My Favorite Walt Disney World Restaurants at the Resorts and Downtown Disney

This week we get to list our favorite restaurants in the Walt Disney World resorts and in Downtown Disney.

However, before we get to that task I do want to comment on last weeks blog. Pop Century seemed to be the most popular “value” resort while “Port Orleans was the most popular “moderate” resort. I didn’t see a clear cut winner in the “deluxe” resort category. The Polynesian and Wilderness Lodge were very popular, but so were the Grand Floridian, Yacht and Beach Club and Animal Kingdom Lodge. As far as “DVC” resorts both the Bay Lake Tower and Kidani Village at Animal Kingdom Villas were on a lot of peoples wish list. Of those that responded, many had stayed at quite a few different resorts. And almost everyone had very positive memories of their stays.

Anyway, on to my list. One of the things that us retired folks do well is go out to eat. And we do it frequently. 🙂 So, my wife and I have eaten in just about every restaurant in all of Walt Disney World. As far as this blog goes, I thought about creating a separate category for the Boardwalk restaurants; similar to Downtown Disney. However, I decided to let those restaurants fall into either the Deluxe or DVC groupings.

Sanaa

Value Resorts

1) Everything Pop (Pop Century)
2) End Zone (All Star Sports)
3) World Premiere (All Star Music)

Moderate Resorts

1) Trail’s End (Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground)
2) Maya Grill (Coronado Springs)
3) Boatwright’s (Port Orleans – Riverside)

Deluxe Resorts

1) California Grill (Contemporary)
2) Ohana (Polynesian)
3) Citricos (Grand Floridian)

DVC Resorts

1) Flying Fish (Boardwalk Villas)
2) Olivia’s Cafe (Old Key West)
3) Sanaa (Kidani Village at Animal Kingdom Villas)

Downtown Disney

1) Bongos Cuban Cafe
2) House of Blues
3) Earl of Sandwich

Special Honorable Mention to: ESPN Club (Boardwalk). I love their “Cuban burger”.

OK, now that I have told you my top three, what’s yours? I’d love to know. Also, you can add whatever comments you want to help us appreciate your choices.

Speaking of comments, here’s some of my thoughts. This was very difficult for me because there are so many fantastic restaurants in all the different resorts. However, the top of my list was easy. I love the food and atmosphere of the California Grill. What an incredible place to spend and evening! The Flying Fish, Ohana and Citricos are fantastic in their own right. I do have a couple of buffets on my list in Trail’s End and Boma. The fried chicken at Trail’s End is to die for and the selection at Boma’s is fantastic. I didn’t quite know where to put the ESPN Club on my list. However, it’s in it’s own category because I love going there for just one item; the Cuban burger. If you’ve never tried it you’re missing out on something special.

And you could win an AllEars baseball cap. I will take all the names of those who post a comment (see below) with your list, within the next couple weeks and I will put them in a hat and randomly draw the name of the lucky winner. The only rules are that you must reside in the US, be 18 years old or older and you must provide your email address so I can contact you should you win.

All comments must be posted no later than Sunday, July 25, 2010 in order to be eligible to win the baseball cap. The winner of the AllEars baseball cap will be announced shortly thereafter.

  2. Hi Mike,

Love you info and your “datamining” approach to the blogs. Here are my picks:

Value Resorts – haven’t ever eaten here

    Moderate Resorts

1 Sassagoula Floatworks @ Port Orleans
2 Pepper Market @ Coronado Springs
    3

    Deluxe Resorts

1 California Grill @ Contemporary (love the sushi & the view)
2 Cape May Cafe @ Beach Club
    3 Artist’s Point

DVC Resorts (have never eaten here)

    Downtown Disney

    1)Bongos
    2)Wolfgang Puck express
    3)Rainforest Cafe

  3. Like you, I hesitate to name one restaurant over another.
However, there is one that I can make without any hesitation. It, technically,
is not in a Disney resort but it’s on the property. I am speaking of Shula’s
    Steak house.

Unquestionably, they served the best steak dinner I have ever had. Including
(the stockyards in Chicago, Kansas City and Omaha)… The Yachtsman Steakhouse,
California Grill, Artist Point, and any other you care to name. At the very
    least, give it honorable mention.

