Star Wars Day may have passed, but there are still a lot of ways to get a taste of the movies both inside and outside of Disney!
Of course, you could spend the day in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge joining the Resistance and trying some out-of-this-world eats in both Disney World and Disneyland. Or, you can add a touch of the galaxy far, far away to your wardrobe at home with Star Wars tees. But, have you ever wondered what it would be like to stand next to an X-Wing Starfighter? Well, you might be able to soon!
According to the Orlando Sentinel, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. now has a full-sized X-wing Starfighter that was used in the filming of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. And, while you can’t see it just yet, the starfighter will be part of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum next year!
Star Wars fans will definitely want to get a close-up look at this one when it debuts! The X-wing Starfighter has a 37-foot wingspan and you’ll learn exactly what it would feel like to be part of the ground crew in the movies! The Smithsonian curator, Margaret Weitekamp, even shared that you can spot all the details that filmmakers added to the aircraft to make it look like it was beaten up from all the battles it had been in.
Star Wars props haven’t made an appearance at the Smithsonian since 1997 when they hosted a Star Wars exhibit that included costumes and props from the movies so this will be an exciting new addition.
Now, Smithsonian staff are working to reassemble the X-wing so that it will be ready to display next year alongside historical planes like the one used by the Write Brothers for their first powered flight. They haven’t released a date that the display will begin in 2022 just yet, but we will keep an eye out for updates! And, in the meantime, stay tuned for the latest Disney news!
