ has released lots of new titles since launching in 2019, including popular series like The MandalorianLokiWandaVision, and more, but according to CNBC it has not released as much new content as Netflix. Still, Disney+ recently announced quite a few new titles coming soon, so we will have to wait and see what else might be added.