Living in Mile High Denver (Colorado) we only make it to WDW every other year.
Our first night’s dinner is always at Shula’s Steak House.

Just a couple of 70 year old kids celebrating life!

  4. Value Resorts

    1 All Star Sports
    2 All Star Music
    3 All Star Movies
The food court at Pop Century is just too busy for my tastes. That place really needs an additional food court.

    Moderate Resorts

    1 Trails’s End
    2 Sassagoula Float Works
    3 Old Port Royale

    Deluxe Resorts

    1 Boma
    2 Kona Cafe
    3 Beach Club

    DVC Resorts

    1 Cape May
    2 Turf Club
    3 Olivia’s

    Downtown Disney

    1) Earl of Sandwich
    2) Wolfgang Puck express
    3) Raglan Road

  5. Value Resorts

    1 Everything Pop (Pop Century)
2 World Premiere (All Star Music)
    3
After over 15 visits since 1992 these are the only two Value Resort food courts
we have eaten at. We stayed at Pop Century in 2006 and ate mostly breakfast
    here.

    Moderate Resorts

    1 Pepper Market (Coronado Springs)
2 Riverside Mill Food Court (Port Orleans)
    3 Grab n Go (Carribean)
We have stayed at each of these moderates with the exception of Coronado
Springs. But we discovered the food court at Coronado Springs while my
brother-in-law stayed there on the same trip. The food choices seemed above
moderate level food as did the quality!

    Deluxe Resorts

    1 Cape May (Beach Club)
    2 Kona Cafe (Polynesian)
    3 Whispering Canyon (Wilderness)
We have been enjoying the Cape May Character breakfast since our first visit in
1992 and now it like a tradition and we still love it.

Kind of the same thing with the Kona Cafe we have to go once each visit and get
    the Tongas!

Whispering Canyon is probably the last one that fits into or tradition of doing,
the food is good, great ambience, and the food is good.

    DVC Resorts

    1 Flying Fish (Boardwalk)
    2
    3
The only one we have eaten at a DVC Resort, and we have eaten there multiple
times to find each meal different and excellent.
    Downtown Disney

    1) Red Hot and Blue
    2) Planet Hollywood
    3) Rainforest Cafe

    Your comments:
We always eat the first day we arrive at Red Hot and Blue. Everything I have had
to eat is great from the shrimp po-boy to pulled pork.

Planet Hollywood usually gets a visit when we are shopping at Downtown Disney,
and the burgers are usually what we get.

  6. Deluxe:
    1) Jiko
    2) Citricos
    3) California Grill

Comments: I like restaurants for both the food and the atmosphere. I visited Sanaa in April and was somewhat disappointed, so Jiko remains at the top of my list. I just discovered Citricos and thought it was fabulous. I had a hard time choosing number three. I finally picked California Grill because the food and wine are up to par with the other two, but especially because I love the idea of getting up from your meal (they suspend serving so your food doesn’t get cold) to go outside and watch the MK fireworks. But, as others have mentioned, it is the second noisiest restaurant I’ve been to at WDW (Whispering Canyon being first).

To Jill: I also tried Artist’s Point this April. I have the impression it really is the same menu as always, because I had been reading up on it. The food was good, but I was still disappointed after everything I’d read. The space is pleasant, but the service was a little slow.

    Your comments:
Thanks so much for this post. I really enjoyed reading everyone’s favorites. I have not eaten at as many resort restaurants as I would like. My husband and I were originally going to do a non-park trip staying at SSR last August for our 10th anniversary. We were going to have the dining plan (since DVC members don’t need park tickets to get it) and visit all the resort restaurants that we’ve been interested in but never got to. Unfortunately, that trip fell through due to the economy.

I do have to say that my favorite restaurant on my list is Boatwright’s. DH and I ate there for our honeymoon in 1999 (we were staying at POFQ) and loved it. We returned with our children this past May (needed a last minute ADR and it was available), and it was even better than we remembered. I got the prime rib, and it was superb. This restaurant is among the less expensive table service restaurants, and it’s an excellent value. I think we will be planning more visits here in the future.

