Disney World’s President Joins Florida Governor’s Task Force to Reopen the State

As states begin to turn their attention towards the slow reopening phase of the current health crisis, task forces are forming to bring together various experts and leaders across industries and local governments. We learned last week that The Walt Disney Company’s Executive Chairman Bob Iger has joined the business recovery task forces for the state of California.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis met today with various state leaders to address how businesses in the state may strategize the reopening process, when it is time to do so. This meeting revealed the various members of Florida’s business recovery committee, including representation from The Walt Disney Company.

Josh D’Amaro, the President of Walt Disney World, has joined what is known as the “Re-Open Florida Task Force Executive Committee.” D’Amaro is joined by John Sprouls, the CEO of  Universal Orlando Resort and executive vice president of Universal Parks & Resorts.

  1. Re-opening the Parks and then getting people back from out of state are 2 very different things. Without controls to stop the spread, Florida could be inviting a disaster. Average COVID gestation period is 5 days and the average WDW visit is 7-10 days. What will they do with people who show up healthy, but are symptomatic before they are ready to leave? Will the average family be able to handle the cost of a 14 day quarantine on top of what they paid for the vacation? It seems possible that airlines will be doing temperature screening at a minimum, what happens when half your party cannot get back on a plane?

  2. I did not see anyone who represented more vulnerable communities other than possibly the state representatives. It seems that someone who runs a food bank, homeless shelter, or inner city community center would be better able to speak for those who will have a hard time in this recovery. I would hope that the one thing we learn from Corona is that we are all in this together. I also hope that Disney’s representative considers both the shareholders AND the employees in mind.

    1. Ideally I agree but realistically I don’t think they should be opening anytime soon. There’s still way too many people getting the virus and dying from it, especially in Florida (and California).