Your comments: We typically eat most meals in park, so I couldn’t really provide my favorites in most of the categories above. However, we recently (last trip in Dec. 09) tried Yachtsman Steakhouse on the Dining Plan, and it was wonderful. We’ve eaten at Artist Point a few times (as last 5-6 trips we have stayed at Wilderness Lodge). It’s always good but such a long experience–they really need to get a few more servers and cooks! California Grill is always great because I always get the pork. But we’ve done it so much and, quite frankly, after spending that much money, I would prefer to do so in an adult atmosphere (which I really wish it was), although you can’t beat the fireworks view from there. I was supposed to try Victoria & Albert for my birthday but got food poisoning over at Jikos 2 days before, so never have had the chance yet.

    Your comments:
I haven’t stayed at any other Value but the POP and their food is pretty good. I have only stayed at the Port Orleans and only did the food courts for breakfast. We usually eat at the parks, especially EPCOT but my absolute favorite place is BOMA. I hope to some day eat at the California Grill and all the restaurants at the Grand Floridian. The Wave at the Contemporary has great food, but the noise level is sometimes high. I have eaten breakfast at the Garden Grove Café at the Swan and that was very nice.
I am going back to WDW in 2 weeks so perhaps I will be able to get some more restaurants under my belt (ha ha)
Even though it is not in this category, I can’t wait to try the new Via Napoli in Italy if it isn’t too insanely crowded.

  11. Value Resorts

    Your comments:
Values – have personally only tried one so nothing to comment.

Moderates – Our home resort is PO – Riverside so we love the Mill (best create your own pasta ever!) and Boatwrights for breakfast (sad it is no longer open at that time). I’ve only been to Pepper Market once but the concept is neat and it reminds me of the Marchelino chain in Canada. We need to try Trail’s End.

Deluxe – We love breakfast at Kona Café (macadamia pancakes!), Chef Mickey’s is one our list for every trip – tradition on the last day and we love the character breakfast at ‘Ohana’s. We also enjoy 1900 Park Fare for breakfast or dinner. We need to try some of the other restaurants like Artist Point, Narcoossee’s, California Grill, Yachtsman Steakhouse…yum!

DVC – I had a hard time picking these so I chose some that were technically in the Deluxe part of the resort but meant to be shared by the DVC guests. Cape May breakfast is another must for us. Whispering Canyon is a hoot as long as you don’t book it on your first day (too tired for all the noise…learned from experience) and Boma is really lovely.

Downtown Disney – Wolfgang Puck Express is truly a hidden gem especially on the dining plan. I love the chowder at Raglan Road…I get it every time (never tried anything else there). Earl of Sandwich is another really great deal.

These are really fun, Mike, you should do a post on top 5 appetizers, entrees and desserts (any location in Disney…make people really agonize over their choices).

    Your comments:
I LOVEEEEEEEE Trail’s End!!! We went for lunch and it was yummy and hot and fresh and so wonderful! I’m also including Hoop-De-Doo because I loved the food and the show. The fried chicken and the “mashed taters” were some of the best I’ve ever had!

Garden Grove tops my list of character meals as well as Deluxe Resorts. We went on a BBQ night and the food was quite good. They had a make your own baked potato bar (toaster included to make the potato piping and to melt cheese). But what really made the experience was the character interaction. Goofy and Pluto alternated, and we had a blast with both of them. It was just my friend and I at our table, both 20-somethings, but the characters spent as much time with us as anyone else if not more. The resturaunt was half empty, so there was plently of time for them to play. Goofy even sat down at our table, called over the waitress, and tried to order a drink.

Whispering Canyon is also great! A loud atmosphere, but so much fun. My friend and I were drinking soda, and the waitress decided he was drinking it too fast, so she brought him “a little more.” It was a small cup, even smaller than a kids cup. This place was a hoot, but don’t go if you’re not ready to have some fun!

Cooks gets a special mention because the experience there was amazing. My friend and I actually ate dinner sitting in armchairs near a fireplace. The food was not my speed, but they were great and actually gave me a double portion of a kids meal, which was really yummy 🙂 My friend loved his meal!

T-Rex was great! I highly reccomend it over Rainforest. The food is better, and so is the atmosphere!

  15. Value Resorts

1 I’ve been to allstar music and sports and they both seemed exactly the same to me…so no contest, they’re all probably the same.

    Moderate Resorts

1 The Riverside Mill at Port Orleans Riverside back in the day… (see comments)
2 Port Orleans French Quarter Floatworks…BEIGNETS!
3…I ate at the Caribbean Beach food court so I guess I’ll put it as 3rd though I don’t recall thinking it was anything special

    Deluxe Resorts

    1. The little food court downstairs at Wilderness Lodge
2.And I haven’t been to any of the others!

    Downtown Disney

    1) EARL OF SANDWICH
    2) EARL OF SANDWICH
    3) EARL OF SANDWICH

Your comments: So we’ll work our way backwards – Earl of Sandwich is genius…I wish they had them in every park so I could eat it breakfast lunch and dinner every day at WDW…can not understate the awesomeness, especially the Caribbean Jerk Chicken – BRILLIANT. And let me say, I’ve been to many restaurants at DTD so I’m not just putting Earls three times because it’s the only place I’ve been to..it’s just that good!

    Deluxe Resorts:
Only deluxe I’ve been to was Wilderness Lodge…too poor for Artist Point, was EXTREMELY annoyed at that loud restaurant off the lobby (left before we got our drinks), but the little food court downstairs was nice – kind of cavelike but had some decent food and felt very “disney” to me.

    Moderates:
The Riverside food court USED TO BE AWESOME. Their fried chicken was REAL fried chicken, the mexican food was good, the italian food was well-made italian food (this was 5-10 years ago), today it’s the same thing as everywhere else. They have burgers, chicken strips, those bland pizzas…bluh. That fried chicken used to be incredible though, as a person from a region of the united states where we know our fried chicken, I will say, it was GOOD. The bakery was also very nice, they even gave my father the praline recipe years ago.
The food court at french quarter has beignets which makes it awesome, other than that, it’s just like the rest.

As for the value resorts…just change the ugly murals on the wall and it’s the same thing…

So in conclusion: EARL OF SANDWICH – AWESOME
OLD port orleans riverside (we might even say *hushed tone* dixie landings *end hushed tone*) ALSO AWESOME

    Your comments:
No trip to Disney World is complete without a dinner at Citricos at GF. It is our favorite dining spot. We always go a little early to relax with a drink at Mizner’s Lounge while listening to the jazz band – lovely! I’m not sure which category Jiko should be in, but that’s another high point for us that rarely disappoints. We do love the CA Grill and the superb food and service however, it’s always so incredibly noisy. Yes, I know it’s Disney World but that is ridiculous. And Raglan Road is fun and friendly whether you go for a full meal or just for a drink and to enjoy the entertainment.

One note is that we used to love Artist Point (it was in our top 5 restaurants) but had a few bad experiences there and mediocre food. They’ve had the same menu forever! If anyone has more recent, positive experience there please let me know if we should give Artist Point another shot.

Most of my answers are based on having young kids. But we LOVE Ohana for delux meals. Jiko was really good but that was enjoyed when our first born was 8 months old and sound asleep! So these days we mostly stick with the kid friendlier places like Chef Mickey and 1900 Park Fare. We were really impressed with the food at T Rex the last time we went. Its on our must go back to list for our april trip. : )

There are so many good restuarants it is hard to choose but between the DVC and the deluxe ones rank my favorites. I left Boma off because it was a buffet but definitely my favorite buffet!

  26. I have another suggestion for your “top lists”. Why not list the top shows or attractions from each park that you feel are in most need of being updated or refreshed? This should create a lot of debate!

Your comments: For the most part, I believe that if you want to eat well, eat at the hotels or Downtown Disney. With the exception of World Showcase at Epcot, the restaurants at the parks are mediocre, especially compared to what you pay.

Comments: I haven’t visited even close to as many as you have. I truly love all of the restaurants at AKL. We have stayed there before, but we also make a point of going there when we are staying elsewhere. Also my husband always votes for ‘Ohana every trip.
This is totally off subject because you already did your blog on top fireworks. On the 4th of July we went to a regular hometown fireworks display which we anticipated all day. Last year on the 4th we were at WDW (as well as since then and at Disneyland since then as we are Disney-addicted). This year as we pulled into where we were watching the display my almost-3-year-old said, “THIS ISN’T DISNEY WORLD” in a very disgusted voice. I guess from now on his standard for fireworks will always be WDW!

  30. We haven’t eaten at as many restaurants as you have, so I can’t fill in all the categories!! But, I wanted to mention our favorite Disney restaurant is Boma!
